Always, and it is worth turning into an actual rule rather than a good intention - because the alternative is a business that quietly relevels itself upward every summer and never notices.
Quick answers — read this first
Should AC filters be checked before increasing scent intensity? Always, and as a written rule. A loaded filter changes how an entire circuit smells, and because it builds gradually it is perceived as the fragrance fading rather than as a maintenance issue - which leads directly to an unnecessary and permanent intensity increase.
What should the protocol contain? Filter, drip tray and drain line checked; the doorway test performed by somebody who has been outside; confirmation that nothing else changed; and only then a scheduled, reversible adjustment - recorded, with a date.
Why does this matter more in Andhra? Because air conditioning runs nearly continuously from March to June, so filters load in a fraction of the usual time and the gradual change is easy to misread. A locked SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 makes the protocol enforceable.
The short answer
Short answer: Always, as a written rule: filter, tray and drain first, then the doorway test, then a recorded and reversible adjustment.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so it adds no humidity through the monsoon - on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, with reeds from ₹749 for small still rooms.

Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Should HVAC filters and AC servicing be checked before increasing commercial scent intensity?
Always, and the useful version of this answer is a protocol rather than an opinion. Here is the mechanism it protects against. A filter loads gradually over weeks, and the flat, slightly stale character it adds builds so slowly that nobody perceives it as a change - they perceive it as the fragrance having faded. The dial gets raised. The filter is eventually changed, or the season ends, and the room returns to normal - but now at a higher setting that nobody reverses because nobody connected the two events. Repeat over three summers and a business is running at a level it never chose, which is the single most common failure mode in commercial scenting. The protocol, on one page: before any intensity increase, check the filter, the drip tray and the drain line; perform the doorway test - five minutes outside, then in through the front door; confirm nothing else changed, such as a display moved in front of the machine or a service door now propped open; and only then adjust, as a scheduled and reversible seasonal change, recorded with a date and a reason.Name an owner and put the filter check on the same rota as the fire extinguishers, not on somebody's memory. This matters more here than in most climates, because from March to June an Andhra air conditioner barely stops and filters load in a fraction of the usual time. A locked SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 makes the protocol enforceable rather than aspirational, on fragrance from ₹299. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: filter, tray, drain, doorway test, then a recorded reversible adjustment - and a lock so the rule has teeth.
A protocol needs something to enforce it: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 with a key-lock means an intensity change is a deliberate act by a named person rather than something that happens on a hot Tuesday. Fragrance from ₹299.

Make it a rule, not a good intention
Turning this into a written rule is the difference between a business that holds a level for years and one that relevels itself every summer.
Why this works
Maintenance before adjustment
The machine that suits an Andhra year: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so no added humidity in a wet month, with timers and a locked intensity for a seasonal schedule. Fragrance from ₹299.
Intensity increases are made in response to a felt problem and reversals require somebody to notice an absence of a problem, which nobody does. That asymmetry makes scent settings a ratchet: they climb. Over several seasons a business arrives at a level that would have been rejected if proposed on day one, having never made a single unreasonable decision. The protocol exists to break the ratchet by making every increase conditional, dated and reversible.
Tip: Settings climb because nobody notices a problem that stopped.
02
Why the filter is first
Gradual changes are misattributed
A sudden change gets diagnosed; a gradual one gets misattributed. A filter loading over six weeks never announces itself, so the effect is assigned to the most recently changed variable, which is usually the fragrance. Putting the filter check first in the protocol catches the commonest cause before the most expensive response is taken, and it costs a few minutes. In an Andhra summer it should be checked monthly on a busy or road-facing site.
03
The other variables
Somebody moved something
Before concluding anything, check that the machine is still where it was, that no display or partition has gone up in front of it, that no service door is now propped open, and that the air-conditioning settings have not changed. A surprising share of perceived fragrance changes are somebody having rearranged the room - and it is an easier fix than any of the alternatives. Include it in the protocol so it is checked rather than assumed.
Tip: Check whether somebody simply moved something.
The SOSA principle
Scent settings behave like a ratchet: they go up when there is a problem and never come down when it stops.
A written protocol is what breaks the ratchet.

The protocol, in one page
None of this is about the fragrance itself, which is rather the point - the protocol protects a good choice from being gradually undone.

The SOSA commercial range
Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes on climate: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuous air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and a loaded filter changes how a room smells regardless of any fragrance setting, so AC servicing is checked before machine intensity is raised. Dust entering a road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter. Ultrasonic diffusers add humidity by design, which is a disadvantage in monsoon months; waterless machines do not. Perceived intensity varies with temperature contrast at the entrance, so levels are judged from the doorway rather than from inside. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. A note from Sonal
Everything I know about fragrance behaving differently in India I learned from complaints that turned out not to be about fragrance. In April, an air conditioner in Vijayawada runs almost continuously, pushing the same air through the same filter all day. By the second month of summer that filter has changed the room more than any setting on a machine has, and the owner concludes the fragrance has faded.
The second thing is arrival. Somebody stepping out of 40 degree air into a cold room takes the most sensitive breath they will take all day, and your staff - eight hours in - cannot perceive it at anything like that intensity. Judge the level from the doorway, having been outside. It is free, it takes two minutes, and it is the only honest test there is.
And the monsoon point that matters commercially: a waterless machine adds no humidity, while an ultrasonic diffuser adds a little by design. In a wet Andhra month that is the difference between a fresh room and a damp one. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions
Should filters be checked before increasing scent intensity?
Always, and as a written rule. A loaded filter changes how a whole circuit smells and is perceived as the fragrance fading, which leads to an unnecessary and permanent increase.
What should the protocol contain?
Filter, drip tray and drain line checked; the doorway test performed; confirmation that nothing else changed; and only then a recorded, dated, reversible adjustment.
Why do settings only ever go up?
Because increases respond to a felt problem while reversals require somebody to notice a problem has stopped, which nobody does. Settings behave like a ratchet.
How often should filters be checked in Andhra?
Monthly on a busy or road-facing site through the summer, rather than the seasonal default, because near-continuous running loads them in a fraction of the usual time.
What else should be checked?
Whether the machine has been moved, a display or partition added in front of it, a service door propped open, or the air-conditioning settings changed. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuously running air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and this changes how a space smells independently of any fragrance setting; servicing is therefore checked before machine intensity is increased. Dust ingress in road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter and is not addressed by fragrance. Ultrasonic diffusers introduce humidity by design and waterless cold-air machines do not, which is relevant in monsoon conditions. Perceived fragrance intensity varies with the temperature contrast a person experiences on entering, so levels are assessed from the entrance rather than from within the space.
