Solar gain through a glass frontage creates a convection current that builds through the afternoon and peaks when a showroom is busiest. It also heats the displays and the stock behind the glass, which is its own problem.
Quick answers — read this first
How does afternoon sun affect fragrance in a glass-fronted showroom? It drives convection. Air heated behind the glass rises and circulates, changing the direction and strength of air movement through the day, so a level set in the morning behaves differently when the sun is on the facade.

Does it affect the stock as well? Yes, and that matters more than the airflow in some categories. Sun on a display heats the products directly, which increases their own release - relevant for anything with its own scent, such as leather, wood, textiles or packaged goods.

What are the practical fixes? Solar film or external shading, blinds used on a schedule rather than on somebody's judgement, keeping the machine out of the heated zone behind the glass, and moving scent-sensitive stock out of direct sun. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed away from the facade holds a steadier level.
The short answer
Short answer: Solar gain drives convection that peaks when you are busiest and heats the stock directly. Shade the glass, and keep the machine away from it.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so it adds no humidity through the monsoon - on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, with reeds from ₹749 for small still rooms.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor area, ceiling height, AC and fan usage, glazing and how often the main doors open - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How do large glass frontages and afternoon sun affect fragrance inside a showroom?
In two ways, and the second is the one people miss. First, the airflow. Sunlight through a large frontage heats the air behind the glass, which rises and sets up a convection current that circulates through the showroom. That current builds through the afternoon, peaks on a west-facing elevation in the late afternoon, and largely disappears after sunset - so the same machine at the same setting produces a different distribution at eleven in the morning and at five in the evening. In a Vijayawada or Guntur showroom this is a daily cycle, strongest from March to June. Second, the stock. Direct sun on a display heats the products themselves, and anything with its own scent releases more when warm: leather, wood, textiles, packaged goods, cosmetics. A display in the sun is therefore contributing its own smell to the room, strongest at exactly the hour the convection is distributing everything most vigorously - which is why some showrooms are described as smelling quite different in the late afternoon without anybody changing anything. The fixes are ordinary building measures. Solar film or external shading on the worst elevation; blinds operated on a schedule rather than on whoever remembers; keeping the machine out of the heated zone behind the glass so its output is not immediately swept upward; and moving scent-sensitive or heat-sensitive stock out of direct sun, which is good merchandising practice anyway. Then accept some daily variation rather than chasing it with the dial. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: the sun moves your air and heats your stock - shade the glass, move the stock, keep the machine away from the facade.
Placement is the cheap half of the fix: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 kept out of the heated zone behind the glass holds a steadier level all afternoon. Fragrance from ₹299, and solar film does the rest.

A moving thermal load, and heated stock

A glass frontage is a daily thermal event rather than a fixed condition, and a showroom's air behaves accordingly.

Why this works
Managing a sunlit frontage
1 Solar film or external shading on the worst elevation, usually west-facing 2 Blinds operated on a schedule, not on whoever happens to remember 3 Machine kept out of the heated zone behind the glass 4 Scent-sensitive and heat-sensitive stock moved out of direct sun
The machine that suits an Andhra year: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so no added humidity in a wet month, with timers and a locked intensity for a seasonal schedule. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
The daily cycle
Convection that peaks when you are busy
Air heated behind glass rises, draws cooler air in at low level and circulates - a loop that strengthens as the sun moves onto the facade and fades after it leaves. On a west-facing Andhra showroom that peak coincides with the busiest part of the retail afternoon, which means the day's most variable airflow condition arrives with the day's most customers. Expecting a constant distribution through that is unrealistic; placing the machine out of the loop's strongest region is not.
Tip: The strongest airflow of the day arrives with the most customers.
02
The forgotten half
Your stock gets warm and releases more
Anything with its own scent gives off more of it when warm, and a display in direct afternoon sun gets warm. Leather, wood, textiles, cosmetics and packaged goods all contribute more to the room's smell at four in the afternoon than at ten in the morning, entirely independently of any fragrance machine. In a furniture or leather showroom this can be a larger effect than the ambient scenting itself, and moving the affected display is both a merchandising and an ambience improvement.
03
What to do
Shade it, then stop chasing it
Solar film and external shading reduce the thermal load directly and pay for themselves in cooling; scheduled blinds prevent the fix depending on memory; and keeping the machine and sensitive stock away from the glazed zone handles the rest. After that, accept the residual daily variation and leave the setting alone. Chasing an afternoon dip with the dial produces an evening that is too strong, and it is one more path into the ratchet that quietly relevels a building over a season.
Tip: Chasing the afternoon dip gives you an evening that is too strong.
The SOSA principle
A glass frontage is not a fixed condition. It is a thermal event that happens to your showroom every afternoon.
And it heats your stock as well as your air.

Practical fixes for a showroom you already have

A dry, cool register handles a hot sunlit showroom better than a warm one, which tends to read as heavier still when the room itself is warm.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes on climate: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuous air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and a loaded filter changes how a room smells regardless of any fragrance setting, so AC servicing is checked before machine intensity is raised. Dust entering a road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter. Ultrasonic diffusers add humidity by design, which is a disadvantage in monsoon months; waterless machines do not. Perceived intensity varies with temperature contrast at the entrance, so levels are judged from the doorway rather than from inside. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

Everything I know about fragrance behaving differently in India I learned from complaints that turned out not to be about fragrance. In April, an air conditioner in Vijayawada runs almost continuously, pushing the same air through the same filter all day. By the second month of summer that filter has changed the room more than any setting on a machine has, and the owner concludes the fragrance has faded.

The second thing is arrival. Somebody stepping out of 40 degree air into a cold room takes the most sensitive breath they will take all day, and your staff - eight hours in - cannot perceive it at anything like that intensity. Judge the level from the doorway, having been outside. It is free, it takes two minutes, and it is the only honest test there is.

And the monsoon point that matters commercially: a waterless machine adds no humidity, while an ultrasonic diffuser adds a little by design. In a wet Andhra month that is the difference between a fresh room and a damp one. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions

How does afternoon sun affect fragrance in a glass-fronted showroom?
It drives convection. Air heated behind the glass rises and circulates, changing the direction and strength of airflow through the day and peaking on a west-facing elevation in the late afternoon.
Does the sun affect the stock too?
Yes. Direct sun heats displays, and anything with its own scent - leather, wood, textiles, cosmetics, packaged goods - releases more when warm.
What are the practical fixes?
Solar film or external shading, blinds operated on a schedule rather than from memory, keeping the machine out of the heated zone, and moving sensitive stock out of direct sun.
Should I adjust the setting through the afternoon?
No. Chasing an afternoon dip produces an evening that is too strong, and it is a route into the gradual upward drift that relevels a building over a season.
Where should the machine sit?
Away from the glazed zone and out of the strongest part of the convection loop. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 placed there holds a steadier level. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the sizing and zoning method applies whatever equipment a business finally buys.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuously running air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and this changes how a space smells independently of any fragrance setting; servicing is therefore checked before machine intensity is increased. Dust ingress in road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter and is not addressed by fragrance. Ultrasonic diffusers introduce humidity by design and waterless cold-air machines do not, which is relevant in monsoon conditions. Perceived fragrance intensity varies with the temperature contrast a person experiences on entering, so levels are assessed from the entrance rather than from within the space.
