Why identical: a team compares without meaning to. Mixed scents at mixed prices produce a visible ladder — the gap between our cheapest and dearest 50ml is ₹849 − ₹749 = ₹100, which is nothing to you and is a rank order to eight people looking at eight boxes.
What a reed diffuser is, if nobody on the team has met one: a refillable glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds. The oil climbs the fibre and evaporates into the room. No flame, no socket, no switch, and 6–8 weeks from a 50ml.
The quieter reason it suits a team: eight colleagues means eight sets of dietary rules, eight kinds of household and eight sets of things you have never asked about. A sealed non-food object asks none of those questions.
2. Uniformity here is fairness, not laziness. Eight people in a working relationship have a standing interest in being treated the same. Anything that varies — scent, size, price, even packaging that happens to differ — becomes information about how you rank them, whether you intended it or not.
3. Do not buy something bigger for the senior person out of a team order. If you want to give someone more, give it separately, at a different time, out of sight of the group. Inside a team gift, a visible tier is the one mistake that is remembered, and it is remembered by the seven, not the one.
4. The arithmetic, laid out. 8 × ₹749 = ₹5,992. 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392. 8 × ₹849 = ₹6,792. At 130ml, 8 × ₹1,249 = ₹9,992. Below the reed range, 8 × ₹379 = ₹3,032 for jar candles and 8 × ₹474 = ₹3,792 for ceramic mugs. A duo at 8 × ₹1,498 = ₹11,984 is more than a team gift usually needs to be.
5. A non-food gift removes eight questions you never asked. Eight colleagues carry eight sets of dietary rules, eight kinds of household and eight sets of circumstances you have no business enquiring into. A sealed bottle of fragrance oil raises none of them, and it does not need to be eaten within a week.
6. Buy one variant, in one order, and confirm you can get eight of it. The failure I see most often at this size is a split order — six of one scent and two of another because the first ran short. Six and two is worse than eight of the second choice.
7. Set expectations about when it is for. A Diwali home is already at maximum fragrance: diyas, incense, frying, flowers, guests. A diffuser gifted now is for the quiet fortnight afterwards, and it is worth saying so as you hand it over.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — a team is a group that can see itself
Eight relatives in eight cities never compare. Eight people who share a floor compare within the hour, and they do it without malice and mostly without noticing. Somebody opens theirs at a desk, somebody else glances over, somebody says what did you get, and the whole set is public. That visibility is the only structural difference between a team of eight and any other eight, and it is worth more attention than the scent, the price or the packaging. Three consequences follow, and each of them removes an option you might otherwise have taken.
Garden Bloom₹799 · 50mlTo give eight people the same thing you need a thing that fits all eight without adjustment, and most gift categories quietly fail that test. Anything edible carries a dietary question you have not asked and should not have to. Anything sized needs a size. Anything for a home assumes a shape of home. Anything that must be displayed assumes a shelf and a willingness to use it on you. A sealed glass bottle of fragrance oil is one of the few things that fits eight adults without a single enquiry into their lives. It goes on a shelf or it goes in a cupboard, and either way it has cost the recipient nothing. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the alternative default here if lavender feels too quiet for your group — rose and jasmine draws the fewest strong reactions across a mixed set of adults.Part two — eight buying patterns and what the room notices
Seven ways a team gift of eight actually gets bought, with the multiplication written out and the fairness risk named. Nothing outside the SOSA range carries a price here; the comparison that matters for a team is not cost but what eight open boxes look like side by side.
| How the eight are bought | What the room notices | The arithmetic for eight | Fairness risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eight identical 50ml bottles ★ | One gift, obviously chosen once and meant for everybody | 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 | None. There is nothing to compare |
| Eight bottles, mixed scents at mixed prices | A price ladder, legible in about a minute | 2 × ₹749 + 3 × ₹799 + 3 × ₹849 = ₹6,442 | High — the ₹100 spread becomes a rank order |
| Eight bottles, two scents at the same price | Variety without a ladder; people swap | 4 × ₹799 + 4 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 | Low, but only because the prices match exactly |
| Seven the same, one larger for the senior person | An explicit tier, in front of the seven | 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243, plus ₹1,249 = ₹6,492 | Highest on this table. Give the extra separately or not at all |
| Eight identical jar candles | A smaller, entirely consistent gesture | 8 × ₹379 = ₹3,032 | None, but it needs eight households that light candles |
| Eight identical two-bottle duos | A considered gift rather than a courtesy | 8 × ₹1,498 = ₹11,984 | None, though the scale can create an expectation next year |
| Whatever was available on the day | An accidental ladder nobody planned | Unpredictable, and usually higher than intended | Highest, and the hardest to explain afterwards |
| The honest caveat: this table assumes the eight are one group. If your eight includes two people on a different footing — a contractor, someone who joined last week, someone who works in your home rather than your office — then they are not on this list and should not be bought for out of it. And where any of the eight work for you domestically, cash comes first and separately; an object is a courtesy alongside it, never a replacement for it. | |||

Part three — when eight is not one group
The whole argument above rests on the eight being able to see each other, so it collapses cleanly when they cannot. A team of eight spread across four cities who have never met in a room is not a team for gifting purposes; it is eight separate gifts that happen to share an invoice. You can vary the scent freely there, and there is a genuine reason to: somebody in Chennai and somebody in Shimla are living in different weather, and a bright citrus composition behaves differently in a humid coastal flat than a dry woody one does in a cold hill town. If nobody will ever compare, the uniformity rule loses its force and you can buy for the person instead of the group.
