The single-person answer: one 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749–₹849, running 6–8 weeks. Garden Bloom ₹799 if you know nothing about their taste.
The couple answer: a two-bottle duo, ₹1,498–₹1,598, because a two-room flat has two jobs to do. It is two bottles in one purchase, not a hamper — SOSA sells no hamper, gift box or gift card.
The floor: the least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749. Below it are jar candles from ₹379, a Sandalwood jar ₹449, mugs ₹474, wax melts ₹474 and a ceramic dish ₹664 — real gifts, none of them a diffuser.
2. Let the relationship set the ceiling, not your nerves. Overshooting is the more common mistake at Indian housewarmings, and a gift conspicuously above the relationship makes the recipient do arithmetic. For a colleague or a neighbour, one 50ml bottle is the correct size of gesture and needs no apology.
3. Let the home decide the shape. One room worth scenting means one bottle. Two rooms with different jobs means two bottles, which is what the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are. A large connected living-dining beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft means either two bottles at opposite ends or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 — never a bigger bottle, because size buys weeks and not reach.
4. Choose the scent last, and choose it cautiously. Garden Bloom ₹799 when you know nothing. Mountain Breeze ₹849 for someone who rejects anything "scented". Evening Calm ₹799 for a small flat. Morning Freshness ₹749 where the kitchen is part of the living space. Fresh Brew ₹849 only when you know their taste.
5. Know the floor and stop looking beneath it. ₹749 is the least expensive reed diffuser SOSA makes. There is no smaller size and no cheaper scent. Under ₹749: jar candles ₹379, Sandalwood ₹449, wax melts ₹474 (they need a burner), mugs ₹474, the ceramic dish ₹664 and a candle two-pack ₹664.
6. Do the shipping arithmetic once. Free shipping starts at ₹499. A ₹379 candle does not clear it and a ₹749 bottle does, so the gap between the cheapest gift here and the honest one is smaller on the final bill than it looks on the shelf.
7. Be honest about what fragrance does. It adds a smell to a room. It does not remove the paint, polish or damp smell of a new flat — ventilation and time do that — and I make no claim about how any gift will be received.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — the four questions, and why the order is the whole trick
People arrive at this decision from the wrong end because the wrong end is the interesting one. Fragrance is pleasant to browse; budgets and floor plans are not. But the three questions before the scent are the ones that can actually be answered with information you already have, and every one of them narrows the field enormously. By the time you reach the scent, a well-ordered decision has usually left you choosing between two bottles rather than fifteen products — and choosing between two is a task, whereas choosing between fifteen is an evening. Here are the first three, in order, with what each one settles.
Garden Bloom₹799 · 50mlHousewarming gifts fail upwards more often than downwards. A gift well above what the relationship calls for does not read as generous — it reads as a question the recipient now has to answer, and at a door with twenty other guests behind you that is an awkward thing to hand over. For a colleague, a neighbour or a friend you see a few times a year, one 50ml bottle at ₹749–₹849 is complete. For a sibling, a close friend or family, ₹1,498–₹1,598 for two bottles is proportionate and covers more of the flat. Above that you are into territory where the gift becomes a subject of conversation rather than a contribution to the room, which is rarely what anyone wanted. The second half of this question is information: the closer the relationship, the more you know about their taste, and the further you can safely move from the safe scent.Part two — the ladder, rung by rung, and what changes at each one
The complete SOSA ladder for a housewarming gift, from the least expensive thing worth giving to the point where I would tell you to stop. The column that matters is the third one: what actually changes when you move up a rung, because at several points on this ladder the answer is not very much, and knowing which those are is worth more than a list of products. No prices appear here for any category outside our own range — that comparison belongs on duplication, effort and shelf life rather than on money.
