Three rooms, one bottle, three completely different verdicts — and none of them is a verdict on the bottle. A bathroom flatters a reed diffuser, a bedroom asks a fair question of it, and a living room asks one it cannot answer without help. The variable is the room, and it varies on three axes at once: the air there is to fragrance, the rate at which that air is thrown away, and how far you sit from the source. This page sets the three rooms side by side with SOSA's real sizing attached, so you can see which room you are trying to solve, what it will cost, and where the honest answer is to buy nothing.
Quick answers — read this first
Bathroom, around 50 sq ft: the easiest room in the home and the best value in it. Use two or three reeds rather than six — a 50ml at ₹749–₹849 then runs close to three months instead of 6–8 weeks. Full dose in there is usually too much.

Bedroom, up to about 150 sq ft: the 50ml is correctly specified, and the answer is nearly always free. Close the door, fit all six reeds, halve the bottle-to-pillow distance, keep it at nose height on a surface, and put the ceiling fan on low. The fan is the best free fix there is, because it supplies the transport a reed structurally lacks — and it shortens the bottle's life.

Living room, above 150 sq ft: the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 is the right size and it buys 14–18 weeks rather than more reach. Expect a strong corner and a greeting at the doorway, not a saturated room. If you want the whole space even, that is moved air and therefore a machine.

The rule that saves the most money: bottle volume is a duration specification, not a coverage one. Our own range proves it — Megh ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and covers only about 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon's 270–320.

The honest gap: between Safar ₹3,999 — named and sold as a car and travel diffuser — and Vaayu ₹11,999 at 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, there is no mid-sized waterless SOSA machine for one room. Sukoon ₹1,899 is very often the right answer and should not be skipped on the way to something dearer.
The short answer
Short answer: a reed diffuser's performance is decided by the room because concentration is output divided by volume, further reduced by air exchange, and read at your distance from the bottle. A bathroom of about 50 sq ft holds roughly a third of a 150 sq ft bedroom's air, usually under a lower ceiling; it is contained, with one shut door and typically no window, balcony or ceiling fan; and you are never more than a metre or two from the source. A bedroom loses on all three counts by a moderate margin. A living room loses on all three by a large one — more air, more openings, and a sofa that may be four metres from the console. The bottle's emission is identical in all three.
SOSA's real sizing, so you can match rather than guess: a 50ml suits rooms up to about 150 sq ft and lasts 6–8 weeks with six fibre reeds; a 130ml suits rooms above 150 sq ft and lasts 14–18 weeks. In a 50 sq ft bathroom, two or three reeds can stretch a 50ml to close to three months. Six reeds is full projection, three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles the life — the reed count is a volume dial, not a range dial. Flip the reeds every three to five days; a flip restores output for hours and adds no range.
Shop: bathroom and bedroom take the 50ml — Morning Freshness ₹749, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day. A living room takes the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349. If evenness across a living room is the requirement, that is moved air: Sukoon ₹1,899 at 270–320 sq ft, or Boond ₹899 for a smaller space. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Why does reed diffuser performance change so much between a bathroom, a bedroom and a living room?
1. Because the three rooms differ on volume, and volume is the denominator. A reed emits at a rate set by the oil, the reed count, the temperature and the humidity, and that rate does not care which room it is in. What changes is the air it has to fill. A 50 sq ft bathroom under a low ceiling holds roughly a third of a 150 sq ft bedroom's air; a 250 or 300 sq ft living room holds several times that again, often under the highest ceiling in the flat. The same numerator over three different denominators gives three different answers.

2. Because they differ on containment, which is invisible and usually decisive. A bathroom has one door and it is kept shut. A bedroom has a door onto a hall, a window, frequently a balcony and a ceiling fan overhead. A living room has all of that plus, very often, no wall at all between it and a dining area. Air that leaves takes the fragrance with it, so a room that exchanges its air quickly cannot accumulate scent no matter what you put in it. An open balcony door does not weaken the bottle; it flushes the room.

3. Because they differ on how close you are. A reed is a point source: concentration peaks at the reeds and falls away with distance. In a bathroom you are inside the strong zone by force of geometry. In a bedroom the bottle may be three metres from the pillow. In a living room the sofa may be four metres from the console, which puts you at the thin end of the same curve. Halving that distance is free and does more than any change of fragrance.

