Watch a customer come through the door of an appliance showroom and count to ninety. In that minute and a half they cross a threshold, stop at a first display, walk a corridor of kitchens, and sit down. What they smell at each of those four points is decided by where the machine is, and the machine is almost always in the wrong place.
Quick answers — read this first
What should customers smell when they enter a luxury appliance showroom? At the door itself, almost nothing - the entrance is a draught whose air is exchanged many times an hour, and no fragrance survives it. Ten metres in, at the first display, a dry and clean register that reads as a well-kept home: cedar, sage and light woods, or lemon-mint on a white floor. By the time they sit at the specification table, nothing they could name. Noticed once, then forgotten. That sequence is a placement, not a strength.

Why can't the entrance be scented properly? Because a street or mall door exchanges the threshold air many times an hour, and any fragrance placed there is carried straight out. Owners respond by turning the machine up until the door registers, which makes the rest of the floor loud for the advisor who stands in it nine hours. The honest answer is to accept the door, place the source inward on the wall the AC supply crosses, and let the first display be where the customer arrives in the fragrance.

What is the honest product answer? Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Mountain Breeze reed (Rs 849) or Morning Freshness reed (Rs 749) at the reception desk, never at the door. From about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999), wall-mounted deep on the floor where the supply carries it toward the displays and away from the entrance and the returns, on a timer and key-locked. From about 3,000 sq ft, one SOSA Angaan (Rs 25,999). Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting; SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: a draught at the door that cannot be scented; a dry, clean register noticed at the first display ten metres in; and nothing they can name by the specification table. The sequence is made by placing the source inward, on the AC path, away from the entrance - never by turning it up.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) wall-mounted deep on a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft; one Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) or Morning Freshness (₹749) at the reception desk of a studio; one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) past about 3,000 sq ft.
Next step: mark the entrance, the first display, the specification table and the AC supply and returns on a plan, and we will mark where the source goes so the first display is the arrival point - ask for a showroom scenting plan.
What a customer smells in the first ninety seconds, in five linesAt the door: a draught - accept it, it cannot be scentedAt the first display: dry, clean, a well-kept home - noticedBy the specification table: nothing they can name - forgottenMade by placing the source inward, on the AC pathNever by turning it up to reach the threshold
The entrance is where owners want the fragrance and where it can never live. The first display is where it should arrive.
Straight answer
What should customers smell when they enter a luxury appliance showroom?
Three different things at three different points, and the order matters more than the note. At the door, almost nothing. This is the part owners resist, so it is worth being blunt about the physics. A showroom entrance on a street or a mall concourse exchanges its air many times an hour: every opening pulls a slab of outside air across the threshold and pushes a slab of yours out. Any fragrance placed near the door is carried away as fast as it arrives. There is no fragrance solution to an open door, and the attempts at one all go the same way - the machine is moved toward the entrance, it still does not register there, so it is turned up, and now the rest of the floor is loud for the advisor who stands in it nine hours while the door still smells of the car park. Accept the door. It is a draught and a threshold, and its job is to be crossed. At the first display, a dry and clean register, noticed. About ten metres in, when the customer stops at the first island or the first run of appliances, the fragrance should arrive - once, quietly, as the smell of a well-kept home: cedar, sage and light woods on a floor of walnut, stone and dark glass, Mountain Breeze; lemon and mint on a white, glass, handleless one, Morning Freshness. Nothing sweet, nothing edible, because the live kitchen and coffee counter own food smells, and nothing that could be mistaken for a candle. This is the one point in the walk where the register is meant to register. By the specification table, nothing they can name. Sixty to ninety seconds in, the customer sits down with an advisor or an architect and starts comparing finishes, and from here on the fragrance should be forgotten: present, if you asked them, but un-nameable. That is the level test for the whole floor, and the specification table is where it is judged. Now the important part. That sequence - draught, noticed, forgotten - is made by placement, not by strength. The source goes inward, deep on the floor, high on the wall the AC supply crosses, so the conditioned air carries the register across the displays toward the entrance and the fragrance thins naturally as it approaches the door and the returns. Placed that way, the customer walks into the fragrance rather than through it: nothing at the threshold, arrival at the first display, a gentle fade toward the table. Placed at the entrance, the sequence runs backwards and nothing about it can be fixed with the dial. A wall or HVAC mount is what makes the inward wall possible rather than the nearest socket, and the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 has both, along with adjustable intensity so the first-display arrival can be set with the team, a key-lock so nobody turns it up to chase the door, a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer so it is off while a demonstration runs, and waterless delivery so it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on the displays. One per connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft; one SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999 on the plant past about 3,000. Under about 750 sq ft the same logic puts a reed at the reception desk, ₹749 or ₹849, never on a plinth by the door, or a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the honest note that it is water-based. Two things must not be part of the first ninety seconds. The first is any smell the customer did not choose - new plastic, warm dust, cardboard, sealed overnight air - because a fragrance over those is a worse third smell and the entrance is where it is met first. The second is the coffee counter's or the live kitchen's smell mixing with the register on the way in; those zones stay unscented, and if the walk passes them, the source sits on the far side of the floor from them. What a premium home-appliance showroom should smell like sets the register the customer meets at the first display; should a scent machine go near the entrance or deeper inside is the placement question in full; how to choose a signature scent for a premium appliance brand is the method. And the frame: fragrance is an interiors and hospitality decision, like lighting or music. SOSA makes no claim that what a customer smells on arrival changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish on display. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction, and the demo kitchen and coffee counter stay unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan with the entrance and the AC marked.
A draught at the door - accept it; a dry, clean register noticed at the first display; nothing they can name by the specification table. Made by placing the source inward on the AC path, never by turning up. Vaayu (Rs 11,999) wall-mounted deep on the floor from about 1,500 sq ft; a reed at the desk below.

SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - on one unit, Rs 11,999. Adjustable intensity so the first-display arrival is set with the team; key-lock so nobody turns it up to chase the entrance; 1h/4h/8h/24h timer; under 38dB. No water, no residue.

The four points of the walk, and the placement that makes them

Follow the customer through the door and stop at each point. The first three cards are what each point should smell of; the fourth is the placement that produces all three; the fifth is what must be kept out of the walk entirely.

1
The door
A draught and a threshold - it has no fragrance solution
The entrance is where every owner wants the fragrance to be and where it can never live. A street or mall door exchanges the threshold air many times an hour; every opening pulls outside air across and pushes yours out, and a glass front on a concourse does it continuously. Fragrance placed there is gone as fast as it arrives, and the attempts to fix that all end the same way: the machine creeps toward the door, still fails to register, gets turned up, and the whole floor becomes loud for the people who work in it while the threshold still smells of the concourse. So the door is accepted. It is crossed, not scented. The one thing that should be true of it is that it smells of nothing wrong - no packaging, no warm dust from a display by the entrance, no cardboard - because whatever is met first is met hardest. How constantly opening glass doors affect fragrance is the open-door fact in full.
Rule: if the fragrance registers at the door, the rest of the floor is too loud.
2
The first display
Ten metres in - the one place the register should register
About ten metres in, the customer stops for the first time - at the first island, the first run of built-in ovens, the first screen wall - and this is where the fragrance arrives. Once, quietly, as the smell of a well-kept home. On a floor of walnut, stone and dark glass that is cedar, sage and light woods, Mountain Breeze; on a white, glass, handleless floor it is lemon and mint, Morning Freshness. This is the only point in the walk where the register is meant to be noticed, and even here it should read as the building rather than a bottle: a visitor who thinks "this is a well-kept place" has got it; a visitor who thinks "what is that fragrance?" has met it too strongly. The first display is also where placement is checked: if the arrival happens here, the source is in the right place; if it happens at the door or not until the table, it is not. Fresh, woody or hotel-like decides which register is met here.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Mountain Breeze - pine, sage and cedar. The register a customer should meet, once, at the first display.
See Mountain Breeze →
3
The specification table
Sixty to ninety seconds in - forgotten, and un-nameable
Within a minute or so the customer is sitting down - with an advisor at the desk, or with their architect at the specification table with a spread of finish samples - and from here the fragrance should be forgotten. Present, if they were asked, but nothing they could name, and nothing that sits on the samples they are comparing. This is where the level for the whole floor is judged, at five in the afternoon, by the team, because the table is where the fragrance is met for longest. It is also why the arrival at the first display has to be quiet: a register strong enough to announce itself at ten metres is still announcing itself at the table ninety seconds later. The table is the far point of the walk, and the fragrance should have thinned on the way there because the source is placed so that the air carries it toward the entrance, not because it was set faint. How strong fragrance should be inside an experience centre is the level judged from this table; how strong it should be around specification tables is the table itself.
Test: if anyone at the table can name the fragrance, the arrival at the first display was too loud.
4
The placement
Inward, high, on the wall the supply crosses
All three points are produced by one decision: where the source sits. It goes inward - deep on the floor, not at the entrance - and high on the wall the AC supply crosses, so that conditioned air picks the register up and carries it across the displays toward the door, thinning as it goes and leaving with the returns. Placed that way, the customer walks into the fragrance: nothing at the draught, arrival at the first display, a natural fade by the table. Placed at the entrance, the sequence runs backwards and the dial cannot fix it. The wall matters as well as the position: a timber-clad or panelled reception wall absorbs a little, a glass wall throws everything back. A wall or HVAC mount is what makes the right wall available rather than the nearest socket, and that is the reason the Vaayu is specified for this rather than a freestanding unit on a plinth. If the floor has running demo appliances between the source and the door - a display AC, a chimney - they will strip the register from their zone, and the placement accounts for them rather than fighting them. Entrance or deeper inside and where the machine goes with central AC are the two placement pages.

