The service lounge is one of the longest dwells in the whole retail motor trade. A customer sits there for one to three hours with a laptop, a coffee and a phone charger while their car is on a ramp forty feet away, and almost nothing else in the dealership holds a person that long. So yes, it is a genuine scenting job. But it is the second job. The first is that the air from the workshop must not be arriving in that room at all, and no fragrance on any price list is a substitute for the extractor, the door and the pressure that keep it out.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a dealership customer lounge be scented? Yes, once the workshop air has been dealt with. A service lounge holds a customer for one to three hours, which is longer than a showroom visit, a delivery handover or most restaurant meals, and a room that people occupy that long is worth designing properly. But the order is fixed. Extraction in the bays, a closed and self-closing door on the lounge, and air pressure that pushes lounge air towards the workshop rather than the other way round all come before fragrance. Once the lounge is holding its own air, one quiet register at a low locked setting is a straightforward and worthwhile addition. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 or a Megh at Rs 3,499 covers a typical lounge comfortably.

What happens if you scent a lounge that still gets workshop air? You get a third smell that is worse than either of the two you started with. Engine oil, brake dust, solvent, tyre rubber and exhaust are strong, distinctive and instantly recognisable, and a white tea and cedar register laid over them does not remove them - it sits alongside them, and the customer reads the combination accurately as a room trying to cover something. That is a worse outcome than an honestly workshop-smelling lounge, because a workshop smell in a service area is at least explicable. Fragrance is a finishing layer on air that is already clean and moving. If the lounge smells of the bay at four in the afternoon, the answer is the extractor and the door, not a higher setting.

How do you stop workshop air reaching the customer lounge? Three physical measures, none of them a fragrance product. Extraction at the source: tailpipe extraction on the bays, extraction over the wash and preparation area, and ventilation sized for the work being done there. A real door between the lounge and the service area, self-closing, with a vestibule or lobby if the layout allows one, because a single door propped open for a car to be driven through undoes everything. And pressure: the lounge should be very slightly positive relative to the workshop so that air moves from the lounge towards the bays rather than in reverse. Your building services engineer decides that, not a scenting supplier. WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 once the lounge is holding its own air.
The short answer
Short answer: A dealership customer lounge is a genuine scenting job - customers sit there one to three hours - but subtraction comes first. Workshop air (engine oil, brake dust, solvent, tyre rubber, exhaust) must be kept out by bay extraction, a self-closing door or vestibule, and slight positive pressure in the lounge. Layering fragrance over workshop air produces a third smell that is worse than either. Once the lounge holds its own air, one quiet register at a low locked setting: Ritz-Carlton-inspired or Westin-inspired, from Rs 299. Megh Rs 3,499, Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
How do I scent a service customer lounge when the workshop is right next door?
In this order, and the first three are not fragrance. 1. Extract at the bays. Tailpipe extraction on every bay where an engine is run, extraction over the wash and preparation area, and ventilation sized to the work. This is the only thing that actually deals with exhaust, solvent and oil vapour. No SOSA product neutralises, removes, filters or purifies any of it, and we will not suggest otherwise. 2. Put a real door in. Self-closing, kept shut, ideally with a small lobby or vestibule between the lounge and the service area. One door wedged open so a car can be driven through cancels the whole scheme for the rest of the afternoon. 3. Get the pressure right. The lounge should sit very slightly positive relative to the workshop, so air leaves the lounge towards the bays rather than arriving from them. Your building services engineer owns that decision. 4. Now look at the lounge on its own terms. A 600 sq ft lounge at a twelve-foot ceiling is 7,200 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 204 cubic metres - well inside a Megh (₹3,499), and comfortably inside a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, about 1000m³, app and timer) if the lounge is open to the showroom. 5. Choose a register that does not argue with the building. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend (white tea, bergamot, cedar) or the Westin-inspired blend (white tea, aloe, cedar) from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299). These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. 6. Never scent the car. Not the cabin, not the vents, not as a handover gesture. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your lounge dimensions. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: extraction, a closed door and lounge-positive pressure first - then one quiet white tea register at a locked low setting. Megh ₹3,499, Vaayu ₹11,999, blends from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Keeping the bay out before you put anything in

Three things decide whether this room works: what is arriving from the bays, how long the customer is actually sitting there, and what else the lounge already smells of before you add anything.

