The three rules, the honest limits, and who should not buy anything
Rule one: coverage assumes one connected volume. A rating in cubic metres describes a single connected body of air, and a 3,000 sq ft villa split across twelve rooms and two floors is not one 1,000m³ space - it is a connected living volume plus a set of sealed boxes. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. Households include children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than any visitor does, which is why gentle dosing is the default at home and why the settings we suggest are lower than the machine can run. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. If I read only this page, what should I actually do this month?
Three things, in this order, and none of them is a large spend. First, change the light in the room your family genuinely sits in during the evening, which is often not the formal drawing room: warm white bulbs at 2700K to 3000K, a dimmer on the circuit if you can, and two or three lamps at different heights with the ceiling light switched off and every source shaded. That is an afternoon and it changes more than a piece of furniture would. Second, spend an hour on the free items: clear the surfaces by giving the objects that live on them an actual home, hide the cables and the router, and cross-ventilate the ground floor properly at the coolest part of the day with windows open on opposite sides of the plan so the air has somewhere to go. Third, walk in through your own front door as a guest would, after dark, and notice what the house does to you - whether the hall is dark, whether the living room rings when you clap, and whether the smell changes as you walk from the door to the sofa. That walk tells you which of the remaining lanes your money should go into. What is the difference between the Vaayu and the Aangan for a villa?
They solve different shapes of problem, and the deciding factor is whether your house has central air-conditioning with ductwork. The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is a standalone waterless cold-air machine rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it scents the connected body of air it stands in - typically entrance, living, dining, passage and the stair void, which is where guests are and where the arrival moment happens. It reaches nothing behind a closed door. The SOSA Aangan at Rs 25,999 is an HVAC nebulising system ducted into central air-conditioning, and it distributes one register through the ductwork the house already has, which means it reaches every room the ducts reach, upstairs bedrooms included, because it is using the building's own distribution rather than trying to push air through doorways. So the honest rule is this: if your villa is large, has central air-conditioning and you want genuine whole-home coverage rather than a beautifully scented ground floor, the Aangan is the correct answer and the Vaayu is not. Can I put the Rs 299 Hotel Collection bottle into a Vaayu?
No, and this is the one product mistake worth stating in bold at every opportunity, because the two formats look similar on a shelf and are not interchangeable at all. The SOSA Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for a 100ml refill and Rs 1,799 for a Pack of 7 in 15ml is water-based, and it is designed to be used with water in the ultrasonic cool-mist machines: the Boond at Rs 899, the Sukoon at Rs 1,899 and the 6L Megh at Rs 3,499. Those machines make a fine cool mist from a water tank. The Vaayu is a completely different mechanism: it is a waterless cold-air nebuliser, which means it atomises neat fragrance oil directly with no water involved, which is why it has no tank, produces no damp and disperses more finely. It runs waterless oil, and it arrives with four hotel-inspired waterless blends already in the box as Bundle A, B or C. Putting a water-based product into a waterless machine is not a variation on the intended use, it is the wrong fluid in the wrong device. How do I choose which of the three Vaayu bundles to buy?
By the character of your house rather than by counting registers, and the three bundles are deliberately different in temperature. Bundle A is Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired, St. Regis Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired, which gives you two very clean white tea and cedar registers, one dry green cedarwood and vetiver register, and one warm amber and woods register - the broadest range of the three, and the safest choice if you are not yet sure what your house wants. What is the one mistake most villa owners make with home fragrance?
Buying several different pleasant things instead of holding one register, which is the same error as putting four metal finishes in one bathroom, only in a sense nobody thinks to audit. A candle in the living room, a gel in the guest bathroom, a spray in the hall and a reed of a different family in the bedroom gives you four unrelated smells layered along a route people walk in ninety seconds, and a nose reads that as confusion rather than as richness.
