Why not five different things: five gifts means five judgements about five people's taste, and you can only check one or two of those homes. The other three are guesses, and a guess made five times produces at least one miss.
What five of one bottle actually is: a 50ml reed diffuser is a refillable glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it. The oil climbs the fibre and evaporates into the room. No flame, no socket, no switch, nothing to operate. Each one runs 6–8 weeks.
The arithmetic on the order: five bottles in one order clears the ₹499 free-shipping line comfortably. Five separate orders placed on five different evenings may not, and each one costs you the decision again.
2. The reason is not laziness — it is that you only have one good judgement in you. You can properly think about one gift. You cannot properly think about five, and the fifth one always ends up chosen at eleven at night from whatever is left on a page. Five different gifts is not five times the thought; it is one-fifth of the thought, five times over.
3. A 50ml reed diffuser is complete on its own. Glass bottle, fragrance oil, six fibre reeds. Nothing else has to be bought, nothing has to be plugged in, nothing has to be lit. For an obligation list that matters more than any other property, because a gift that needs a second purchase is a gift that stays in its wrapping.
4. Show yourself the multiplication before you decide the ceiling. 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745. 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995. 5 × ₹849 = ₹4,245. 5 × ₹1,249 = ₹6,245 if you move to 130ml, which lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. Below the reed range, 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 for jar candles and 5 × ₹474 = ₹2,370 for ceramic mugs.
5. Consider buying six. 6 × ₹749 = ₹4,494. The sixth sits on a shelf for the person who turns up unannounced, and if nobody turns up you have one for your own house. A spare is only sensible if you would be happy keeping it, which is another argument for choosing something you actually like.
6. If one of the five genuinely outranks the others, split two ways, not five. Four at ₹749 = ₹2,996 plus one 130ml at ₹1,249 gives ₹4,245 in total. Do this only when the four and the one will never be in the same room comparing.
7. If any of the five work for you, cash comes first. House help, a driver, a guard. Cash is flexible and it is what most people would choose. An object alongside is a courtesy; it is never the substitute, and it should not be presented as one.

Part one — why five is the tempting number
Nobody agonises over fifty. At fifty the answer is obvious and everyone accepts it: one thing, fifty times, and the only question is which thing. At one, the answer is also obvious: think hard about that person and buy for them. Five sits precisely in the trough between the two, where the list is short enough to feel personal and long enough to be a logistics problem, and that is why it is the hardest quantity on the whole Diwali calendar. Three things happen at five that do not happen at one, and understanding them settles the question before you open a single product page.
Garden Bloom₹799 · 50mlThe moment you buy five different things, you have privately ordered them. You know which one you would want. You know which one you bought because you had run out of ideas. That order exists whether or not anybody else ever sees it, and if any two of your five compare notes — cousins do, colleagues certainly do, neighbours on the same floor absolutely do — it stops being private. An identical gift given five times has no ranking inside it, and that is not a small thing on an obligation list. If the five will never meet, the ranking is only a problem for you; if there is any chance at all that two of them will mention it to each other, it becomes a problem you built deliberately and cannot repair. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the bottle I would repeat when the five are people I know least — rose and night-blooming jasmine is the composition with the widest agreement across a mixed group.Part two — five different things against one thing five times
Here are the six shapes a five-name Diwali list actually takes, with the multiplication written out and the failure mode named. No price appears here for anything outside our own range — the comparison that matters is not what a category costs but how many separate judgements it demands of you and where each one can go wrong.
| How you buy the five | Separate judgements you make | The arithmetic | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| One SKU, five times ★ | One | 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745 | Only if the single choice was wrong — and you had time to make it properly |
| Five different scents from one range | Five, plus a private ranking | ₹749 + ₹799 + ₹799 + ₹849 + ₹849 = ₹4,045 | Somebody gets the one you liked least, and you will know which name it was |
| Five different categories entirely | Five, each in a different market you do not know | Varies; usually more, and rarely on purpose | You cannot verify any of the five properly in the time available |
| Four identical, one larger for the name that matters | Two | 4 × ₹749 = ₹2,996, plus ₹1,249 = ₹4,245 | Only safe if the four and the one never compare — otherwise it is a visible tier |
| Five jar candles, all the same | One | 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 | Needs five households that light candles, and a home with small children is a no |
| Five two-bottle duos | One | 5 × ₹1,498 = ₹7,490 | Over-scaled for an obligation list; a duo reads as a considered gift, not a courtesy |
| The honest caveat: none of this is a case for giving less thought to the five people. It is a case for giving all of the thought to one question instead of a fifth of it to five. If your five are genuinely five different relationships at five different distances — a parent, a boss, a neighbour, a colleague and someone who works for you — then they are not one list, they are five lists of one, and this page is the wrong page. Sort them first. What is left after sorting is usually three names that belong together and two that do not. | |||

Part three — when five different gifts is genuinely right
I have argued hard for one SKU, so let me be fair to the other side, because there are lists of five where repeating yourself is the wrong instinct. The clearest one is when the five are not a group at all. If your five names are your mother, your manager, the neighbour who feeds your cat, a cousin you see annually and the woman who cleans your flat, you do not have a list of five — you have five lists of one, and the only thing they share is the week you are buying in. Sort them before you shop. Almost every list of five splits cleanly into a cluster of three or four who belong together and one or two who obviously do not, and the correct move is one SKU for the cluster and individual thought for the outliers.