4. So size to the room and dose to the room, which are two separate decisions. Size: a 50ml for anything up to about 150 sq ft, running 6–8 weeks; a 130ml above that, running 14–18. Dose: six reeds is full projection, three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles the life, and two or three reeds in a 50 sq ft bathroom can stretch a 50ml to close to three months. Buying the larger bottle for a small room is over-specifying; using six reeds in a bathroom is over-dosing. Neither error is expensive, but both are avoidable.

5. And in the living room, be honest with yourself about the requirement. If you want a fragrant corner and a greeting when guests arrive, a 130ml with all six reeds placed near where people actually sit does that well. If you want the same intensity at the sofa, the dining table and the doorway simultaneously, that is evenness, evenness is a property of moved air, and no passive object supplies it at any price. Then a machine is the honest answer — Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft — with the trades stated: water-diluted oil, added humidity, filling, switching on, and a scent change, because reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, made in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: bathroom, use less — two or three reeds and a 50ml runs nearly three months. Bedroom, use all six and close the door; the 50ml is correct up to about 150 sq ft. Living room, use a 130ml for the weeks and expect a zone, or move to a machine for evenness.
SOSA Garden Bloom rose and jasmine reed diffuser
The size that matches a living room
Garden Bloom 130ml · British rose + night-blooming jasmine ₹1,299
A 130ml is built for rooms above 150 sq ft, and what the extra ₹500 buys is 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 rather than any additional reach. Garden Bloom holds its indole below the threshold at which jasmine turns animalic, which is why it stays floral through an Indian summer above 30°C rather than going heavy. Six fibre reeds, refillable glass, alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier. In a room this size, use all six.

The three rooms, one at a time

The useful way to read this section is to find your room, then look at the one above and below it, because the contrast is what makes the mechanism legible. Each of these rooms is asking a different question of the same object.

1
ROOM ONE · THE BATHROOM, ~50 SQ FT
The room where using less is both better and cheaper
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749Everything a passive diffuser needs, a bathroom supplies for free: the smallest volume in the flat, usually the lowest ceiling, one door that stays shut, rarely an openable window worth the name, no balcony and no ceiling fan. And it is too small to let you leave the fragrant zone. The consequence is the single best-value placement in most homes — two or three reeds in a 50 sq ft bathroom can make a 50ml bottle last close to three months instead of 6–8 weeks, and it will still be emphatic. Use six in there and you are paying for intensity you do not want. One caution: this is efficiency, not deodorising. Fragrance mixes with a smell rather than cancelling it, so the honest order is always source, then ventilation, then fragrance.
What to do here: half dose, and consider the softer end of the range. In a small sealed room, 8.9 is often better judged than 9.5.
2
ROOM TWO · THE BEDROOM, UP TO ~150 SQ FT
The fair question — and the one that is usually answered for nothing
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799A bedroom of 150 sq ft is inside what a 50ml is built for, so the size is not the problem and a larger bottle is not the fix. What differs from the bathroom is leakage and distance. Most bedrooms are not the volume on their floor plan: a door open onto a hall, a window on the latch, an attached bathroom, a balcony. And the bed is usually the furthest point from wherever the bottle looks best. So the levers are containment, dose, geometry, and then transport. Close the door. Fit all six reeds. Move the bottle within reach of the bed at roughly nose height, on a surface rather than the floor or a wardrobe top. Then run the ceiling fan on low, which is the best free change in this entire subject, because a fan is the transport a reed does not have. It will empty the bottle sooner, and you should decide that trade knowingly.
What to do here: door, then reeds, then position, then fan — one change a day, so you know which one worked.
3
ROOM THREE · THE LIVING ROOM, ABOVE 150 SQ FT
Where a passive source honestly reaches its limit
Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹1,299Here every term moves against the bottle at once: several times the air, often the tallest ceiling, the most openings, an adjoining dining area with no door, and seating positions several metres from any sensible surface. A 130ml with all six reeds is the right specification and it will give you a genuinely lovely fragrant zone plus a greeting at the doorway, which is most of what visitors register. What it will not give you is the same intensity everywhere in the room, and no reed count, bottle size or stronger scent produces that, because all of those raise emission and none of them adds transport. Two diffusers do not solve it either — two passive sources make two concentration peaks with a valley between, since the midpoint is the farthest point from both. Two is genuinely right for a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, for two rooms that are really one volume, for different scents in different zones, or on a budget short of a machine. It is not right when the goal is evenness across one open volume.
What to do here: place it where people sit rather than where the room looks empty, and decide whether you want a zone or a room.