| Rung | What it is | What changes at this rung | Who this is the right gift for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹749–₹849 ★ | A 50ml reed diffuser, glass, six fibre reeds | Fragrance that runs 6–8 weeks with nobody home and nothing to operate | Almost everyone — friend, colleague, neighbour, cousin |
| ₹379 | Jar candle, roughly 15–18 hours | The first thing on the list that is genuinely giftable | A household you have seen light candles |
| ₹449 | Sandalwood jar candle | A note most Indian homes already have a relationship with | The same, where sandalwood is familiar |
| ₹474 | Ceramic mug or wax melts | An object that stays, rather than one that burns | Mugs, anyone. Melts, only if they own a burner |
| ₹664 | Candle two-pack (30–36 hrs) or the ceramic dish | Roughly double the burn time, or a permanent object with weight | The last useful rung below the reed floor |
| ₹1,249–₹1,349 | The same scent in 130ml | 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. Longer, not louder | Someone whose taste you already know |
| ₹1,498–₹1,598 | A two-bottle duo, 2 × 50ml | A second room. This is the first rung that changes the shape of the gift | A couple, a sibling, close family with two rooms |
| ₹1,899 | Sukoon ultrasonic, three 15ml fragrances included | Coverage of 270–320 sq ft, timers, and scent on demand | A big open living-dining, or someone who asked for one |
| ₹2,498–₹2,598 | A duo in 2 × 130ml | Two rooms covered for 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8 | Family, and only where you are sure of the scents |
| The honest caveat: the least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a diffuser — not a smaller bottle, not a travel size, not a starter version, because none of those exist. The only item on the store below ₹379 is the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299, which is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine and a poor standalone gift. Free shipping starts at ₹499: a ₹379 candle attracts a delivery charge, a ₹749 bottle does not, so compare the two on the final bill rather than the shelf price. | |||

Part three — who it is for, and the case for spending less
The relationship question does two jobs at once. It sets the amount, which most people understand, and it sets how far you can safely move from the safe choice, which most people do not. Those two move together: the closer you are, the more you know, and the more you know the less you need to hedge. For a colleague whose flat you have never seen, you are buying with almost no information, and the correct response to no information is a cautious, moderate, self-explanatory gift — one 50ml bottle of something widely liked, handed over without ceremony. For a sister whose taste you have known for twenty years, the safe choice is beside the point; buy the thing she will actually like, in the size that suits her flat, and be as specific as you want.
The version of this that nobody says out loud is that a housewarming is often a semi-public occasion, and gifts at a semi-public occasion are compared whether or not anyone means to compare them. That pushes people upwards, and upwards is where the mistakes live. A gift that is conspicuously above the others on the table does not sit comfortably with the person receiving it. I would rather sell one bottle at ₹799 to someone who leaves feeling the gift was right than a ₹2,598 pair to someone who spent the following week wondering whether it had been strange. If you are in doubt between two rungs, take the lower one and spend the difference on getting the scent right — which costs nothing, and matters more.
There is a specific case where spending less is not merely acceptable but clearly correct, and it comes up constantly: the housewarming you are attending out of courtesy rather than closeness. A new neighbour, a colleague's colleague, a cousin you see at weddings. Here the gift's job is to be pleasant, unremarkable and finished — it should not start a conversation, and it should not be something the household has to find a permanent home for. Evening Calm at ₹799 or Morning Freshness at ₹749 does that job exactly. If even that is more than the occasion calls for, a jar candle at ₹379 given plainly is a perfectly good gift, and the only thing that would make it a bad one is apologising for it.
Part four — the shape of the home, and how many bottles it takes
Now the part that decides whether the gift works once it is unwrapped. What follows is not about how large a bottle to buy — that question only controls weeks — but about how many sources the flat needs and where they should stand. As a rule of thumb, one 50ml bottle at six reeds serves one ordinary Indian room comfortably, and every additional room that matters is another bottle rather than a bigger one.
| The home | Rooms that actually want it | One bottle or two | Where the bottle should stand | What I would send |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1BHK, one person ★ | The living zone. The bedroom is optional | One | Near the entry, waist to chest height | Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 |
| Studio or 1RK | One connected space, and it saturates quickly | One, and suggest four reeds instead of six | Away from the bed and away from the hob | Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 |
| 2BHK, a couple | Hall and bedroom — genuinely different jobs | Two, sharing a note | Hall console; bedside table or dresser | Day & Night duo ₹1,498 |
| Open-plan kitchen and living room | The living side, never over the hob | One, dry and cool rather than warm | The far end from the kitchen | Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 |
| Large connected living-dining | Both ends of it | Two 50ml at opposite ends — never one 130ml | Two point sources, several metres apart | Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548 |
| Well past 300 sq ft, open, high ceiling | More than a passive source can keep up with | Neither — this is the format's ceiling | A socket, and somewhere out of a walkway | Sukoon ₹1,899, 270–320 sq ft |
| A rented flat they will leave within a year | Whichever room they sit in most | One, and the small size | Anywhere out of sun and draught | Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 |
| The honest caveat: the Megh at ₹3,499 is a 6-litre machine with roughly 100 hours of runtime and only about 215 sq ft of coverage — it is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade over the Sukoon, and I say so every time it comes up. The waterless Vaayu at ₹11,999 is commercial equipment and absurd in a flat. Neither is a housewarming gift. | ||||
Part five — the scent, chosen last and chosen cautiously
By this point the field is small, which is exactly why the scent belongs at the end. There are five compositions in the reed range and they divide cleanly by character rather than by quality. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night-blooming jasmine, rounded rather than sweet, and it is the default for a household you do not know because rose and jasmine are the two florals with the widest acceptance in Indian homes. Evening Calm at ₹799 is Kashmir lavender and chamomile and is deliberately the quietest thing we make — the right answer for a small flat, a nervous recipient or a bedroom. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus: cold, clean, and the one composition that sits comfortably beside cooking, which makes it the open-plan answer.