The second genuine exception is the household where five bottles of the same fragrance would actually collide. Five gifts going to five different homes never collide; five gifts going to a joint family living on two floors of one building might, because two of them will end up in rooms that share air. If that is your situation, either buy two scents that share a note — Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus, Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth — or accept the collision and give one of the five something else entirely. Two unrelated compositions in connected air produce a seam neither of them was designed for.
The third exception is the one people least expect: a household that will not use it. A reed diffuser suits a home with a clear shelf at roughly waist-to-chest height, away from a fan, an air-conditioning vent and direct sun, and away from anywhere a small child or a cat can reach. If one of your five lives in a single room with a toddler, a fragrance bottle standing in oil is not the right gift and no amount of arithmetic makes it so. An Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474 is a better object for that house, and a candle is not, because a candle needs supervision. And a note that matters more at Diwali than at any other time: fragrance oil is flammable. If a bottle is going into a home where diyas will be lit, it belongs on a different surface from the lamps, well away from any open flame. That is a handling fact, not a warning about the product, and it is worth saying to the recipient when you hand it over.
Part four — five common lists of five
Seven shapes a five-name list takes, and what I would actually buy in each. The multiplication is written out every time, because the number in your head and the number on the invoice are rarely the same until you see it.
| Who the five are | What I would buy, five times | The multiplication | The honest caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five colleagues who sit in the same room ★ | Morning Freshness 50ml, identical | 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745 | They will see each other's. Identical is the entire point, and the brightest scent is the least likely to be disliked |
| Five relatives in five different cities | Garden Bloom 50ml | 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995 | You cannot check five homes, so buy the composition with the broadest agreement rather than your own favourite |
| Five neighbours on the same floor | Evening Calm 50ml | 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995 | The softest in the range, which is what you want going into flats you have never been inside |
| Five people who work for you or your building | Cash first, then five of the same jar candle or mug | 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 or 5 × ₹474 = ₹2,370, on top of the cash | Cash first, separately, and the object second. It is never the substitute and must not be presented as one |
| Five names, one of whom clearly outranks the rest | Four 50ml plus one 130ml of the same scent | 4 × ₹749 = ₹2,996, plus ₹1,249 = ₹4,245 | Only where the four and the one will never compare. The same scent in a bigger bottle reads as scale, not as a different gift |
| Five, and you want one spare on the shelf | Six of whichever bottle you chose | 6 × ₹749 = ₹4,494 | Buy the spare only if you would happily keep it yourself when nobody unexpected arrives |
| Five where the ceiling genuinely cannot move | Five identical jar candles, roughly 15–18 hours each | 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 | Below the reed floor of ₹749. Honest, complete on its own, and only for homes that light candles |
Versailles
The first year SOSA existed I had five people to buy for and I did the thing this page argues against. Five different gifts, five different shops, four evenings, and a fifth gift chosen at eleven at night out of sheer exhaustion. I remember which name got the fifth one. I do not remember what any of the other four were. That asymmetry is the whole of the argument.
What I do now is decide the category once, decide the specific bottle once, and then stop deciding. It takes twenty minutes and beats four evenings, because those minutes go on the only question with a real answer — what this object does in somebody's house for the six to eight weeks after Diwali — rather than on five unanswerable questions about five people's taste.
I will not tell you that anyone will be delighted, or that they will remember it, or that giving everyone the same thing makes you look thoughtful. I have no way of knowing any of that. I can tell you what a 50ml bottle is, how long it lasts, what it asks of the person who receives it, and what our store does not sell. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
