One register, yes. One level and one machine type, no. Those are separate decisions and conflating them is what produces either monotony or incoherence.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a hotel use one fragrance throughout? One register throughout keeps the property coherent, but delivery and level should differ by area: a machine in the enclosed lobby, reeds in guest rooms, and usually nothing in corridors.
Why not different fragrances in different areas? Because a guest moving between them in ninety seconds experiences a change of subject rather than a property. Different registers read as different decisions taken by different people.
Should corridors match? Corridors usually get nothing, whether open or enclosed, which is a specification rather than an omission. Guest rooms take reed diffusers from ₹749 rather than machines.
The short answer
Short answer: One register everywhere it appears. Different levels and delivery per area, and corridors normally none at all.

Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Should reception, corridors and guest rooms all use the same fragrance?
The same register, delivered differently and at different levels, and with corridors usually excluded altogether. Take the three decisions separately, because they get conflated constantly.Register: one, throughout. A guest crossing from an enclosed lobby to a room in ninety seconds should not experience two unrelated fragrances; when they do, the property reads as a set of decisions taken by different people rather than as a place. Level: different, and counterintuitively. The lobby is set highest of the scented areas because dwell there is two minutes, while a guest room is occupied for eight to ten hours including sleep and must therefore be far lower - the instinct to give the nicest room the strongest scent produces exactly the wrong outcome. Delivery: different by necessity. An enclosed lobby takes a machine sized to its volume. A guest room takes reeds, not a machine, because reeds are passive, low, silent, need no power point by the bed, and can be physically removed in thirty seconds when a guest asks for an unscented room - which should be offered rather than negotiated. Corridors: normally nothing. In Jaipur properties many are arcaded or courtyard-facing and cannot hold a level at any setting, and an enclosed corridor is transit space nobody occupies for more than half a minute. The unscented gap between scented rooms also does useful work, since uniformity across every space is exactly what makes a property smell like a system rather than a building. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the lobby, reed diffusers from ₹749 in rooms, both on the same Hotel Collection register from ₹299. SOSA makes no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend and is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: same register, three treatments - machine, reeds, and nothing.

One register, three delivery methods
Three separate questions get asked as one, which is why the answers so often contradict each other.
Why this works
Three decisions, taken separately
The machine most independent Jaipur hotels use in the lobby: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot creep. Fragrance from ₹299.
A guest walking from lobby to room passes through the property in under two minutes, and two unrelated fragrances in that span reads as incoherence rather than variety. The same register at three intensities reads as one place seen from three distances, which is what you want. This is the one place where matching matters more than optimising each room individually.
Tip: Two registers in ninety seconds is a change of subject, not a journey.
02
Why rooms go lowest
Ten hours, including sleep
A guest room is the longest continuous exposure in the building and it belongs to one party whose sensitivity you cannot know in advance. Reeds at a low level, with fewer sticks than the pack suggests, are the right specification, and the ability to remove them entirely in half a minute is the feature that matters most. A machine in a bedroom removes that option and adds a noise source beside the bed.
03
Why corridors get nothing
Transit, or open air, or both
Arcaded and courtyard-facing corridors cannot hold a level; enclosed ones are crossed in thirty seconds. Either way a machine there buys very little and consumes refills steadily, and the unscented gap between two faintly scented rooms is doing real work by preventing the uniform, seamless smell that reads as commercial. Write the corridors into the plan as none, so nobody fills them later.
Tip: The gaps are part of the design, not a shortfall in it.
The SOSA principle
Same register, three intensities, one of them zero.
That is the whole of a coherent hotel scenting plan.

Why different fragrances read as different suppliers
Because the same register has to work as a faint lobby background and as a quiet presence in a bedroom at three in the morning, restraint in the original choice is doing double duty.

The nicest room in the hotel should have the least fragrance in it, because somebody sleeps there.

The SOSA commercial range
Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for hotels: fragrance is an ambience decision only and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A hotel is a crowd environment with guests who stay for days, so restrained registers and low, locked levels are recommended; guest rooms should have an unscented option available on request, and any area sharing air with food service should be left unscented or switched off through service. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal
The thing that makes a small hotel memorable is not an unusual fragrance. It is that the place smelled the same on Tuesday morning as it did when the guest walked in on Sunday night - and the same again two years later when they came back. Consistency is the entire mechanism, and it is available to a twelve-room property on exactly the same terms as a chain.
Which is why almost all of my advice to boutique owners is about restraint and locking. Set the level from the doorway, not from the desk you have been sitting at for an hour, because your nose has already adapted and theirs has not. Then lock it. The commonest failure I see is not a bad choice of scent; it is a machine that drifted upward over eight months because somebody kept nudging it.
The limits I hold to. Fragrance is an ambience decision, never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you want a lobby sized properly, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Should reception, corridors and rooms share one fragrance?
One register throughout keeps the property coherent, but levels and delivery differ by area, and corridors usually get nothing at all.
Why should guest rooms be lower?
Because they are the longest continuous exposure in the building, including sleep, and the guest's sensitivity cannot be known in advance.
Should guest rooms have machines?
Reeds are the usual specification: passive, silent, no power point needed, and removable in thirty seconds when a guest asks for an unscented room.
Why leave corridors unscented?
Most are open or arcaded and cannot hold a level, enclosed ones are crossed in seconds, and the unscented gaps stop the property smelling like a system.
Should unscented rooms be offered?
Yes, as a standard option at booking rather than something a guest has to request at the desk. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
