A day on a hanger, and washing before rather than after
Start with what to do with the garment in your hands right now, because most of it is free and it works. Hang it — do not fold it back — in moving air for a full day rather than for an hour. The equilibrium that produced the smell is broken by giving the fibre somewhere to release into, and desorption from a woven surface is slow: an hour takes the edge off and misleads you into thinking it has not worked, while twenty-four hours in a room with a window open and a fan running usually finishes the job entirely.
