When a diffuser does not project well, the reasons are almost always mechanical: too few reeds, tired or low oil, a draughty spot that pulls scent out, or a bottle undersized for the room. Nothing mysterious. Let me walk through each cause in the order I would check it, so you can get your scent to actually fill the space.
Quick answers — read this first
Too few reeds. Each reed is a wick. Two or three reeds throw softly. Going to five or six lifts projection quickly - this is the most common fix.

Tired or low oil. Old oil, or a nearly empty bottle, projects poorly even with full reeds. A fresh refill often solves it instantly.

A draughty spot. A fan or window near the diffuser pulls scent straight out before it can build. Move it somewhere still.
The short answer
First check: reed count. Go from 2-3 reeds to 5-6 for a noticeable lift in projection.
Then: the oil - refresh tired or low oil, since it projects poorly even with a full reed set.
Then: placement - move it off the draught so scent builds instead of being pulled out.
Honest note: in a bigger room, an undersized bottle simply cannot project far. Match the size to the space.
Scent throw by reed count (illustrative, not clinical)Full reed set — strong throw, fastest use4 reeds — balanced, everyday level2–3 reeds — subtle, longest-lasting
Illustrative only. More reeds means a stronger scent throw and faster oil use; fewer reeds is subtler and lasts longer. You control the strength by how many reeds you use - start low and add more if needed.
Straight answer
Why doesn't my diffuser project well?
A diffuser projects poorly for four mechanical reasons: too few reeds, tired or low oil, a draughty spot that pulls scent away, or a bottle undersized for the room. The fastest fix is reed count - go from two or three reeds to five or six. If the oil is old or the bottle nearly empty, refresh it. Move the diffuser off any draught from a fan or window so scent can build. And if the room is large, an undersized bottle will always feel faint - match the bottle to the space.
Reeds, oil, placement and bottle size - check them in that order.

Why projection drops

Projection - how far and how strongly a scent fills a room - is not magic. It is surface area, freshness and airflow. Here are the causes I check, top to bottom.

1. Too few reeds. Each reed is a wick that carries oil up to evaporate. Two or three reeds give a soft, close throw. Going to five or six increases the evaporating surface and lifts projection fast. This is the number-one cause.
2. Tired or low oil. Oil that has been open for weeks, or a nearly empty bottle, simply has less to give. Projection sags even with a full reed set. A fresh refill often fixes it on the spot.
3. A draughty spot. Counter-intuitively, too much airflow hurts projection in the room. A fan or window near the diffuser carries scent straight out before it can build up and spread. Stillness lets it fill the space.
4. Wrong bottle for the room. A 50ml is sized for a small bathroom. In a large or open space it will always feel faint, no matter how many reeds you add. Match the bottle to the room.
Myth: poor projection means the fragrance itself is weak. Usually not. It is far more often too few reeds, tired oil, or a draughty, oversized room - not the scent lacking strength.

How to lift projection

In order: add reeds first - jump to five or six and give it a day. Flip them so the saturated ends face up for an immediate lift. If the oil is old or low, refresh it. Then move the diffuser to a still spot, away from the fan and window, so scent can gather and spread instead of being pulled out.

On the product side, a slower coconut-derived base helps projection stay consistent over time rather than spiking then fading. SOSA Morning Freshness is composed bright, with lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, so it reads clearly across a bathroom when run with a full-ish set of reeds.

Two honest notes. Humidity slows evaporation, so a steamy bathroom reads a little softer - that is not a projection fault. And keep the diffuser out of direct shower spray, because water on the reeds displaces oil and kills the throw. A reed freshens and layers scent; it does not remove an odour, so if a smell persists behind the fragrance, clean and ventilate first.

Projection problem The fix
Only 2-3 reeds Go to 5-6 reeds
Old or low oil Fresh refill
Draughty spot Move to a still shelf
Room too big for bottle Step up to 130ml
Projection is reeds, freshness and stillness - not a mystery of the scent.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and when I came home to India I kept noticing the same thing on the shelves: lovely bottles, vague labels. Nobody would tell you what the carrier was, or name the notes.

So SOSA reed diffusers use a disclosed CCT coconut-derived carrier, are phthalate-free and IFRA-aligned, name their top, heart and base notes, and are tested in real Indian heat and humidity - not a mild lab climate. Flame-free, heatless, electricity-free, built from real materials.

I would rather you used this guide to buy well than to buy ours by reflex. If another brand discloses its carrier and names its materials, buy it happily. I just think you deserve to know what is scenting your home.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my reed diffuser project well?
Usually too few reeds, tired or low oil, a draughty spot, or a bottle too small for the room. Add reeds first, refresh old oil, move it somewhere still, and match the bottle size to the space.
How many reeds do I need for good projection?
Five or six reeds project noticeably better than two or three. Add them gradually, flip them so the wet ends face up, and give each change a day before judging.
Does a draught improve projection?
No, it hurts it. A fan or window near the diffuser pulls scent out before it can build in the room. A still spot lets fragrance gather and spread, which improves projection.
Will a bigger bottle project further?
In a large room, yes - a 50ml is sized for a small bathroom and will feel faint in an open space. Match the bottle to the room, and run enough reeds.
Which SOSA scent projects well in a bathroom?
Morning Freshness, at Rs 749. It is composed bright, with Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, so it reads clearly across a bathroom when run with a full-ish set of reeds.
