Across cafés, restaurants and hotels one rule sorts every space, and it is about food rather than about the business.
Quick answers — read this first
Where can fragrance go in a food or hospitality business? Hotel lobbies and corridors, yes. Washrooms in any of them, yes. Dining areas and kitchens, never.

What should I gift someone opening a café or restaurant? A boxed reed duo at ₹1,548 for the washrooms, or something personal for the owner.

What should I gift someone opening a hotel? Something for the lobby: Megh at ₹3,499 or Vaayu at ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: Anywhere food is served is out. Lobbies are in. Washrooms are always in.
The pick: hotel lobbies yes, food areas never, washrooms always: Megh ₹3,499, reed duo ₹1,548.
For a workspace: tell us the room, its ceiling height and whether the doors stay open on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 - and we will say plainly if it should not be scented.
Career and opening gifts - by what is actually being startedA first job or a promotion - attar from ₹379, trio ₹1,055A travelling role - SOSA Safar ₹3,999, cordless and waterlessA first office or studio - reed diffuser ₹749, Megh ₹3,499A store, salon or hotel - Vaayu ₹11,999, sized by air volume
Career gifts and opening gifts look like one category and behave like two. A promotion is a gift to a person and belongs to the part of their life the job does not own. An opening is a gift to a space, which makes it a sizing question first and a taste question second - and in a few spaces, a clinic treatment room or anywhere food is served, the correct answer is not to scent it at all.
Straight answer
What fragrance gift suits somebody opening a café, restaurant or hotel?
One rule sorts all of it: is food served or prepared in that space? Where the answer is yes: nothing. SOSA does not recommend scenting dining areas or anywhere food is prepared or served. Smell is most of taste, so an added fragrance competes directly with the food rather than complementing it, and in a kitchen it can also mask something a cook has a practical reason to notice. This is a refusal rather than a preference, and it holds however good the product is. Dining rooms, counters, breakfast rooms, bar food service and kitchens. This is a refusal rather than a preference, and it applies at every price tier. Where the answer is no: it depends on the space. Hotel lobbies, receptions and corridors: yes, and expected. Hospitality is the one commercial category where scenting a public space is expected rather than imposed. A lobby, a corridor and a reception are passed through, and consistency across them is a large part of what makes a good hotel feel like one. Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a large connected area with refills from ₹1,049, Megh at ₹3,499 for a smaller reception with fragrance from ₹299, a reed duo at ₹1,548 for a corridor. Washrooms in any of these businesses: yes, always. There is one part of a food business where scenting is standard practice and entirely appropriate: the washrooms. They are enclosed, separated from the dining area, and nobody is eating in them. A reed diffuser there is a genuinely useful gift and the one place in a cafe or restaurant it belongs. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 per washroom, clean and green rather than sweet, and never coffee-scented near a kitchen. Guest rooms: carefully. Guest rooms are a different question from a lobby. Somebody sleeps in one for eight hours, and a proportion of guests are sensitive to fragrance, travelling unwell or simply want a neutral room. Any scenting there should be light, should be recorded so housekeeping can skip it, and an unscented room should be available on request without anybody having to explain why. Homestays and short lets: lighter still, because guests booked a house and nobody is on site to fix a scent somebody dislikes. When the answer is no everywhere. And the alternative that always works: buy for the owner rather than the premises. Somebody who has just opened a food business has spent months on every detail of it and bought nothing for themselves in that time, and they are about to stop sleeping properly for a year. A 3ml attar at ₹399, a reed duo at ₹1,498 for their home, a car perfume at ₹449 for a drive that now happens before sunrise or after midnight. Coverage follows air volume including ceiling height rather than floor area, and fragrance does not travel through a closed door. Lobbies with double-height ceilings, open frontages and heavy air conditioning all need more output than their floor area suggests, and an open or semi-open space cannot hold fragrance at any output. SOSA makes no therapeutic, medical or commercial claim for any fragrance. Nothing here suggests a scent affects reviews, bookings, dwell time, spend, appetite or any other outcome. Scenting a hospitality space is a commercial decision for the owner: sized to the volume, tested with guests and staff, and reviewed. A gift can start that conversation and cannot be the decision. One line: food served there means nothing. Lobbies and washrooms are the yes.
Always the right answer: the washrooms, ₹749 each.

One rule, three outcomes

One rule, and three places it lands.