SOSA's real sizing, and what it is a specification of

Two numbers govern everything above, and they are worth stating exactly, because they are the two most misread numbers in the category. A 50ml suits rooms up to about 150 sq ft and lasts 6–8 weeks. A 130ml suits rooms above 150 sq ft and lasts 14–18 weeks. Both come with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, and both work out at roughly ₹13–₹15 a day, which is a fairer way to think about a ₹749 bottle that runs for two months than the sticker price is. Those are the only two sizes SOSA makes; if you have seen a 100ml or a 200ml, it belongs to another brand, and the sizing above still applies to your room even if it does not apply to your bottle.

Here is what those numbers are a specification of. The room figure tells you the size of space in which the bottle will smell as intended. The weeks figure tells you how long it will do that for. They are not the same claim, and the second one is not a coverage claim in disguise. A bigger bottle holds more oil, so it lasts longer; the rate at which oil leaves the reeds is set by the reed surface, the temperature and the airflow, and it barely changes when the reservoir underneath gets deeper. That is the whole reason volume is duration and not coverage. If you want it demonstrated with something other than a reed, look at our own machines: Megh at ₹3,499 carries six litres of water and runs for about a hundred hours, and covers only around 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon's 270–320. Twelve times the tank, less of the room. Tank size is runtime.

The corollary is a purchase I would talk most people out of. Is the 130ml better value? Per week, yes — 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for about ₹500 more. But only if the room needs it. In a 120 sq ft bedroom it is over-specified, and the money would be better spent on a second 50ml in a second room, since a home that smells identical everywhere stops registering as a smell within a week. And in a bathroom the 130ml is close to pointless: you would be buying a larger reservoir for a room where the correct move is to remove half the reeds. The 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is a different matter — it is oil only, useless without a bottle and reeds you already own, and it is the item on our shelf most often bought by mistake. For someone tired of repurchasing, though, it is roughly six 50ml fills, which is the honest answer to that particular frustration.

The three rooms side by side

One bottle, read against three rooms. The product column is identical throughout — that is the point of the table, and the reason none of this is a verdict on the oil.

Bathroom, bedroom, living room
The same reed diffuser, specified properly for each space
Room Air to fragrance Containment Your distance Right size and dose What to expect
Bathroom, ~50 sq ft Least, and usually the lowest ceiling Excellent — one shut door, no balcony, no fan Never more than a metre or two 50ml, two or three reeds — runs close to three months Emphatic. Full dose is usually too much
Bedroom, ~100 sq ft, door shut Roughly twice the bathroom Good if the window and balcony are shut One to three metres, depending on placement 50ml, three reeds for soft or six for full projection Clearly present; strongest near the bottle
Bedroom, ~150 sq ft, door open Far more than 150 sq ft — the hall counts Poor. Air leaves continuously all evening Often three or four metres from the pillow 50ml, all six reeds — but fix the door first Faint from the bed. The commonest complaint in the category
Living room, 250 sq ft Several times a bedroom, often the tallest ceiling Usually poor — more doors, frequently open plan Four metres or more from the sofa is normal 130ml, all six reeds, 14–18 weeks A strong corner and a greeting at the door, not a saturated room
Open-plan living-dining No true boundary on one side Poor by design Varies enormously across the space 130ml, or two bottles treated as two zones Zones. For evenness this is where a machine earns its price

One size for each room, and the machine where a reed stops
The SOSA principle
Size the bottle to the room. Dose the reeds to the room. They are two different decisions and only one of them costs money.
Which is why the bathroom, the cheapest room to fragrance, is also the room where most people are using twice as much product as it needs.

