Founder Diaries · Diwali Budget · ₹15,000 total
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
At ₹5,000 the question is which format your list can afford. At ₹10,000 it is how to tier. ₹15,000 is the first total where a genuinely different object comes into range for the top of the list — the two-bottle duo — and where you can put it there without anybody further down losing their gift. That is the only reason this budget deserves its own page. What follows is the exact point at which the duo flips from impossible to affordable to sensible, worked out on a fourteen-name list, and the reason I would stop at three of them when the money would happily stretch to six.
Quick answers — read this first
The baseline: a fourteen-name list at our reed floor is 14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486. On ₹15,000 that leaves ₹4,514 of headroom, and headroom is the number that actually decides this budget.

What a duo really costs: a Day & Night duo is ₹1,498, which is exactly 2 × ₹749. Upgrading one name from a single bottle to a duo therefore costs ₹749 — the price of another name. Every duo subtracts one person from the list.

The flip point: the first duo becomes affordable at ₹10,486 + ₹749 = ₹11,235. Three fit at ₹10,486 + 3 × ₹749 = ₹12,733. Six fit at ₹14,980, and six is where the plan stops improving.

The plan I would actually run: 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 = ₹4,494 + ₹8,239 = ₹12,733, plus five spare jar candles at 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895. Total ₹14,628, fourteen names covered, five gifts still on the shelf for whoever arrives unannounced.
The short answer
Short answer: cover the whole list at the floor first — 14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486 — then spend the ₹4,514 of headroom deliberately rather than by drifting upward at the checkout. Three duos is the allocation I would defend: 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 = ₹12,733, with the remaining ₹2,267 going to spare gifts rather than to further upgrades. Six duos also fits at ₹14,980 and I would not buy it, for the reason in Part Three.
How the product works: a reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it — the oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length. No flame, no socket, no switch. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks. A duo is two 50ml bottles in two scents, and its point is two rooms, not a bigger gesture: output per bottle is fixed, so the only way to raise the fragrance in a home is another source, never a grander one.
Straight answer
I have ₹15,000 for Diwali gifting — what is the complete plan?
1. Cover the entire list at the floor before you upgrade anybody. 14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486. Do this on paper first. It is the only order of operations that prevents the commonest failure at this budget, which is spending generously on names one to four and discovering that names eleven to fourteen are now getting whatever is left.

2. Treat what remains as headroom, not as budget. ₹15,000 − ₹10,486 = ₹4,514. Headroom is a different kind of money: it cannot make anyone's gift meaningfully bigger, but it can change the shape of two or three gifts at the top.

3. Know exactly what a duo costs you. A Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is 2 × ₹749 to the rupee. So a duo is not a premium product with a margin attached — it is two bottles going into one home instead of two homes. The cost of each duo is one name.

4. The first duo becomes affordable at ₹11,235. That is ₹10,486 + ₹749. Below that total, on a fourteen-name list, a duo can only be bought by removing somebody. This is the number that makes ₹15,000 a different budget rather than a bigger one.

5. Three duos is the allocation I would defend. 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 = ₹4,494 + ₹8,239 = ₹12,733. Fourteen names covered, three households treated to two rooms, and ₹2,267 still in hand.

6. Spend the last ₹2,267 on spares, not on upgrades. 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 in jar candles keeps five gifts on a shelf for the people who arrive without warning. Total ₹14,628. A spare gift you never hand over is a candle you keep; an upgrade nobody asked for is money gone.

7. Six duos also fits, at 6 × ₹1,498 + 8 × ₹749 = ₹14,980, and I would not buy it. Past three, the extra duos stop landing anywhere useful, because most lists do not contain six households with two separate rooms worth scenting. Part Three sets out why.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: 14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486 covers the list; ₹15,000 leaves ₹4,514 of headroom. A duo at ₹1,498 is exactly two singles, so each one costs a name: the first fits at ₹11,235, three fit at ₹12,733, six at ₹14,980. Buy three, then put ₹1,895 into five spare candles rather than upgrading anyone else.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo, two 50ml bottles at ₹1,498
The object that ₹15,000 puts in range
SOSA Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness and Evening Calm ₹1,498 / 2 × 50ml
Two 50ml bottles, two scents, one household. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus; Evening Calm is Kashmir lavender and chamomile, the softest thing we make. The reason to give both to one home is not generosity, it is geography: output per bottle is fixed, so a second bottle in a second room is the only way to raise the fragrance in a flat. Bright at the kitchen or bathroom end, soft at the bedroom end. What it is not is a stronger gift — put both in one room and you get two compositions colliding in the same air, which is worse than either alone. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds each, 6–8 weeks per bottle. In 2 × 130ml it is ₹2,498.

