Founder Diaries · SOSA Commercial Scenting Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
A modular kitchen centre has two odour problems rather than one, and the second is the one that catches people out: the working sink.
Quick answers — read this first
Do laminate and veneer samples cause an odour problem? They can. A sample library is a concentrated collection of freshly cut engineered board, adhesive and finish, frequently stored closed in a rack, and it continues releasing for a long time in a warm room.

What is the second problem in a kitchen showroom? Display sinks and any working plumbing. A trap that dries out because the tap is rarely run will vent drain air into the showroom, and that is mistaken for a materials smell surprisingly often.

Should a kitchen experience centre be scented? Only after both of those are resolved, and then lightly. Adding fragrance to a dry trap or a sample rack makes it worse and makes the attempt obvious.
The short answer
Short answer: Sample library off-gassing and a dry trap. Fix both before any fragrance.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained area on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, with the Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large display floor.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor area, ceiling height, number of floors, AC and fan use, and which materials dominate your displays - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How should a modular kitchen experience centre handle materials smells?
Deal with two separate problems, in this order, before considering fragrance at all. Problem one: the sample library. A rack of laminate, veneer, acrylic and edge-banding samples is a concentrated collection of freshly cut engineered board, adhesive and finish, and it is frequently stored in a closed unit. That is an unventilated box of the newest material in the building, and it continues releasing for far longer than a finished display does - especially in an Ahmedabad summer, because release rate rises with temperature. The fixes are cheap. Store samples in an open or ventilated rack rather than a closed cupboard. Keep the newest samples out of any enclosed drawer. Ventilate the sample area specifically, and if it sits in a corner with no air movement, that is the corner to address. And rotate stock, because the oldest samples have finished releasing and the newest have not. Problem two, and this is the one people miss: the sinks. A kitchen display with plumbed-in sinks that are almost never used will develop dry traps, and a dry trap vents drain air directly into the showroom. This is regularly mistaken for a materials smell, and no amount of ventilation or fragrance addresses it - the fix is to run every display tap for thirty seconds once a week, which costs nothing and should be on a cleaning rota. Check any dishwasher or appliance display on the same basis, because standing water in an unused machine produces its own smell in a hot month. Also worth checking: bins in display units. Showroom kitchens have integrated bins, and they are frequently used as actual bins by staff. Now fragrance, if the two above are resolved. A modular kitchen floor is largely hard surfaces - stone, laminate, metal, glass - which means it has less of its own legitimate material smell than a solid timber furniture floor does, so there is more room here for something added than there is in a wood and leather showroom. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299, low and key-locked, or an Aangan at ₹25,999 if the floor is genuinely large. One register caution specific to kitchens. Avoid anything food-adjacent - vanilla, coffee, citrus-sweet, spice. In a room full of display kitchens, a food note reads as somebody having cooked in the showroom, which is not the impression a customer wants while imagining their own kitchen. SOSA does not recommend scenting staff work areas or workshops. Somebody on a nine-hour shift cannot leave a scent they dislike, and nobody there chose it. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: run every display tap weekly, then ventilate the sample rack.
After the traps and the sample rack: ₹11,999, low. Fragrance from ₹299, and nothing food-adjacent.

Two problems a kitchen centre has

The sample library is the obvious suspect and the sinks are the usual culprit.

Why this works
In order
1 Run every display tap for thirty seconds weekly - dry traps vent drain air 2 Check appliance displays for standing water, and integrated bins for actual rubbish 3 Store samples in a ventilated rack, not a closed cupboard, and rotate stock 4 Then, if needed, a low fragrance - and nothing food-adjacent
Display floors are sized on air volume: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained area, Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large floor, Meenar at ₹38,500 for very large premises. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
The dry trap
Mistaken for a materials smell
A plumbed display sink nobody uses develops a dry trap that vents drain air into the room. No fragrance or ventilation addresses it, and it is regularly blamed on the laminates. Thirty seconds of running water weekly is the whole fix.
Tip: It is not the laminate. It is the trap.
02
A closed sample rack
An unventilated box of new board
A cupboard of freshly cut laminate, veneer and edge-banding releases for far longer than a finished display, and release rises with temperature. Open or ventilated storage, newest samples out of drawers, and rotate stock.
Tip: Do not keep the newest material in a closed cupboard.
03
No food notes
In a room full of kitchens
Vanilla, coffee, sweet citrus and spice read as somebody having cooked in the showroom. That is the wrong impression while a customer imagines their own kitchen, and it is a specific register constraint in this category.
Tip: A kitchen showroom must not smell of cooking.
The SOSA principle
Everybody blames the laminates. It is usually a trap that dried out because nobody runs the tap.
Thirty seconds a week, at no cost.

Where fragrance fits, if anywhere

Hard-surface floors have less legitimate material smell to protect than timber ones, so there is genuinely more room here - but keep it dry and non-food, and low.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar
Option Right for What it actually is Price
Reed diffusers One small room, no power point, no maintenance Alcohol-free reed oil, passive, silent. Good for a single cabin or a small front desk, not for a hall from ₹749
Boond / Sukoon ultrasonic A desk, a single cabin, a small reception Water-based cool mist; runs on Hotel Collection fragrance, adds a little humidity to the room ₹899 / ₹1,899
Megh ultrasonic (6L) A larger waiting area where visible mist is wanted 6L tank, water-based. Still a room machine rather than a floor machine ₹3,499
SOSA Vaayu Reception, lounge, corridor, a contained showroom floor Waterless cold-air, up to 1000m³ (about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank, app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38 dB, key-lock for public areas ₹11,999
SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes for materials-led showrooms: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Wood, leather and textiles carry their own scent, which customers use when assessing material quality, so display areas and sample libraries are generally specified as unscented and contained consultation rooms are scented instead. New-furniture off-gassing from adhesives, finishes and engineered board is resolved by ventilation and time rather than by fragrance. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it feels - and is not a commercial performance claim. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

Furniture and interiors is the one retail category where the merchandise is already the fragrance, and customers are using it as evidence. Real wood, real leather, natural fibres - people smell the difference between those and their cheaper equivalents, whether or not they could tell you they are doing it. That is an advantage you have already paid for in your buying, and covering it with an ambient scent throws it away.

So my advice for an Ahmedabad furniture or modular kitchen showroom is almost always the same: leave the display floor to the materials and scent the rooms where people sit and decide. A consultation area, a design lounge, a reception - contained spaces, away from the bulk of the stock, where a low dry woody register sits alongside the material character instead of arguing with it.

And the new-stock problem, which every showroom in this category has: furniture off-gasses for weeks from adhesives, finishes and boards, and in a sealed hard-air-conditioned Ahmedabad showroom it accumulates. That is ventilation, not fragrance - and fragrance over it is masking, which customers evaluating material quality are exactly the people who notice. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Do laminate and veneer samples cause odour?
They can. A closed sample rack is an unventilated box of freshly cut board and adhesive, and release rises with temperature.
What is the problem people miss?
Display sinks. A trap that dries out because the tap is never run vents drain air into the showroom.
How do we fix that?
Run every display tap for thirty seconds once a week, on the cleaning rota. It costs nothing.
Can we scent a kitchen showroom?
Once both problems are resolved, yes, lightly. Hard surfaces have less legitimate material smell to protect.
Which registers should we avoid?
Anything food-adjacent. In a room full of kitchens it reads as somebody having cooked there.
