Founder Diaries · Dhanteras & Festive Fragrance Giftin
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
Everybody knows what happens to a box of sweets or dry fruit, and almost nobody says it: a good share of them are handed straight on to somebody else, sometimes without being opened. The instinct behind the gift is right - people like giving something that gets consumed. The format is what fails. A consumable that is not food keeps the instinct and loses the pass-on.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
SOSA Day & Night reed duo · Morning Freshness and Evening Calm ₹1,498 →
The gift with a mithai tin's shape and none of its fate. The Day & Night reed duo at ₹1,498 - Morning Freshness lemon and mint for the daytime rooms, Evening Calm lavender and chamomile for the bedroom, two 50ml bottles running about 6 to 10 weeks each.
Quick answers — read this first
What can I give at Dhanteras instead of sweets or dry fruit? A non-food consumable. A reed diffuser from ₹749 runs about 6 to 10 weeks, a reed duo gift set is ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 and has the same box shape as a mithai tin, and an alcohol-free attar is from ₹379.

Why do sweet and dry fruit boxes get passed on so often? Because they arrive in volume, they are interchangeable with each other, and they have a clock on them. Nobody can eat eight boxes, one box looks much like the next, and passing one along costs the recipient nothing.

Does a fragrance gift avoid that? Largely, yes. A reed diffuser or an attar is opened, placed and used by the person who received it, and it is much harder to hand on because a scent chosen for one home does not read as a neutral token for the next.
The short answer
Short answer: Keep the instinct, change the format. People give sweets and dry fruit because a consumable does not have to earn shelf space - but food gifts arrive in volume, are interchangeable and get handed on. A non-food consumable solves the same problem: a reed diffuser from Rs 749 that runs about 6 to 10 weeks, a reed duo set from Rs 1,498, or an attar from Rs 379.
The pick: The SOSA Day & Night reed duo at ₹1,498 - Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile, two 50ml bottles in one box.
Why: It has the same handover shape as a box of sweets, it gets used up the way a consumable should, and it is the wrong shape to quietly pass along to the next house.
Choosing a Dhanteras fragrance gift - at a glanceWorn on a person - attar from ₹379, perfume from ₹599Lives in a home - reed diffuser from ₹749, duo set from ₹1,498Lives in a car - hanging or spray from ₹449, Safar ₹3,999A whole large home or a business - SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
The one question that settles most Dhanteras fragrance gifts: where will it live? A scent worn on a person is a taste decision and needs you to know them. A scent that lives in a room or a car is a placement decision and needs you to know their space - which is usually the easier thing to be sure of.
Straight answer
What can I gift for Dhanteras instead of sweets and dry fruits?
Give a consumable that is not edible. The reason sweets and dry fruit are given is sound - a consumable places no obligation on the recipient, because it disappears rather than needing a permanent home. The reason they get passed on is equally sound: they arrive five or eight at a time, they are interchangeable with one another, and they are perishable, so moving one along is the rational thing to do. A fragrance keeps the first property and loses the second. A SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml and ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130ml and runs for about 6 to 10 weeks before it is finished. A Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 pairs Morning Freshness with Evening Calm in one box, which is the same handover shape as a mithai tin. An attar from ₹379 is the small version of the same idea. None of it is perishable and none of it is generic enough to re-gift without thought. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The instinct behind a box of sweets is correct - a gift that gets used up asks nothing of the person who receives it. Only the edible part needs replacing.
Same box shape, different fate. The Day & Night reed duo at ₹1,498 is two 50ml diffusers - lemon and mint for the day, lavender and chamomile for the evening - each running about 6 to 10 weeks.
Day & Night duo ₹1,498

Why the mithai box moves on, and what makes a gift stop at the first house

Three things make a festive food gift move on to the next house, and it is worth naming them precisely, because a replacement gift only works if it fails all three tests. If your alternative shares any of these properties, it will travel too.

1
The first variable
Volume - one household, many boxes, one week
The arithmetic is unforgiving. A family that gives to thirty people usually receives from a comparable number, and most of what arrives in a festive week is edible. There is no household that can get through that, so the surplus moves - and because everyone is doing the same thing, some boxes visit three homes before anyone opens them.

A fragrance gift does not compete in that pile at all. One reed diffuser in a home is a full use case; a second one goes into a different room rather than into a queue. This is the plainest argument for changing category rather than changing the quality of the food you give - a better box of dry fruit is still entering a market with far more supply than demand.
Tip: Ask yourself how many of the same thing that household will receive this week.
2
The second variable
Interchangeability - the gift has to be traceable to you
The second reason the box moves on is that nothing about it is attached to the giver. Two boxes of the same kind of sweet are the same gift, so there is no cost to passing one along and no awkwardness if it is spotted later. That anonymity is exactly what makes it easy to give in bulk and exactly what makes it easy to forward.

A named scent breaks that. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla; Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night jasmine. Those are not interchangeable objects, and a scent that was chosen to suit one home is visibly the wrong neutral token for the next one. That single property is why a fragrance gift usually stops where it was given.
3
The third variable
When sweets are still the right answer - and when fragrance is not
Do not overcorrect. If you are giving to forty people you have never met, a food gift is genuinely more appropriate than a scent, because a scent implies a level of knowledge you do not have. The same applies to households that redistribute sweets deliberately as part of their own giving - for them the box is not waste, it is a supply. And if you are giving to a home with a young baby or an elderly relative who has said scent bothers them, the answer is neither: skip fragrance entirely.

