SOSA commercial scenting
In a hospital the honest answer is often no - and where it is yes, it is the lobby and nothing beyond it
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Facility manager asks whether the wards and corridors can be scented to deal with a persistent odour."
No. A persistent odour is a ventilation, drainage or housekeeping finding and belongs to that team
Not a fragrance job
What we specify
"Main entrance lobby, double height, doors opening onto a busy road all day."
This is the one zone usually worth discussing, and only after infection control has signed off
Lobby only
What we specify
"Day-care surgery centre wants reception to feel less institutional."
Reception can be considered as a separate air volume; clinical areas stay out entirely
Day-care surgery
What we answer
"Hospital asks whether scenting can reduce infection risk or improve air quality."
It cannot, and we will not say that it does. No health or air-quality claim is made for any product
No claims
What we specify
"VIP lounge on a separate floor with its own AC and closed doors."
A genuinely separate volume, so it can run its own low setting without affecting anything else
VIP lounge
What we answer
"HVAC is shared across clinical and non-clinical zones through common returns."
Then the honest recommendation is not to scent at all until the zoning is separated

Both of these have free fixes, and a fragrance machine is not among them. Sanitiser is a placement problem and footfall is an air-change problem, and a supplier who sells you a machine for either has sold you the wrong thing.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I deal with sanitiser smell at a hospital reception? Move the dispensers. Alcohol evaporates fastest right where it is used, so a bank of dispensers on or beside the desk puts the smell exactly where staff and visitors are standing. Relocate them to the entrance line with airflow moving away from the desk, and cap the number in any one spot.

What causes the stale smell at a busy reception? Air change failing to keep up with occupancy. A reception designed for forty people holding a hundred and twenty at visiting hours will smell of a hundred and twenty people regardless of any fragrance, and the fix is ventilation rate, door management and seating density.

Will a scent machine fix either problem? No. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Added to a stale, crowded reception it produces a stale, crowded, scented reception, which visitors read accurately.
The short answer
Short answer: Move the dispensers and fix the air change. Sanitiser is a placement problem, footfall is a ventilation problem, and neither is a fragrance problem.
The pick: nothing, in most of the building. Where a non-clinical public lobby is genuinely separate air and infection control agrees, the machine for that one zone is the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your lobby dimensions, ceiling height, HVAC type and what your infection-control policy already says - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How should a hospital reception handle the smell of sanitiser and heavy footfall?
By treating them as the two separate engineering problems they are. Sanitiser first, because the fix is free. Alcohol gel evaporates fastest in the seconds after it is used, so wherever the dispenser is, that is where the smell is. A bank of dispensers on the reception counter puts it directly into the faces of your staff and every visitor at the desk. Move them to the entrance line, position them so airflow carries away from the desk rather than across it, cap the number in any one location, and choose a lower-fragrance formulation if your procurement allows. That alone usually resolves the complaint. Footfall is an air-change problem. A reception sized for forty people holding a hundred and twenty at visiting hours will smell of a hundred and twenty people, and no fragrance changes that arithmetic. The levers are ventilation rate, filter condition, door management, seating density and whether visiting hours can be staggered. In a Vijayawada summer add the AC filter and drip tray to the list, because a unit running continuously from March to June loads a filter quickly and a loaded filter changes the room on its own. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Once the air is genuinely right, and only if the lobby is a separate air volume with infection control's agreement, a low background is a reasonable finishing touch - a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Not before. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: move the dispensers, fix the air change, service the filter - and only then consider whether anything else is needed.
If the air is genuinely right and the lobby is a separate volume, the finishing layer is a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 at low intensity with fragrance from ₹299. If the air is not right, that machine will make the problem more expensive rather than smaller.

Both problems have free fixes, and neither is fragrance

Both complaints arrive at a fragrance supplier and both should be leaving with facilities, which is worth saying before anything else.