The living room, honestly

Of the three, this is the room where I most often tell someone that a reed alone will not do what they are picturing, and I would rather say it here than let a hopeful product page say otherwise. The picture in most people's heads is a hotel lobby: fragrance that seems to be in the air itself rather than coming from an object, present at the door, at the seating, at the far end, with nothing visible producing it. That effect is produced by introducing scent into a building's moving air, which is why you can never find the diffuser in a hotel — there often is not one in the room to find. It is a transport solution, not a stronger fragrance, and no passive object reproduces it.

What a reed does very well in a living room is the arrival. Someone walking in crosses the gradient from a hall with almost nothing in the air to a room with a fragrant zone in it, in the space of a step, and the nose reports change far better than steady state — which is why a well-placed 130ml gets remarked on by guests who then cannot find where it is coming from. Place it accordingly: near where people actually sit or pass, not in the visually empty corner; out of the draught between two openings, since cross-ventilation behaves like a straight line through the room and takes everything on that line with it; and never directly in a running AC's blast, which strips the reeds and throws the fragrance at one wall.

And if evenness genuinely is the requirement, the honest ladder is short and the first rung is cheaper than people expect. Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft with a 500ml tank and 16–18 hours on the low setting, and three 15ml Hotel Collection scents are included; it should never be skipped on the way to something dearer. Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless cold diffusion of undiluted oil, cordless with three speeds and a 1, 2 or 3-hour timer — and it is named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, so it is a personal-scale device rather than a room machine, and it is not set-and-forget. Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, and earns its price on a whole floor or an open-plan living-dining, not on one bedroom. Between Safar and Vaayu there is nothing, and I would rather name that gap than pretend one of them is the missing size. The trade in all cases: a machine needs power, filling or charging, and it has a service life — where a reed is silent, works in a power cut, needs nothing remembered, costs roughly ₹13–₹15 a day and never breaks. And it may mean changing scent, since reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine and the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds.

The bathroom is the room where you should use less of the product. It is also the only room in the house where using less makes it stronger and cheaper at the same time.

What to buy for each room

Three rooms, three answers, in the order I would actually spend. The free row is first because it settles the bedroom for a large share of people, and the last row is the thing this range does not have.

Room by room
The right size and dose for each space — and the honest gap
Buy What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. Nothing — re-dose and reposition ★ Reeds out in the bathroom, all six in the bedroom, door shut, bottle nearer at nose height, ceiling fan on low First, in every room. In a bedroom this is the whole answer for most people, and in a bathroom it doubles the bottle's life ₹0
2. 50ml for a bathroom Six fibre reeds supplied; use two or three. Morning Freshness ₹749, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 The best-value placement in most homes — at half dose a 50ml runs close to three months instead of 6–8 weeks ₹749–₹849
3. 50ml for a bedroom Built for rooms up to about 150 sq ft, 6–8 weeks at full dose, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day Correctly specified up to 150 sq ft. Do not upgrade the size for reach — fix the door and the distance instead ₹749–₹849
4. 130ml for a living room For rooms above 150 sq ft, 14–18 weeks with all six reeds The right size above 150 sq ft, bought for the weeks. Expect a strong zone and a greeting at the door rather than a saturated room ₹1,249–₹1,349
5. Sukoon, or Boond for a smaller room Ultrasonic: 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18h on low, three 15ml scents included. Boond ₹899 is 300ml, up to about 150 sq ft, ~6h When evenness across a living room is the requirement. Water-diluted, adds humidity, needs filling, and will not run reed oil ₹899 / ₹1,899
The honest gap: no mid-sized waterless machine Safar ₹3,999 is waterless cold diffusion of undiluted oil, cordless, three speeds, a 1 / 2 / 3-hour timer — named and sold as a car and travel diffuser. Vaayu ₹11,999 is 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft Nothing sits between them for one room. Vaayu is the wrong purchase for a bedroom, and Safar is not set-and-forget — the timer runs hours and it needs recharging —
Honest notes for buyers: SOSA reeds come in 50ml and 130ml only, alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, tested at 45°C and 85% RH and composed in Pune. Refills at 300ml ₹2,399 are oil only — roughly six 50ml fills, and useless without a bottle and reeds you already own. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are separate products and cannot be swapped in either direction; there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill rather than a way in. Fragrance does not remove a smell — source, then ventilation, then fragrance. Longevity figures assume ordinary Indian household use and shorten under a fan, in a hot room or under a running AC. SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duo
Two rooms rather than one bigger bottle
Fresh & Grounded duo · 50ml × 2 ₹1,548
If you are scenting a flat rather than a room, two 50ml bottles of different registers beat one 130ml of the same scent, because a home that smells identical everywhere stops registering as a smell within a week. Morning Freshness for the bathroom or kitchen and Mountain Breeze for the bedroom or study is the pairing I recommend most. Two bottles, six fibre reeds each, 6–8 weeks apiece — and in the bathroom, at two or three reeds, considerably longer.