Part one — headroom, and what a duo actually costs

The thing that changes between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000 is not how good the gifts can be. It is that a surplus appears above the floor, and a surplus behaves differently from a budget. A budget has to cover everybody; a surplus only has to be spent well on somebody. Most people spend it badly, and they spend it badly in a specific and predictable order, which is what these three cards are about.

1
THE FIRST MOVE · FLOOR FIRST
Cover all fourteen at ₹749 before you upgrade one person
14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486. Write that down before you open a store. The order of operations is the whole discipline at this budget, because a list bought in the order the names occur to you spends generously at the start and apologetically at the end — and the names that occur to you last are almost never the names that deserve least. Covering the floor first also tells you immediately whether ₹15,000 is a comfortable total or a tight one for your particular list. At fourteen names it is comfortable. At twenty-two names it is not: 22 × ₹749 = ₹16,478, which is already ₹1,478 past your total before a single upgrade.
The rule: nobody gets a second bottle until everybody has a first one.
2
THE ARITHMETIC · THE DUO IS NOT A PREMIUM
₹1,498 is 2 × ₹749 exactly, so a duo costs one name
SOSA Fresh and Grounded reed diffuser duo at ₹1,548Fresh & Grounded₹1,548 · 2 × 50mlPeople assume a duo carries a premium for being a pairing. It does not: Day & Night at ₹1,498 is two ₹749 bottles, Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 is a ₹749 and an ₹849 wearing one label, and Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 is ₹799 plus ₹849. Which means the real cost of every duo, on a fixed total, is one more name you cannot cover. That is a clean trade and worth making three times. It is not worth making six times, because the second bottle only earns its place where there is a second room to put it in — two bottles standing a metre apart is two compositions in one volume of air, and the result is a seam rather than a stronger room.
The trade: one duo = one name. Ask whether that household has a second room before you spend the name.
3
THE MISTAKE · UPGRADING THE MIDDLE
Headroom spread thinly across the list disappears without trace
The tempting alternative use of ₹4,514 is to lift everybody: fourteen names from ₹749 to ₹1,049 each, say. Two problems. The first is that we do not sell anything at ₹1,049 — the next real step up is a 130ml at ₹1,249, and 14 × ₹1,249 = ₹17,486, comfortably past your total. The second is more interesting: a 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, but at six reeds it puts the same fragrance into the room. Size buys duration, not reach. So spreading headroom across the list buys fourteen people a longer January and changes nothing about what any of them experiences in the fortnight after Diwali. Concentrating it into three duos changes the shape of three gifts. On a fixed total I would take the second every time.

Part two — the exact point the duo flips

Here is the fourteen-name list held constant while the total moves, so you can see precisely where the duo becomes possible, where it becomes sensible and where it stops paying. No competing category is priced anywhere on this page; this is one product line against itself.

