Arrival, corridor and room: where a small hotel's scent decision is actually made
◆ ◆ ◆
What we specify
"Small property wanting to be remembered by guests who stayed three nights."
One register, one level, held unchanged for years. Consistency is the whole mechanism
Arrival
What we answer
"Owner asks whether guests should notice the scent on entry."
No. Noticeable on arrival is too high by the second day, because noses adapt
Level
What we specify
"Lobby opening directly onto the breakfast room."
Timer off through service, or no lobby machine at all if the two share air
Food
What we answer
"Owner wants a scent nobody else in Jaipur uses."
Distinctive ages badly in a hotel. A quiet ordinary register survives a decade
Register
What we answer
"Guests asking at checkout what the hotel smells of."
Answer honestly and let them buy the same fragrance. Do not invent a bespoke story
Guest ask
What we specify
"Corridors and guest rooms proposed for machines."
Rooms take reeds, not machines. Corridors usually take nothing at all

Founder Diaries · SOSA Commercial Scenting Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
Yes, and it is the standard way this is done properly. The interesting part is that the intensity map runs opposite to how most owners would rank the rooms.
Quick answers — read this first
Can one scent run at different intensities across a hotel? Yes, and it is the recommended approach. One register keeps the property coherent while levels are matched to how long guests stay in each space.

What does the intensity map look like? Highest in the enclosed lobby where dwell is two minutes, lower in a lounge or bar where guests sit for an hour, lowest in guest rooms, and zero in corridors and open areas.

Why does it run opposite to importance? Because the nose adapts in about fifteen minutes, so long-dwell spaces need less rather than more. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the lobby and reeds from ₹749 in rooms deliver that spread.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. One register, four intensities, ranked by dwell time - and dwell runs opposite to how owners rank rooms.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for an enclosed lobby up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, SOSA reed diffusers from ₹749 for guest rooms, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with lobby dimensions and ceiling height, whether the entrance is open, where breakfast is served, and how many enclosed public rooms you have - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How should one core scent be delivered at different intensities across the guest journey?
Through an intensity map built on dwell time, using one register and different delivery methods. The map, in order: the enclosed lobby carries the highest of the scented levels, because a guest crosses it in two minutes with a fresh nose and experiences it fully. An enclosed lounge, bar or library sits lower, because guests sit there for an hour or more and adapt within the first quarter of it, so a level that felt correct on entry becomes a level nobody perceives while the machine keeps delivering it. Guest rooms sit lowest, at reed level rather than machine level, because they are occupied for eight to ten hours including sleep. Corridors, arcades and courtyards sit at zero. What surprises owners is that this ranking is the inverse of importance - the instinct is to give the best suite the strongest presence, and that is precisely backwards, because the best suite is where somebody spends the longest time. Holding one register across four levels also imposes a constraint on the original choice: the fragrance has to work as a faint background in a busy lobby at noon and as a barely-there presence in a bedroom at three in the morning, which rules out anything with a strong single character and points toward dry, structural registers that thin out gracefully. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for the lobby and a second, set lower, for a lounge that qualifies; reed diffusers from ₹749 in rooms; all on the same Hotel Collection register from ₹299. SOSA makes no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend and is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: rank the rooms by how long people stay, then invert your instinct.
Two levels of the same register: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for the lobby, reeds from ₹749 for the rooms. Fragrance from ₹299.

The intensity map

The map is simple once you stop ranking rooms by how much you like them.

Why this works
Building the intensity map
1 List every space by how long a guest typically stays in it 2 Set the shortest-dwell enclosed space highest, still low in absolute terms 3 Step down through lounge and bar to reed level in guest rooms 4 Set corridors, arcades and courtyards to zero and write that down
The machine most independent Jaipur hotels use in the lobby: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot creep. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Dwell, not status
The best room needs the least
Adaptation means that after roughly fifteen minutes a person stops perceiving a constant scent while the delivery continues unchanged. A guest in a suite for ten hours therefore receives far more total exposure than a guest crossing a lobby twenty times, which is why the suite is the lowest setting in the building. Ranking by how much you value a room produces a map that is wrong in every position.
Tip: Rank by hours, not by room rate.
02
What one register has to survive
Noon lobby and three in the morning
A single register must be pleasant as a background in a busy lobby and unobtrusive in a bedroom overnight, which is a wide brief. Dry, structural registers built on wood, tea or clean citrus thin out gracefully at low levels, whereas heavy florals and gourmands either disappear entirely or remain conspicuous, with very little useful range in between. The intensity map is therefore also an argument for restraint in the original choice.
03
Zero is a setting
The unscented spaces do work
A guest who experiences faint scent in the lobby, nothing crossing a courtyard, and something faint again in a lounge is experiencing a building. A guest who experiences the same level everywhere is experiencing a system, and the difference between those two impressions is entirely made up of the spaces you deliberately left alone. Write the zeroes into the plan with as much conviction as the settings.
Tip: Write the zeroes down. They are half the specification.
The SOSA principle
The longer somebody stays in a room, the less fragrance it needs, which is the opposite of everybody's first instinct.
Adaptation is the reason, and it is about fifteen minutes.
SOSA Hotel Collection diffuser fragrance

Holding one register at four levels

One more consequence: because the same register runs everywhere, changing it means changing four things at once, which is a further reason to choose something durable at the outset.

The SOSA scent edit
The intensity map
Scent Why it suits the mood
Enclosed lobby Highest of the scented levels - two-minute dwell, fresh noses
Lounge, bar, library Lower - guests sit for an hour and adapt in the first fifteen minutes
Guest rooms Lowest, reeds not machines - eight to ten hours including sleep
Corridors and open areas Zero, written into the plan as a specification

Whether the register should be identical across areas is in the same fragrance chapter, the lobby-versus-corridor version for heritage properties is in the lobby level chapter, and the long-dwell principle applied to jewellery rooms is in the consultation room chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for hotels: fragrance is an ambience decision only and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A hotel is a crowd environment with guests who stay for days, so restrained registers and low, locked levels are recommended; guest rooms should have an unscented option available on request, and any area sharing air with food service should be left unscented or switched off through service. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal

The thing that makes a small hotel memorable is not an unusual fragrance. It is that the place smelled the same on Tuesday morning as it did when the guest walked in on Sunday night - and the same again two years later when they came back. Consistency is the entire mechanism, and it is available to a twelve-room property on exactly the same terms as a chain.

Which is why almost all of my advice to boutique owners is about restraint and locking. Set the level from the doorway, not from the desk you have been sitting at for an hour, because your nose has already adapted and theirs has not. Then lock it. The commonest failure I see is not a bad choice of scent; it is a machine that drifted upward over eight months because somebody kept nudging it.

The limits I hold to. Fragrance is an ambience decision, never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you want a lobby sized properly, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Can one scent run at different intensities across a hotel?
Yes, and it is the recommended specification. One register keeps the property coherent while levels follow how long guests stay in each space.
What is the correct intensity order?
Enclosed lobby highest, lounge or bar lower, guest rooms lowest at reed level, and corridors and open areas at zero.
Why do long-stay rooms get less?
Because the nose adapts within about fifteen minutes while delivery continues, so total exposure in a ten-hour room is far greater than in a lobby crossed twenty times.
Does this constrain the fragrance choice?
Yes. The register has to work as a faint lobby background and in a bedroom overnight, which favours dry structural registers that thin out gracefully.
Should unscented spaces be planned deliberately?
Yes, and written down. The gaps are what stop a property smelling like a system. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
