Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
You do not need a list of twenty things. You need one answer, and it depends on about three facts about her that you already know. So this page is written the way I would answer it if you messaged me: I ask what you know, and each answer sends you somewhere different. If none of them fits, the last section tells you how to just ask.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, from Rs 749
Morning Freshness reed diffuser · Malabar lemon and mint from ₹749 →
This page leads with a reed because most people answer the first question with a no. Morning Freshness, ₹749 for 50ml - Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative of the five, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in. The thing to send when you cannot name a scent she wears.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I send my girlfriend for no reason? It depends on one thing: can you name a fragrance she already wears? If yes, send an attar from ₹379. If no, send something for a space instead - car fragrance from ₹449 if she drives daily, or a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 for the room she actually works in.

How much should I spend if there is no occasion? Less than you would on a birthday. Somewhere between ₹379 and ₹1,000 is the range where a surprise stays light. Above that it starts to look like something is being marked, and the person opening it has to work out what.

What if I get the scent wrong? Then buy the small size, so being wrong costs ₹379 rather than ₹1,149. Or take yourself out of the decision: the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 gives her three characters to choose from, and the car Discovery Set at ₹699 to ₹799 does the same with three mini sprays.
The short answer
Short answer: Answer one question first: can you name a fragrance she already wears? If yes, send a 3ml attar from Rs 379. If no, buy for a place rather than a person - car fragrance from Rs 449 if she drives daily, or a 50ml reed diffuser from Rs 749 for the room she works in.
The pick: If you can name what she wears, a 3ml attar from ₹379. If you cannot, a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749.
Why: One of those two is right for almost everybody, and which one it is depends on information you already have rather than on a longer list.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
What should I send my girlfriend to surprise her on an ordinary day?
Start with what you know rather than with what is available. If you can finish the sentence "she usually wears something with...", buy something worn: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, alcohol-free and rolled on, or the 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 if you are confident. If you cannot finish that sentence, do not guess your way through it - buy for a place instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. That means car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 if she drives most days, in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price, or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 for the room she actually works in, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Keep it under about ₹1,000 whichever way you go, because a large parcel on a day with nothing attached to it quietly asks her to work out what it means. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
There is one fork in this whole decision: can you name a fragrance she already wears? Yes sends you to an attar. No sends you to a room or a car, and that is not a downgrade.
If the answer to the fork is no, this is where you land: a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 for the room she works in. It asks nothing of you except an address.
Reed diffusers from ₹749

Three questions, and where each answer takes you

Here are the three questions in the order I would ask them. Answer them honestly rather than optimistically - the whole point of working this way is that a confident guess about somebody's taste is the most expensive mistake available here.

1
Question one
Can you name a fragrance she already wears?
Not the brand on the dressing table - the character. Can you say she wears something floral, or something sweet, or something with oud in it? If yes, you have enough to buy something worn, and an attar at ₹379 to ₹399 for 3ml is the version I would send: alcohol-free oil, applied to the wrist and neck rather than sprayed, and small enough to arrive on a Tuesday without ceremony.

If you are reaching for a guess, stop here. A wrong worn fragrance is the one gift that sits unused in a drawer, and no amount spent fixes that. Take the no and go to question two, where the information you are missing does not matter.
Tip: If you are guessing, that is a no. Treat it as one and move on.
2
Question two
Where does she actually spend her day?
This is the question that rescues a no. Almost everybody has one space they occupy far more than they realise, and it is rarely the living room a gift gets aimed at.

If she drives forty minutes each way, that car is more of her waking life than any room in her flat - car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549, and the hanging format is the mild one while the spray is the stronger one at the same price. If she works from one room at home, that room takes a 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 rather than the 130ml, because a first diffuser in a small room should be the smaller bottle. Either way you are choosing for a place you can picture, using facts you definitely have.
3
Question three
Is her home already scented, and by her?
Worth checking before you send a reed. If she has already chosen a scent scheme for her flat, sending a different one is arguing with a decision she made rather than filling a gap, and that is a subtly worse gift than it looks.