The second case where eight stops being one list is a mixed team — six employees and two contractors, or seven colleagues and one person who works in your home. These are different relationships with different conventions and they should not be settled from one order. Where somebody works for you domestically, cash comes first, it is what most people would choose, and it is the established convention; an object alongside it is a courtesy and should never be presented as the substitute. Pulling that person into a team order flattens a distinction that matters, and it usually shortchanges them.
The third case is the direction of gifting. Everything on this page assumes you are buying downward or sideways — a manager buying for a team, or a team buying for itself. Buying upward is a different question with a lower ceiling and more ways to go wrong, and it is not answered by multiplying anything. One last practical note that belongs on any Diwali page: a home during the festival is already carrying diyas, incense, flowers, frying and a stream of guests, so a diffuser handed over now is really for the fortnight after, when the house is quiet again. Say that when you give it. And because fragrance oil is flammable, the bottle wants a surface well away from any lamp or candle — a handling fact worth passing on rather than assuming.
Part four — eight kinds of team of eight
Seven shapes a team of eight takes, and what I would buy for each. The multiplication is written every time. None of these are quotations and none of them carry a discount; they are the listed prices, multiplied by eight.
| The shape of your eight | What I would buy for all eight | The multiplication | Why it survives comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eight in one room, mixed ages, you know none of their homes ★ | Evening Calm 50ml | 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 | The softest thing we make, so the least likely to be actively unwanted in any of eight flats |
| Eight, and the total has a hard ceiling | Morning Freshness 50ml | 8 × ₹749 = ₹5,992 | Lowest flat rate in the reed range, and the brightest composition — nothing about it reads as the cheap option |
| Eight who have told you they dislike floral or "scented" things | Mountain Breeze 50ml | 8 × ₹849 = ₹6,792 | Dry pine, sage and cedar reads as woody rather than perfumed, which is a different objection answered |
| Eight, and last year you already gave a diffuser | Garden Bloom 50ml, a different scent at the same scale | 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 | A second scent for a second room beats a bigger bottle of the first one |
| Eight floor or support staff, alongside their bonus | Cash first, then eight identical jar candles | 8 × ₹379 = ₹3,032, separate from the cash | Right scale, entirely consistent, and it does not pretend to be anything other than a courtesy |
| Eight who will not compare — four cities, no shared room | Any two 50ml scents at the same price, chosen per person | 4 × ₹799 + 4 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 | The uniformity rule only exists to stop comparison. No comparison, no rule |
| Eight, and this is a genuine thank-you rather than a courtesy | Eight Day & Night duos, 2 × 50ml each | 8 × ₹1,498 = ₹11,984 | Two bottles that share a green note, so both can run in one flat without a seam |
Versailles
SOSA has been a small team for most of its life, and I have been on both sides of this. I have received the gift that was visibly different from everybody else's, and I have — once, early on, and I still think about it — handed out an order that came up two short and got patched with something similar. Nobody said a word. It was noticed by everybody.
What I learned from that is not about fragrance. It is that a team gift is a statement about how you see the group, and a group reads it the way groups read everything, which is comparatively. The generous instinct — to give a bit more to the person who did the most this year — is a good instinct in the wrong place. Do that privately, in a different form, on a different day.
The rest is arithmetic and honesty about what we sell. We have no bulk programme, no slab, no minimum order and no corporate desk; eight bottles goes through the store like any other order. If you are weighing a bigger order than that, write to us through the contact page and ask before you commit, rather than assuming terms that do not exist. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
