The second, and not because subtlety is more tasteful. A level tuned to be noticed in the first thirty seconds is a level somebody has to live in for three days.
Quick answers — read this first
Should hotel guests notice the fragrance on arrival? Preferably not consciously. A level pitched to register in the first thirty seconds is experienced for the rest of the stay by a guest whose nose has adapted, and when they re-enter from outside it reads as heavy.
What is the right target? A level a guest does not comment on during the stay but recognises when they return months later. That is the narrow band worth aiming for, and it sits lower than most properties set.
How is it set? From the guest doorway by somebody who has been outside for twenty minutes, at the point where they are unsure whether they can smell anything. Then locked, which is why the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is key-locked.
The short answer
Short answer: Aim for recognised later, not noticed now. Arrival-noticeable is day-two oppressive, because the guest keeps re-entering from outside.

Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Should a hotel's fragrance be noticeable on arrival or only recognised in retrospect?
In retrospect, and the argument is practical rather than aesthetic. A hotel guest is not a shopper. A retail visitor experiences a space once, for a few minutes, with a fresh nose, which is why retail scenting is tuned to be noticed - there is no second exposure to worry about. A hotel guest experiences the same lobby perhaps twenty times over three days, and crucially they keep leaving the building and coming back, so they re-encounter it repeatedly with a reset nose after a morning at Amber Fort or an evening out. A level tuned for the first thirty seconds is therefore not a first impression; it is a recurring one, and by the second afternoon it has stopped being charming and started being the thing they mention to each other in the lift. The correct target is narrow and testable: no guest comments on it during the stay, and a returning guest recognises the property when they walk in a year later. Finding it means leaving the building for twenty minutes so your own nose resets, standing where a guest stands rather than at the desk, and setting the machine at the point where you are genuinely unsure whether you can smell anything. If you are certain you can, come down a step. Then lock it, because staff adapt within roughly fifteen minutes and will otherwise raise it by degrees across a season, every season, without anyone intending to. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the enclosed lobby, Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, key-locked with the setting written into the SOP. SOSA makes no claim that scenting affects bookings, reviews or guest spend and is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: a hotel guest walks back in from outside a dozen times. Set for the twelfth arrival, not the first.
Set once, from the doorway, then locked: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 with fragrance from ₹299.

Why the noticeable level fails on day two
The reason retail advice does not transfer to hotels is that retail has no second day.
Why this works
Setting for a three-night stay
The machine most independent Jaipur hotels use in the lobby: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot creep. Fragrance from ₹299.
A shopper meets a scented space once. A hotel guest meets the lobby on arrival, after breakfast, after a day out, after dinner, and again the next morning, each time returning from outside air with a nose that has partly or fully reset. A level designed for a single striking impression is therefore experienced as a striking impression repeatedly, which is a different and much less pleasant product.
Tip: Retail scenting advice assumes there is no day two. There is.
02
The staff paradox
The people who set it cannot smell it
Adaptation takes about fifteen minutes, so everyone working in the building has stopped perceiving the scent long before the first guest arrives. That makes staff structurally the worst judges of level, and they are almost always the ones adjusting it. The person setting it must come in from outside, and after that the machine must be locked so that a well-meaning shift does not undo the decision.
03
The right test
Silence during, recognition after
A good level produces no comment at all during a stay and a flicker of recognition at the door a year later. If guests are complimenting the fragrance, the level is high rather than the choice inspired - which is worth knowing, because owners often read those compliments as confirmation and turn it up further. Quiet praise for the hotel generally is the outcome you want; praise for the smell specifically is a signal.
Tip: Compliments about the scent are a level reading, not a review.
The SOSA principle
If a guest can describe your hotel's fragrance, they were thinking about it, which is not what you were paying for.
Recognition at the door a year later is the only compliment that counts.

Setting for the third morning, not the first minute
At that level the choice of register matters less, which is useful, because it lets you pick something durable rather than something impressive.

The lobby is not a first impression in a hotel. It is a twelfth impression, and that is what you are setting.

The SOSA commercial range
Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for hotels: fragrance is an ambience decision only and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A hotel is a crowd environment with guests who stay for days, so restrained registers and low, locked levels are recommended; guest rooms should have an unscented option available on request, and any area sharing air with food service should be left unscented or switched off through service. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A note from Sonal
The thing that makes a small hotel memorable is not an unusual fragrance. It is that the place smelled the same on Tuesday morning as it did when the guest walked in on Sunday night - and the same again two years later when they came back. Consistency is the entire mechanism, and it is available to a twelve-room property on exactly the same terms as a chain.
Which is why almost all of my advice to boutique owners is about restraint and locking. Set the level from the doorway, not from the desk you have been sitting at for an hour, because your nose has already adapted and theirs has not. Then lock it. The commonest failure I see is not a bad choice of scent; it is a machine that drifted upward over eight months because somebody kept nudging it.
The limits I hold to. Fragrance is an ambience decision, never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you want a lobby sized properly, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Should guests notice a hotel's fragrance on arrival?
Preferably not consciously. A hotel guest re-enters from outside repeatedly over a stay, so an arrival-noticeable level becomes heavy by the second day.
What is the right target level?
One that draws no comment during a stay but is recognised by a returning guest a year later. It sits lower than most properties set.
Why can't staff judge the level?
Because adaptation takes about fifteen minutes, so everyone in the building has stopped perceiving it before the first guest arrives.
Guests compliment our fragrance - is that good?
It usually means the level is high rather than the choice inspired. Quiet praise for the property generally is the better signal.
How often should the setting be reviewed?
Once a year at most, by somebody entering from outside. Otherwise it drifts upward. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