What is kept out
No smell the customer did not choose, and no demonstration on the way in
Two things must not be part of the first ninety seconds. The first is any smell that was not chosen: new plastic off a display unboxed on the floor, warm dust on the vents of a unit by the entrance, cardboard through an open store door, the flat sealed air of the previous night. These are met first and met hardest, and a fragrance laid over any of them makes a third smell that is worse than either; the fix is unboxing in the back, cleaning tops and vents, closing the store door and running fresh air before opening. The second is the demonstration. If the walk from the door passes a coffee counter or a live kitchen, those zones stay unscented and the source sits on the far side of the floor from them, so that the customer does not meet coffee and cedar in the same breath. Two smells in one air make a third, and the third is what is remembered. How to make an appliance showroom smell more luxurious is the subtraction; how to scent the reception without fragrancing the demo area is the separation.
Rule: the first ninety seconds should contain one chosen smell, met once, and nothing else.
The SOSA principle
A customer entering an appliance showroom should meet a draught, then a well-kept home, then nothing they can name - a sequence made by placing the source inward, and unmade by turning it up.
The door cannot be scented. The first display is the arrival. The table is the test. The machine lives deep on the floor, on the wall the air crosses.
SOSA Vaayu
Deep on the floor, on the wall the supply crosses: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999, wall or HVAC mount, waterless, timer and key-lock, up to 1000m³ of connected floor.

Second by second: the customer's first ninety seconds

Here is the walk as a timeline. Stand at the door with a stopwatch and someone from the floor team, walk it at five in the afternoon, and check each row against what you actually smell.

The SOSA walk
The first ninety seconds through an appliance showroom, second by second
When and where What the customer should smell
0-10 seconds: crossing the door
Almost nothing. A draught and a threshold; the air here is exchanged many times an hour. Nothing wrong either - no packaging, no dust, no cardboard.
SOSA Vaayu10-30 seconds: the first display, ten metres in
The register, noticed once - a well-kept home, dry and clean. The source is inward and high on the supply wall, so this is where the air delivers it. A Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft. View →
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser30-60 seconds: the corridor between the display kitchens
A trace of the same register, carried by the AC, thinning. Nothing placed inside a display kitchen. On a studio floor this is where the desk reed is met - Mountain Breeze. View →
60-90 seconds: sitting down at the desk or specification table
Nothing they can name. Present if asked, forgotten in practice, and not sitting on the finish samples. This is where the level is judged.
Passing the coffee counter or live kitchen on the way
The coffee, or the cooking, and nothing else. Those zones are unscented; the source is on the far side of the floor from them so the two are never met in one breath.
SOSA AngaanThe second floor, or a separately air-handled wing
The same sequence again from its own source - a second Vaayu for a second volume, or one Angaan on a shared plant past about 3,000 sq ft. View →

Three sibling pages carry the walk further: should a luxury appliance showroom smell like a beautiful home is the register met at the first display, should a premium appliance experience centre have a signature fragrance is what happens when the same customer walks in a fourth time, and what fragrance suits a high-end kitchen studio is the walk at studio scale, where the desk reed is the arrival. SOSA makes no claim that any of this changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish on display.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The arrival, at studio scale: Mountain Breeze, ₹849 for 50ml, at the reception desk where the customer sits down - never on a plinth by the door.