The duo flip, on a fourteen-name list
What each total leaves above the floor, and how many duos that buys
Total available Headroom above 14 × ₹749 = ₹10,486 Duos it buys The basket Verdict
₹12,733 ★ ₹2,247 — exactly 3 × ₹749 Three 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 The point the duo becomes sensible. Nobody is dropped
₹10,486 Nothing None 14 × ₹749 The floor. Everyone covered, no shape to the list
₹11,235 ₹749 — exactly one name One 1 × ₹1,498 + 13 × ₹749 = ₹11,235 The first duo becomes affordable without removing anybody
₹14,628 ₹4,142 after three duos Three, plus five spares 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 + 5 × ₹379 The plan I would run on ₹15,000. ₹372 left over
₹14,733 ₹4,247 after three duos Three, plus four 130ml upgrades 3 × ₹1,498 + 4 × ₹1,249 + 7 × ₹749 Defensible, but the upgrade buys duration nobody asked for
₹14,980 ₹4,494 — exactly 6 × ₹749 Six 6 × ₹1,498 + 8 × ₹749 The maximum. Six households with two rooms is a rare list
The honest caveat: every figure here assumes the least expensive bottle at ₹749 and the least expensive duo at ₹1,498. If your top tier wants Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598, three of those is ₹4,794 rather than ₹4,494 and the whole plan moves ₹300. And if any name on your list is a person who works for you, none of this applies to them: cash is flexible, it is what most people in that position would choose, and an object is a courtesy alongside it rather than a replacement for it.

The three duos, and what each pairing is actually for
The SOSA principle
A second bottle is not a bigger gift. It is a second room, and if the household does not have one, you have bought a name's worth of nothing.
Which is why headroom at ₹15,000 should go to three households you can picture, and then stop — rather than to six you are guessing about.

Part three — why I stop at three duos

Six duos fits. 6 × ₹1,498 + 8 × ₹749 = ₹14,980, and you would still cover all fourteen names. I would not do it, and the reason is not restraint for its own sake. A duo only earns its second bottle where there are two spaces that do not share air. A 2BHK with a hall, a 3BHK, a home where the bedroom is genuinely down a corridor from the sitting room — those are duo homes. A single-room flat, a studio, a small 1BHK where the kitchen opens into the living area: those are not, and a second bottle there stands a few feet from the first, putting two compositions into one volume of air. The result is not twice the fragrance. It is a seam, which is a worse outcome than one bottle running cleanly, and it is entirely avoidable by spending that ₹749 on a fourteenth name instead.

The second reason is that you probably cannot verify six homes. A duo is a gift that depends on architecture you have seen. Most people can picture two or three of the flats on their list with any confidence; beyond that they are reasoning from a WhatsApp display picture. Where you cannot picture the room, a single 50ml is the honest instrument, because it asks nothing — no flame, no socket, no maintenance beyond a weekly flip, and it finishes in 6–8 weeks and leaves nothing behind to display or store. That "asks nothing" quality is exactly what you want when your information is thin, and it is why eleven singles and three duos is a more accurate plan than six and eight.

And there is a version of this reader for whom ₹15,000 is more than the occasion needs. Nine names, all courtesy, none close: 9 × ₹799 = ₹7,191 and you have ₹7,809 you did not need to spend. I would rather say that than let a round number in someone's head drive the purchase, because the reader who overspends this October is the reader who resents the whole exercise by the third year. The related trap is the one that sets an expectation: a duo given once becomes the baseline for next year, and Diwali is annual. Give the gift you would be content to repeat, and note that a duo repeated in a household that only has one usable room becomes an accumulation rather than a gift.

Headroom is not permission to spend. It is permission to change the shape of two or three gifts, and no more than that.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — which duo, for which household

If three duos are going out, they should not all be the same one. Pairings matter, because two scents in one home have to meet somewhere or the flat develops a seam between them. Here is which duo suits which household shape, and where a single bottle is the better answer despite the headroom.