Why this works
The free fixes, in order
1 Move sanitiser dispensers off the desk and onto the entrance line 2 Position them so airflow carries away from staff, and cap the number per spot 3 Address air change: ventilation rate, door management, seating density 4 Service the AC filter and drip tray before every Vijayawada summer
If, after the source is dealt with, one non-clinical public zone is still worth scenting, the machine for it is the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. If the honest answer is that no zone qualifies, this guide has done its job and you should not buy anything.
01
The dispenser map
The smell is wherever the gel is
Hospitals added dispensers quickly and in quantity, and placement was driven by compliance rather than by airflow - which is how a reception counter ends up with three of them within a metre of the person who works there all day. Alcohol evaporates immediately on use, so the smell is a map of your dispenser placement and nothing else. Draw that map, move what can be moved to the entrance line, and check where the air travels from each remaining one. This is an afternoon of work and it costs nothing, and it resolves the complaint more completely than any product.
Tip: Draw the dispenser map. The smell will match it exactly.
02
The occupancy problem
A room full of people smells of people
Heavy footfall is not a smell in itself; it is ventilation failing to keep pace with occupancy. If your reception holds three times its design occupancy for two hours every evening, the air change rate is the variable, and the available levers are ventilation, door management, seating density and staggering visiting hours. Fragrance added to that produces a crowded room that also smells of fragrance, which visitors read as a cover-up rather than as care, and which is the most common way a hospital lobby scenting project goes wrong.
03
The Vijayawada layer
A filter running six months without a break
From March through June an air-conditioning system in this climate runs almost continuously, recirculating the same air through the same filter and filling a drip tray that may not be on anybody's list. A loaded filter changes how a whole floor smells, independently of occupancy and independently of any fragrance setting. Put filter and tray servicing on a pre-summer schedule rather than a reactive one. It is a maintenance cost rather than a fragrance cost, and it is the cheapest improvement available to a large building.
Tip: Service before the summer, not when somebody complains.
The SOSA principle
The smell of sanitiser is not a fragrance problem. It is a map of where you put the dispensers.
Which means the fix is free, and it is not ours to sell you.

What is left once the air is actually right

Only when the dispensers are placed sensibly, the air change is adequate and the filters are clean is there anything left for fragrance to do - and by then there is usually very little.

Whether your lobby can be treated as its own air volume at all is settled in the lobby-zoning chapter, the prior question of whether a hospital should scent anything is in the hospital chapter, and the reason a stronger fragrance makes an odour problem worse is in the hospital odour chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range

Honest notes for a healthcare facility: SOSA makes no health, air-quality, infection-control, therapeutic or clinical claim for fragrance, and ambient scenting is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A persistent odour in a healthcare building is a ventilation, drainage or housekeeping finding and should be investigated as one - fragrance placed over it conceals a signal the facility needs. Clinical, sterile, procedure, diagnostic and patient-care areas are governed by the facility's own infection-control policy, which decides whether any area is scented; in the specifications we write, those areas are not. Where scenting is considered at all it is limited to non-clinical public zones such as a main lobby, on their own air handling, with infection control's agreement, and with a fragrance-free waiting option available. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A note from Sonal

I will say something here that a fragrance company is not supposed to say: a hospital is the one environment where my honest answer is usually no. Not because scenting is unsafe, but because the places people most want to fix - wards, corridors, treatment areas, anywhere with a persistent odour - are exactly the places where a fragrance would be covering a finding that belongs to the ventilation, drainage or housekeeping team.

Where there is a real conversation to have, it is narrow: a main entrance lobby, sometimes a VIP lounge, sometimes a day-care reception - non-clinical zones, on their own air, with infection control's agreement. Narrow is not a consolation prize. A lobby is the first and last thing every visitor experiences, and getting one zone right is worth more than scenting a building badly.

SOSA makes no health, air-quality, therapeutic or clinical claim for fragrance, and your infection-control policy outranks every recommendation on this page. If your HVAC shares returns between clinical and non-clinical zones, my advice is to leave it alone until that zoning is separate. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 if you want that assessed honestly, including the answer that you should not buy anything. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce sanitiser smell at a hospital reception?
Move the dispensers. Alcohol evaporates where it is used, so a bank of dispensers at the counter puts the smell at the desk. Relocate to the entrance line, position across airflow and cap the number in one spot.
What causes the stale smell when the reception is busy?
Air change failing to keep pace with occupancy. The levers are ventilation rate, door management, seating density and staggering visiting hours, not fragrance.
Will a scent machine solve either problem?
No. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Added to a stale crowded room it produces a stale crowded scented room.
Why does it get worse through the Vijayawada summer?
Because air conditioning runs nearly continuously from March to June, loading filters and filling drip trays. A loaded filter changes how a whole floor smells regardless of occupancy or any fragrance setting.
When is fragrance appropriate at all?
Only once the air is genuinely right, and only in a lobby that is a separate air volume with infection control's written agreement. Then a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 with fragrance from Rs 299, at low intensity. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