A note from Sonal

The first thing I do on a showroom visit is stand outside the door for a minute and watch it open and close. On a mall concourse it barely closes at all. Then I ask where the machine is, and it is by the door, because that is where the owner wants the customer to meet the fragrance, and it has been turned up twice since it was installed because nobody could smell it there. Of course they could not. The door is a draught. Whatever you put beside it leaves with the next customer who comes in, and the only thing turning it up achieves is that the advisor at the far desk has been breathing too much of it since March.

So I walk the owner through their own floor with a stopwatch and ask them to count. Door, first display, corridor, table. Ninety seconds, more or less, and at each point I ask what they would want a customer to smell. Nothing at the door, they agree, once they think about it - just nothing wrong. Something at the first display, quietly. Nothing they could name by the time they sit down. That is a placement, I tell them, and it is the opposite of the one they have. The Vaayu goes on the inward wall the supply crosses, high, and the customer walks into the fragrance instead of watching it walk out. The key goes in the lock so nobody chases the door again.

A studio is the same walk at smaller scale, and the Mountain Breeze reed goes on the desk where the customer sits down, not on a plinth at the entrance. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed inward from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor; one Angaan on the plant past 3,000; nothing in the coffee counter or the live kitchen on the way. And the frame around it, as always: an interiors decision like lighting or music, with no claim that what a customer smells on arrival moves footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to anything on display. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't a customer smell the fragrance at the entrance of my appliance showroom?
Because the entrance is a draught. A street or mall door exchanges the threshold air many times an hour, and a glass front on a concourse does it almost continuously, so any fragrance near the door is carried out as fast as it arrives. That is not a fault of the machine or the level, and turning up to reach the door only makes the rest of the floor loud for the advisor who works in it. Accept the door, place the source inward, and let the first display be where the customer meets the register.
At what point in the walk should a customer first notice the showroom fragrance?
At the first display, about ten metres in, when they stop for the first time at an island, an appliance run or a screen wall. That is the one point where the register is meant to register - once, quietly, as the smell of a well-kept home rather than a bottle. By the time they sit down at the desk or the specification table, sixty to ninety seconds in, it should be forgotten and un-nameable. Draught, noticed, forgotten: that is the sequence.
Where should the scent machine be placed so the first display is the arrival point?
Inward - deep on the floor, not near the entrance - and high on the wall the AC supply crosses, so the conditioned air carries the register across the displays toward the door and it thins naturally on the way, leaving with the returns. Choose an absorbing wall rather than a glass one. A wall or HVAC mount, which the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 has, is what makes that wall available rather than the nearest socket. In a studio, the reed goes on the reception desk, never on a plinth by the door.
What should be kept out of a customer's first minute in an appliance showroom?
Two things. Any smell the customer did not choose - new plastic off a display unboxed on the floor, warm dust on vents by the entrance, cardboard through an open store door, sealed overnight air - because it is met first and hardest, and a fragrance over it makes a worse third smell. And the demonstration: if the walk passes a coffee counter or a live kitchen, those zones stay unscented and the source sits on the far side of the floor, so coffee and cedar are never met in one breath.
Does what customers smell on entering an appliance showroom make them more likely to buy?
SOSA makes no such claim, and would not accept one from a supplier. What a customer smells on arrival is an interiors and hospitality decision, like the lighting at the door or the music on the floor, planned because a showroom designed as a home should be entered like one. It does not change footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales in any way SOSA will assert, and SOSA makes no claim about what the fragrance does to any appliance, screen or finish on display.

Ambient fragrance in a showroom is an interior and hospitality decision: SOSA makes no claim that it changes dwell time, footfall, conversion, basket size, sales or any other business number, no claim about what it does to any appliance, surface or finish on display, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Warranty, installation, service and bulk terms are confirmed with SOSA directly. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or appliance brand named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