If that is the case, go back to her car, or go to a room she has not scented - a desk, a work room, a bathroom. And if she has never scented anything and does not seem interested, the honest answer might be that fragrance is not the category for her on this particular Tuesday, which is a fine conclusion to reach. I would rather tell you that than sell you a bottle that sits in a cupboard.
Tip: If her home is already on a scheme she chose, buy for her car instead.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
The order I would work through it in
  1. Name a fragrance she wears. If you can, buy a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399.
  2. If you cannot, stop guessing and pick a place: her car, her desk, her work room.
  3. Car: Rs 449 to Rs 549, hanging for mild or spray for stronger, same price.
  4. Room: a 50ml reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849. Check her home is not scented already.
The SOSA principle
Nearly every bad fragrance gift comes from answering a question you did not actually have the information for. The fix is not more options - it is being willing to say no and buy for a place instead.
Buying for a room is not the consolation answer. It is often the more accurate one.

The specific bottle each answer points at

Here is what each answer points at, specifically. Yes, she wears something floral and bright: Adaa at ₹379, bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac. Yes, something warm and rich: Ameeri at ₹385, Taif rose with sandalwood and saffron. Yes, something heavier and evening-leaning: Mastani at ₹389, night jasmine with damask rose and oudh, or Nawaab at ₹399 if oud is definitely her thing. No, and she drives: Jasmine at ₹449 is the mildest place to start, or the Discovery Set at ₹699 to ₹799 so she picks. No, and she works from home: Morning Freshness at ₹749, Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative of the five reeds.

The SOSA gift edit
Each answer, and the bottle it points at
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
You can name what she wears · ₹379 to ₹699 Buy something worn. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 if you are fairly sure, the 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 if you are certain. This route fails when the confidence is borrowed from a single compliment you half remember - in that case you are on the next row, not this one.
You cannot, and she drives daily · ₹449 to ₹799 Buy for the car. Nine scents at ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price, or the three-mini Discovery Set at ₹699 to ₹799 to hand her the choice. It fails for somebody whose car sits in the building most of the week.
You cannot, and she works from home · ₹749 to ₹849 Buy for the room she is actually in. A 50ml reed diffuser, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in and nothing to switch off. It fails if her flat is already scented to a scheme she chose herself, where a new character competes rather than adds.
You genuinely have no idea · ₹1,055, or one message The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 hands the decision to her, three characters in one box. Or describe her on WhatsApp and get a single recommendation back. The Trio fails as a casual gesture - it looks like a present, which is more than an ordinary Tuesday sometimes wants.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

On size, send the smaller one. The 3ml attar at ₹379 is a real gift and reads as light; the 12ml at ₹1,149 reads as a proper present and starts asking the question you were trying to avoid on a day with nothing attached to it. Reeds work the same way - 50ml is the ordinary size and 130ml from ₹1,249 is the one you buy when somebody moves house. If you want the gift to feel more considered, put the effort into matching it to her actual day rather than into moving up a size.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What should I send my girlfriend for no reason at all?
If you can name a fragrance she already wears, send a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399. If you cannot, buy for a place instead: car fragrance at Rs 449 to Rs 549 if she drives daily, or a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 for the room she works in.
How much should I spend on a surprise with no occasion?
Between Rs 379 and about Rs 1,000. A small gift on an ordinary day reads as exactly what it is. A large one asks her to work out what is being marked, which is the opposite of what a casual surprise is for.
What if I do not know her taste in fragrance at all?
Then do not buy something worn. Buy for a space - her car or the room she works in - because a room has no opinion about scent and a person does. Alternatively the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 lets her pick between three characters.
Is it better to send something to her home or give it in person?
Both work. If you are sending it, the flat items travel best: a 3ml or 6ml attar, or a 50ml reed diffuser. Nothing in that list needs assembling, a socket or an app, which matters when you are not there to explain it.
Can I just ask SOSA what to send?
Yes, and this is the shortcut if the questions above did not land. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with whether you can name a scent she wears, whether she drives, whether her home is already scented and what you want to spend. You will get one recommendation back rather than a list.

Can you name what she wears? Then an attar from ₹379. If you cannot, buy for a place: car fragrance from ₹449 if she drives, a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 for the room she works in. Still unsure? Describe her on WhatsApp and you will get one recommendation instead of a catalogue.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