A note from Sonal

If I could put one line on the outside of every reed diffuser box in this country, it would be this: the reeds are a volume dial and almost nobody uses them as one. Six is not the correct number, it is the maximum number. In a bathroom it is roughly twice what the room wants, and taking three out will make the bottle last close to three months and smell better while it does. In a living room six is right and still will not saturate the space. The same six sticks, two opposite pieces of advice, and neither is printed anywhere at the point of sale.

The second line would be about size. Our own sizing is written against rooms — 50ml to about 150 sq ft, 130ml above it — and yet when a room disappoints someone, the lever they reach for is a bigger bottle, because that is the only lever a shop can sell in thirty seconds. A bigger bottle is more weeks. It has never been more metres, and I would rather lose the extra ₹500 than have someone discover that in the eighth week.

And the third would be about India specifically, because this is the hard climate for the category rather than the easy one. Forty-degree afternoons, monsoon air at 85% humidity, rooms sealed and air-conditioned at night and wide open by day. That is why every SOSA reed sits on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, which can crack and turn bitter above 40°C, and why the reeds are fibre rather than rattan — rattan has irregular internal channels and wicks unevenly in high humidity, fading at the dry end. Neither decision appears in a note list. Both are the reason the same bottle behaves predictably in whichever of your three rooms it ends up in. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a reed diffuser work better in a bathroom than a bedroom or living room?
Because concentration is output divided by volume, further reduced by air exchange, and read at your distance from the bottle. A 50 sq ft bathroom holds roughly a third of a 150 sq ft bedroom's air, usually under a lower ceiling; it is contained, with one shut door and typically no window, balcony or ceiling fan; and you are never more than a metre or two from the source. A living room loses on all three counts by a much larger margin.
What size SOSA reed diffuser do I need for each room?
A 50ml for anything up to about 150 sq ft — bathroom, bedroom, home office — lasting 6–8 weeks with six fibre reeds. A 130ml for rooms above 150 sq ft, lasting 14–18 weeks. Those are the only two sizes SOSA makes. In a 50 sq ft bathroom use two or three reeds rather than six, and the 50ml will run close to three months.
Is the 130ml better value than the 50ml?
Per week, yes — 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for about ₹500 more. But only if the room needs it. In a 120 sq ft bedroom it is over-specified, and the same money is better spent on a second 50ml for a second room, since a home that smells identical everywhere stops registering within a week. Volume is a duration specification, never a coverage one.
Would two reed diffusers make my living room evenly fragranced?
No. Two passive sources produce two concentration peaks with a valley between them, because neither moves air and the midpoint is the farthest point from both. Two is genuinely right for a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, for two rooms that are really one volume, for different scents in different zones, or on a budget short of a machine. It is not right when the goal is evenness across one open volume.
What do I buy if I want a living room that is fragranced everywhere?
Moved air, which means a machine. Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft for 16–18 hours on low and is very often the right answer; Boond at ₹899 covers up to about 150 sq ft. Both dilute the oil in water and add humidity, and neither runs reed oil. Megh at ₹3,499 is a runtime machine, not a coverage upgrade — six litres and only about 215 sq ft. Vaayu at ₹11,999 belongs on a whole floor or an open-plan living-dining, not in one bedroom.
