A hundred articles in this series reduce to one correction, and it is worth stating plainly before any money changes hands: you are not scenting a floor area, you are scenting a set of rooms. Almost every guide online tells you to divide your carpet area by a coverage figure. That sum comes from commercial scenting, where the air is ducted and the floors are open, and it falls apart in an Indian flat the moment a bedroom door is shut. What follows is the framework that replaces it — four questions, asked in a fixed order, with the arithmetic attached.

How do I plan and buy home fragrance for my home?
1. Count air spaces, not square feet. Walk the home with every door in the position you normally keep it. Whatever is still joined together is one space and takes one machine. Every bedroom whose door shuts is a separate problem. Corridors, kitchens and rooms used twice a year come off the list. See the full counting method.

2. Size the machine to the room, not to the budget. Above about 150 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 — 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours a fill on low, remote and timers, three 15ml scents included. 3. Place before you dose. A metre off the floor, a foot of clear space around it, away from the doorway rather than beside it, and out of the direct path of a ceiling fan or a split AC. The rule the whole guide rests on

Fragrance moves through a room by diffusion and by whatever air currents happen to exist, and both of those stop dead at a shut door. Not slow down — stop. This single fact invalidates the area-divided-by-coverage sum that most buying advice is built on, because that sum treats a home as one continuous body of air, and a home with internal doors never is. It is why somebody can own four diffusers in a 1,300 sq ft flat and still have a bedroom that smells of nothing: they bought for area, and the area was never the unit. It is also why the commonest real-world mistake — one machine in the corridor, positioned to "do the whole flat" — does almost nothing. A passage borrows its smell from the rooms either side, so the fragrance simply drains into whichever one has its door open.

The correct unit is the air space, and the count is smaller than the door count. An open living-dining-kitchen is one space however large it is, and shares one machine — provided it is genuinely open, with no half-wall or L-turn hiding a corner from the machine. Every bedroom that gets shut is its own separate problem and needs its own machine or nothing at all; there is no in-between. Kitchens lose to whatever is on the hob and are best sequenced rather than masked. Bathrooms and entrances are usually better served by a reed diffuser from ₹749, which runs continuously with no socket and nothing to switch on. What survives that filter in a typical 2BHK is two rooms, and in a 3BHK three — which is why the honest answer to "how many diffusers" is nearly always fewer than the number people arrive with. Coverage figures assume a closed room without a cross-draught: a fan, an open window or an AC on high all cut them sharply, and the answer to that is better placement, not another machine.

The free upgrade, and the one people skip
About a metre off the floor — a shelf, a console, a chest of drawers — because mist disperses outward and settles downward, so a floor-level machine spends its output on skirting boards. A foot of clear space, since mist that hits a wall or curtain condenses instead of dispersing. Away from the doorway rather than beside it: a machine at a bedroom door scents the door and leaves the room behind it thin. Out of the path of a fan or split AC, which push mist into one corner. The SOSA principle
There is no machine at any price that reaches through a door. Which is why the answer to every version of this question is a count, not a capacity.
Coverage ratings describe one room with the door shut and no draught. Nothing on any spec sheet describes a home.

Placement, dose and schedule

Placement first, because it changes the result more than any upgrade and costs nothing. Stand each machine about a metre off the floor with a foot of clear space around it, away from the doorway rather than beside it, and out of the direct line of a fan or an air conditioner. In an open living-dining zone, put it where the room is widest rather than where the socket is. If a room smells strong beside the machine and of nothing six feet away, that is a placement problem, and adding drops will make it worse. Then dose, and dose down. Three to six drops per tank is the guidance and three to four is where most households should sit. More drops do not extend coverage; they raise intensity near the machine and increase what you spend. A Boond's 300ml tank also makes the same drop count a stronger mixture than a Sukoon's 500ml — use three where you would use four. And you are the worst judge of your own home: your nose stops registering a constant smell in about twenty minutes, so ask somebody who has just walked in. What that dose costs by the month.

If you read only one paragraph of this guide, read this one. Buy fewer machines than you were about to, and move the ones you have. In eleven years of composing fragrance and rather too many years of answering this question, I have never improved a home by adding a fifth diffuser — and I have improved a great many by shifting a machine three feet.

The reason the area sum persists is that it comes from a real place — commercial scenting, where you are working with open retail floors and ducted air, and where dividing volume by machine capacity genuinely works. Homes have doors. The moment a door exists you are not scenting a volume, you are scenting a set of separate rooms, and the sum stops meaning anything at all. Every mistake in this category traces back to that one transplant — from the corridor machine that does nothing to the six-unit 3BHK where four tanks go unfilled after March.

So: count the rooms somebody actually stands in. Give each one the machine it needs, not the machine that matches the others.