Why this works
The lounge, in the order that actually works
1Bay extraction, a self-closing door and lounge-positive pressure come first2Fragrance over live workshop air makes a third smell, worse than either3600 sq ft at 12 ft = 7,200 cu ft = about 204 cubic metres of lounge air4One white tea register, locked low: Megh Rs 3,499 or Vaayu Rs 11,999
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Subtraction
The workshop is a manufacturing floor sharing a wall with a waiting room
Look honestly at what is being made next door. Engines are started and run, so there is exhaust. Brake work releases dust. Parts washers, degreasers, thinners and adhesives are solvent. Tyres come off and go on, and new rubber has a smell that carries a long way. The preparation and wash bay adds warm water, detergent and drying compound. That is not an atmosphere problem, it is an industrial ventilation problem, and it is dealt with by tailpipe extraction on the bays, extraction over the wash and preparation area, and a ventilation design sized for the work. Then it is contained: a real door between the customer side and the service side, self-closing so that it is shut by default rather than by somebody's discipline, and a vestibule if the plan allows one. Then it is held: the lounge slightly positive in pressure relative to the workshop, so that when the door does open, air leaves the lounge rather than entering it. Every one of those is somebody else's job - your service manager, your facilities contractor, your building services engineer - and every one of them is worth more to the lounge than anything we sell. Get them done and the lounge becomes an ordinary, easy room to scent. Skip them and there is nothing worth doing at all.
Tip: the extractor, the door and the pressure are the three decisions - fragrance is the fourth and smallest.
2
The dwell
One to three hours is a long time to sit in someone else's air
This is what makes the lounge worth the trouble. A showroom visit is twenty minutes of movement. A handover is a scheduled hour with a lot going on. The service lounge is one to three hours of a person sitting still, working on a laptop, drinking a coffee, taking a call, occasionally looking at the screen that shows where their car is in the queue. They are stationary, unoccupied and breathing your air, which is exactly the profile that makes a room's atmosphere register - and it is also exactly the profile that makes overdosing intolerable. A level that is pleasant for ninety seconds in a showroom is heavy by minute forty in a seated wait. So the lounge takes the lowest useful setting in the building, held there and locked, and it takes a register with air in it rather than one that fills the space. Two other lounge realities are worth naming because they are usually the real smell in the room and nobody counts them: the coffee machine, which is a genuine and generally welcome smell that fragrance should sit under rather than argue with, and food brought in by customers on a long wait. Ventilation handles both. A Vaayu (₹11,999) with app and timer is the easiest way to hold one locked level across a full service day.
3
The room
Size the lounge, not the dealership
Nobody scents a dealership. They scent a set of rooms, and the lounge is one of them, defined by the door that separates it from the bays. Take a typical enclosed service lounge of 600 sq ft at a twelve-foot finished ceiling: 600 multiplied by 12 is 7,200 cubic feet, and 7,200 divided by 35.3 is about 204 cubic metres. A smaller lounge of 400 sq ft at ten feet is 4,000 cubic feet, about 113 cubic metres. Both of those are ordinary, modest rooms in scenting terms, and a Megh 6L at ₹3,499 will hold either of them through a long unattended day, with a Sukoon at ₹1,899 sufficient for a compact one. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 earns its place when the lounge is genuinely open to the showroom floor, when there is a mezzanine gallery above it, or when one machine has to hold the lounge and the customer circulation together - because then you are back to a connected volume rather than a room. Ceiling height moves this number more than owners expect, which is a whole subject of its own: see why showroom ceiling height changes every scenting decision rather than guessing at it.
Tip: measure the lounge as a room, not the dealership as a floor - the door between them is a wall.
The SOSA principle
A lounge next to a live workshop is a ventilation project with a fragrance finish - never a fragrance project with a ventilation problem.
Extraction, a self-closing door and lounge-positive pressure first. Then one quiet register, locked low, for a customer who is sitting in it for three hours.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Our lounge has a glass wall onto the workshop. Does that change anything?
It changes the experience and not the air, which is a useful distinction. A glass viewing wall is a good thing in a service department: customers who can see their car being worked on generally find the wait easier to sit through, and the transparency says something about how you run the bays. What matters for scenting is whether the glass is sealed and whether the door beside it is genuinely closed. A viewing wall with a wedged-open door beside it is the worst of both, because you get the workshop air with the theatre. Seal the glazing, fit a self-closing door and, if the traffic through it is constant, ask your contractor about a small vestibule. Then the lounge is a room again, and an ordinary one to scent.
Can a machine be set higher to overcome the workshop smell?
No, and this is the single most common request we turn down. Raising the output does not cancel exhaust, solvent or oil vapour, because fragrance does not remove anything from the air - it adds to it. What a higher setting produces is a stronger version of the hybrid smell, which customers identify as a cover-up more readily than a quiet one, and which your service advisors and reception team then sit inside for a full shift. If the lounge still smells of the bay, the problem is upstream and mechanical. Deal with it there, then come back to the fragrance question with a room worth scenting. We would rather lose the sale than sell a machine that is being asked to do a ventilation engineer's job.
Should the service lounge smell the same as the showroom floor?
One register across the whole customer side, at levels that suit each room, is the right architecture. A customer who walks in past the showroom to reach the service desk should experience one building rather than two, and a change of scent on that walk reads as a change of standard. What varies is the level: the showroom is large, open, ventilated by its doors and experienced in movement, while the lounge is smaller, more enclosed and occupied for hours, which means the lounge sits lower. The workshop side stays out of it entirely. If you run several sites, write the register and the setting down rather than trusting memory - our page on keeping a multi-brand dealership group consistent covers exactly how.
Our lounge has a coffee machine and customers bring in food. Is that a problem?
Coffee is not a problem worth solving - it is one of the few working smells in a dealership that customers actively like, and a lounge that smells faintly of fresh coffee at eleven in the morning is doing fine. Ambient fragrance should sit underneath it rather than compete with it, which is another argument for the low, dry white tea registers rather than anything warm or sweet. Food is different, because reheated or strong-smelling food in an enclosed lounge lingers for hours and mixes badly with everything. The fix is extraction over the pantry counter, a bin that is emptied during the day rather than only at close, and a habit of ventilating the room between busy periods. None of that is a fragrance decision.
Will scenting the lounge make customers happier about waiting for their service?
We will not claim that, and we would be careful with anyone who does. Ambient scent research supports improved evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes - and congruence and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in that work. It says nothing about how a customer feels about a delayed repair, an unexpected estimate or a car that is not ready when promised. Those are handled by accurate time estimates, a call when something changes, and a service advisor who explains the invoice properly. A good lounge is worth building because people spend hours in it, not because fragrance repairs a bad service experience. It will not, and nothing we sell claims to.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