01
Food served means no
At every price
Dining rooms, counters, breakfast rooms, bar food and kitchens. Smell is most of taste, so an added fragrance is an ingredient nobody ordered - a refusal rather than a preference, and one that does not change with budget.
Tip: Food served there means nothing, at any price.
02
Lobbies are the yes
And consistency is the point
Passed through rather than inhabited, and scent there is part of what a property offers. What registers is evenness across hours and spaces rather than strength, which makes scheduling the feature worth paying for.
03
Washrooms, always
The gift nobody gives
Enclosed, separate, nobody eating, and standard practice everywhere. A new owner has agonised over the dining room and spent four minutes on the washrooms, which makes this both useful and quietly flattering.
Tip: The washrooms got four minutes. That is the gap.
The SOSA principle
Is food served there?
That one question sorts every space in the building.

Yes, no, and the washroom exception

Where scenting is appropriate, clean and green directions avoid reading as food, which is the constraint that matters in these buildings.

The SOSA scent edit
Yes, no, always
Scent Why it suits the mood
Hotel lobby and corridors Megh ₹3,499 · Vaayu ₹11,999
Washrooms, any of them Reed diffuser ₹749 each
Dining, kitchen, bar food Never · it competes with the food
When nothing fits The owner · attar ₹399 · home duo ₹1,498

The SOSA career & opening range

Everything below is alcohol-free and handmade in India, and it is organised by what is being started rather than by price. For a person marking a career moment, the attar tier is the one that works: concentrated oil rather than an alcohol spray, worn close to the skin, which is why it suits an office in a way a projecting spray does not. For a commute that has just got longer, the 12ml car perfume comes in two forms at the same price, a hanging version with a mild throw and a spray with a stronger one. For a small office, a studio or a consulting room, reed diffusers need no plug, flame or water and run down over six to ten weeks. Ultrasonic diffusers need water and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance - that is not reed diffuser oil and the two are not interchangeable. SOSA Safar is the cordless waterless machine for cars and hotel rooms, and Vaayu is for a whole floor, a store or a hospitality space. Coverage follows air volume including ceiling height, so anything commercial is quoted room by room rather than by budget. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

There are two completely different gifts hiding in this category and people mix them up constantly. A new job or a promotion is a gift to a person, and the kind thing is to aim at the part of their life the job does not own: their home, their commute, the twenty minutes before anybody needs anything from them. A desk object or an engraved plaque points straight back at the office, which is not a treat.

An opening is a gift to a space, and that is a different discipline entirely. It is a sizing question before it is a taste question, because coverage follows the air volume of a room including its ceiling height, and fragrance does not travel through a closed door. A beautiful product in the wrong-sized room reads as a weak product when it is actually arithmetic.

And there is a third answer people do not expect from a fragrance house, which is no. We do not recommend scenting clinical treatment areas, dining areas, or anywhere food is prepared or served. A patient on an examination table cannot leave the room, and in a restaurant the kitchen is already the scent strategy - anything else competes with how the food tastes. When somebody asks me about a café, I tell them to scent the washrooms and buy the owner something for their own home. A part of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Commercial, clinical and compliance note: this guide makes no therapeutic, medical, psychological or performance claim for any fragrance. Nothing here suggests a scent improves focus, productivity, recovery, sleep, mood or health, or that it affects footfall, dwell time, conversion or any other business outcome. SOSA does not recommend scenting clinical treatment areas, dining areas or anywhere food is prepared or served, and in any healthcare, hospitality or shared workplace setting a fragrance-free option should be offered rather than requested, because people who cannot leave a room have no way to opt out. Scenting a commercial premises is a business decision for its owner, sized to the space and tested with the people who use it, and a gift can only be a starting point for that. References to the taxation of business gifts, including withholding on benefits or perquisites arising from business or profession and the general blocking of input tax credit on gifts under GST, are general information current at the time of writing and are not tax advice; thresholds and interpretations change and your own finance team decides. References to gifts involving public servants, and to the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices and medical council conduct regulations restricting gifts from pharmaceutical, medical device and allied healthcare companies to healthcare professionals, are general information and not legal advice; where those rules apply there may be no compliant version of a gift at all. The recipient organisation's own gift policy governs. Attars are concentrated oils worn directly on the skin, so anyone with sensitive skin should patch-test first. Car fragrance should be fitted so that it does not obstruct the driver's view, interfere with controls or airbag deployment areas, or become a loose object in the cabin. Fragrance products are not intended for young children and should be kept out of reach of children and pets. The SOSA Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent of, and not affiliated with, any hotel or fragrance brand. Prices, stock and availability change, and quantities for an opening need confirming before you commit to a date.