The two at ₹849 are the more definite ones. Mountain Breeze is Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar — dry, resinous, with nothing sweet anywhere in it, and it is the composition that most often works for people who have decided they dislike home fragrance, because it does not smell like the thing they are objecting to. Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee over Kerala vanilla and it is the fullest presence in the range; it is also the one I would not give to a household whose taste I could not vouch for, because warmth is precisely where taste divides. Where I use strength language anywhere in this guide, it refers to SOSA's own internal scale measured at six reeds — not an industry standard, not a concentration, and not a ranking of how good a fragrance is. Strength is in any case the recipient's to adjust: pulling out two reeds quietens the room in ten seconds and makes the bottle last longer, which is the one control a reed diffuser gives its owner.
Two further rules if you are giving more than one bottle. Two compositions in one home must share a note, or the doorway between the rooms becomes a seam where neither fragrance makes sense — Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze meet on green eucalyptus, which is what Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 is; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk, which is Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598. And the gaps, stated plainly: there is no oud, no musk-forward composition and no aquatic in this range. If the household is specifically an oud household, none of my five is the right gift and I would rather say so than stretch the nearest one over the hole.
Part six — where SOSA is the wrong answer, and the final routing
Four situations where I would not sell you anything from this page. If anyone in that household has said they dislike scented things, buy from another category entirely — a diffuser runs continuously and cannot be politely put away, so it becomes a small task rather than a gift. If there is a newborn, or anyone who has told you they are sensitive to fragrance, the same applies; it is not a decision for a guest to take on the household's behalf. If the flat is still being painted or worked on, the bottle will spend its first weeks underneath solvent and be judged in the worst possible conditions — hold it back a few weeks, or hand it over saying plainly that it is for afterwards. And if they already run a diffuser or a machine in that home, the space for this gift is taken.
The fifth is the one people find hardest to hear from a founder: sometimes the honest answer is to spend less than you planned, or to buy nothing at all from us. A household that has told you exactly what they need should be given that thing. And nothing here removes a new-flat smell. Paint, polish, adhesive and damp are dealt with by ventilation and time — windows open, fans running, a few weeks of it. Fragrance is additive: it puts something into the air rather than taking anything out, and it sits alongside a paint smell until the paint smell fades.
| If this is you | Buy | Price | What you can safely skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| You have an invitation and no information ★ | Garden Bloom 50ml | ₹799 | The rest of this page — this is the default and it is a good one |
| Colleague or neighbour, courtesy invitation | Morning Freshness 50ml | ₹749 | Any thought of the duo — it is above the relationship |
| Sibling or close family, two-room flat | Day & Night duo, 2 × 50ml | ₹1,498 | The 2 × 130ml at ₹2,498 unless you are sure of the scents |
| Someone who rejects anything "scented" | Mountain Breeze 50ml | ₹849 | Everything floral and everything sweet |
| Big open living-dining, or they want it on demand | Sukoon, three fragrances in the box | ₹1,899 | A second reed bottle, and the Megh entirely |
| Your ceiling is below ₹749 | Cozy Corner jar or Sandalwood jar | ₹379 · ₹449 | Looking for a cheap diffuser — there isn't one |
| Fragrance is off the table for this household | Cloud ceramic dish or mugs | ₹664 · ₹474 | Every other page in this guide |
| They have told you what they actually need | That thing, from wherever sells it | — | All of the above, without hesitation |
Versailles
The reason this guide is built as an order of questions rather than a list of products is that I have watched the same conversation happen dozens of times, and it always goes wrong at the same place. Someone messages us asking which scent to gift, and four exchanges later it turns out they had not decided how much to spend, did not know whether the recipient lived alone, and had never been to the flat. The scent was the only question they could not answer, and it was the one they had led with.
I have tried to make the ladder in Part Two honest in both directions. There are rungs on it where I tell you the extra money buys nothing you want — the 130ml is not a stronger gift, the 2 × 130ml is not a better duo unless you are certain of the scents — and there is a rung near the bottom where the right answer is a ₹379 candle and no more thought. A price list you can trust has to include the places where it stops being worth climbing.
What I will not do anywhere in this guide is tell you how a gift will land. I do not know. Nobody selling you a gift list knows, and the ones who claim to are the ones to be careful with. What I can describe is the object: glass, six fibre reeds, an alcohol-free and phthalate-free composition on a heat-stable base that has been through 45°C summers and 85% monsoon damp, needing one flip a week and finishing after a stated number of weeks. Everything is made in Pune, in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