The honest limit of this page is that fragrance solves the pass-on problem, not the knowledge problem. If you know nothing at all about the household, buy for the space rather than the person - a 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 - or move to car fragrance from ₹449, which sits in a space the recipient controls alone.
Tip: Forty near-strangers is a food-gift situation. Ten people you know is not.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to replace the sweet box without losing what it does well
  1. Keep the consumable logic: pick something that finishes, not something kept.
  2. Keep the box shape: a reed duo at Rs 1,498 hands over like a mithai tin.
  3. Break interchangeability: name the scent when you give it.
  4. Size it to the home: 50ml at Rs 749 for a flat, 130ml at Rs 1,249 for a large room.
The SOSA principle
A gift that gets used up is generous because it makes no demands. A gift that gets used up and cannot be quietly forwarded is generous and also honest about who it came from.
That second property is the entire difference between a mithai tin and a reed diffuser.

Non-food consumables, by where they get used

Non-food consumables sort themselves by where they get used, and that is the only sorting you need. In a room: five SOSA reed diffusers, each with a clearly different character - Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint at ₹749, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine at ₹799, Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile at ₹799, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar at ₹849 and Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at ₹849. On a person: the four attars from ₹379, alcohol-free and worn on the pulse points. In a car: nine scents from ₹449, each available as a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price. All three are finished and gone within a knowable period, which is what the sweet box was doing right.

The SOSA scent edit
The sweet box versus four non-food consumables
Scent Why it suits the mood
A reed duo gift set · ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 Two 50ml diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The closest replacement for a mithai tin in handover weight, and each bottle runs about 6 to 10 weeks.
A single reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349 One named scent for one room, nothing to plug in and nothing to switch off. The right pick when the gift is going to a household you know reasonably well and you can match the scent to an actual room. 50ml for a bedroom or small living room, 130ml for a large open living area.
An attar · ₹379 to ₹1,199 The small non-food gift, alcohol-free concentrated oil in 3ml, 6ml or 12ml. It is used on ordinary days rather than saved, which is the same virtue the food gift had. It does require some sense of the person's taste, so it is better for people you actually know than for a long list.
Car fragrance · from ₹449 Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price, with saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949 and a discovery set of three minis from ₹699. A consumable in a space nobody else shares, so it cannot be redistributed at all. Useless for a person who rarely drives.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

One practical note on sizing, because this is where a replacement gift most often goes wrong. A 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 is not the more generous version of a 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 - it is the version for a bigger room. In a compact flat the smaller bottle is the better gift and the larger one simply makes the whole home smell of one thing. If you want the gift to have more weight, add a second scent rather than a bigger bottle, which is exactly what the duo sets are for.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The box of sweets was never the mistake. The mistake was giving something so interchangeable that moving it along costs nobody anything.

The SOSA gifting range

There are only three questions worth asking before you spend anything. Will the gift be worn on a person, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to know what they already wear? Will it live in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser or a duo set is the safer buy? Or will it live in a car, where the choice is really between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray, and where SOSA Safar is the upgrade for somebody who genuinely spends hours driving? Answer that, then pick the price band.

The SOSA Dhanteras gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order

SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449

SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Every year around Dhanteras I get the same message, phrased twenty different ways: I have to buy something, I do not want to buy gold again, and I do not want to hand over a box of dry fruit that everybody quietly passes on. That is a real problem and it is worth taking seriously, because the difficulty is not the budget. It is that most festive gifts are bought for the moment of handing over and then have nowhere to go.

Fragrance is unusually good at this for one unglamorous reason: it gets used up. A reed diffuser sits on a console and does something for six to ten weeks. An attar lives in a handbag and gets worn on ordinary Tuesdays. A car perfume is noticed every single morning by somebody who did not ask for it. None of that is sentiment - it is just a product that has a job, unlike an object that has to earn shelf space for a decade.

Two honest cautions, though, because I would rather you bought well than bought more. A worn fragrance is a taste decision - if you do not know what the person already wears, a perfume is a guess, and a scent for their home or their car is the safer buy. And do not spend up a tier to look generous. A ₹379 attar chosen because it suits somebody is a better gift than a ₹3,999 machine bought for a person whose car is spotless and who never noticed a smell in it. Buy the thing that fits the life, not the thing that fits the occasion.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Dhanteras gift that is not sweets or dry fruit?
A non-food consumable. A SOSA reed diffuser is Rs 749 to Rs 849 in 50ml and runs about 6 to 10 weeks, a reed duo gift set is Rs 1,498 to Rs 1,598 and has the same handover shape as a mithai tin, and an alcohol-free attar starts at Rs 379 for 3ml.
Why do people pass on the sweets they receive?
Three reasons together: households receive many boxes in one week, the boxes are interchangeable so passing one along carries no cost, and they are perishable so there is a clock on them. Change any one of those and the gift is more likely to stay.
Is a reed diffuser too impersonal a gift?
It is less personal than a worn fragrance and more personal than a generic box, which is usually the right place to be. It suits a room rather than a personality, so you are matching a space you can observe instead of guessing at a taste you cannot.
What is the closest thing to a sweet box in shape and price?
The reed duo gift sets. Day and Night at Rs 1,498, Fresh and Grounded at Rs 1,548 and Warmth and Bloom at Rs 1,598 are two 50ml diffusers in one box, which hands over with similar weight and presence to a festive tin.
I have a long list of people I barely know. Should I still switch?
Probably not entirely. A scent implies you know something about the household, which you do not. For a long list of near-strangers a food gift is more appropriate, or move to something space-based like a 50ml reed diffuser from Rs 749. Talk it through on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