Duo selection
Six household shapes, and what I would send each one
The household Duo or single What I would send Cost Why, and the caveat
A 2BHK you have visited ★ Duo Day & Night ₹1,498 Bright at the kitchen end, soft at the bedroom end. The clearest split in the range
A home where somebody rejects floral scents Duo Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 Lemon-mint and pine-cedar meet on green eucalyptus, so they do not fight across a corridor
Parents, a formal sitting room and a hall Duo Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 Coffee-vanilla and rose-jasmine meet on warmth and soft musk. The warmest pairing we make
A one-room flat or a small 1BHK Single Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 Two bottles in one volume of air is a seam, not a stronger room. Softest thing we make
A home you have never seen Single Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 The least divisive scent for a blind name. Spend the saved ₹749 on another name instead
A household of more than about 300 sq ft of connected open space Neither Sukoon ₹1,899 Past that volume reeds are the wrong tool. Honest, and it costs you two names — decide accordingly
Honest notes for buyers: every total on this page is arithmetic on our listed prices and nothing else — no figure is a quotation and no term of any kind is offered. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and the least expensive duo is ₹1,498, which is exactly two of those bottles; there is no reed diffuser below ₹749 in any size. Replacement reeds are not sold separately, so a duo cannot be topped up with fresh reeds later — our guidance is to refresh them every few months. SOSA publishes nothing at all for larger orders and I can promise no delivery timing anywhere on this page — for a long list, ask through the contact page before committing. Free shipping starts at ₹499. Fragrance oil is flammable: where a bottle goes into a home in which diyas will be lit, keep it well away from any open flame, and never leave a burning candle unattended. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuser 50ml at ₹849, a single-bottle gift for a one-room home
The eleven names who get one bottle
SOSA Fresh Brew · Coorg coffee & Kerala vanilla ₹849 / 50ml
Eleven single bottles is the larger half of this plan — 11 × ₹749 = ₹8,239 at the floor, or ₹9,339 if all eleven are Fresh Brew at ₹849. Coffee and vanilla sit at 9.5 on our own internal strength scale at six reeds, the highest position in the range, which is our scale rather than an industry measure and describes presence rather than quality. It is the one scent here I would not send blind: warm coffee is genuinely polarising and a household that dislikes it will dislike it immediately. Send it to the names whose kitchens you have sat in. For everyone else on the eleven, Garden Bloom at ₹799 or Morning Freshness at ₹749 carries wider agreement.

A note from Sonal

We priced the duos as two bottles because that is what they are. There was a conversation early on about whether a pairing should carry a small premium — it is a nicer thing to receive, it photographs better, people expect to pay for a pairing. I could not construct an honest argument for it. Two bottles of oil, twelve reeds, two vessels; the label is not the thing anyone should be paying for.

The consequence is the arithmetic on this page, and I like it, because it makes the decision legible. When a duo is exactly two singles, nobody can pretend it is a status upgrade — it is visibly a choice about rooms, and the buyer can see that the price of it is a name. Several people a year work that out on their own and write to tell me they have decided against the duo. That is the system functioning.

What I will not do is tell you that three duos will be received better than fourteen single bottles. I have no way of knowing, and neither does anyone else. What I can give you is the price of every component, the point where the plan flips, and a plain statement of what our store does not have. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can I gift with ₹15,000?
Twenty at the floor: 20 × ₹749 = ₹14,980. Fourteen with room to change the shape of three gifts: 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 = ₹12,733. Twenty-two is past it — 22 × ₹749 = ₹16,478. Cover the whole list at ₹749 first, then decide what to do with what is left, rather than the other way round.
Is a duo better value than two single bottles?
It is exactly the same value. Day & Night at ₹1,498 is 2 × ₹749; Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 is ₹749 + ₹849; Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 is ₹799 + ₹849. Pairing two scents under one label does not change the price of either, so the only reason to choose a duo is that the two are meant to sit in one home in two different rooms.
Should I buy 130ml bottles instead of duos with the extra money?
Rarely. A 130ml at ₹1,249 lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, but at six reeds it projects the same into the room — size buys duration, not reach. So an upgrade across the middle of the list buys people a longer January and changes nothing about the fortnight after Diwali. Three duos changes the shape of three gifts; ₹500 more on eight names changes almost nothing you could point at.
What should I do with the leftover after three duos?
Buy spares. 3 × ₹1,498 + 11 × ₹749 = ₹12,733 leaves ₹2,267 on a ₹15,000 total, and 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 of that in jar candles gives you five gifts on a shelf for people who arrive unannounced. Total ₹14,628. Anything unused is a candle you keep, which is a better failure mode than an upgrade nobody registered.
Is a duo the right gift for a small flat?
No. Two bottles need two spaces that do not share air; in a studio or a compact 1BHK they end up a few feet apart and the two compositions collide, which reads as a seam rather than as more fragrance. A single Evening Calm 50ml at ₹799 is the better gift there, and the ₹749 you did not spend covers another name on the list.
