How do I set the intensity? Judge it on the top floor rather than the ground floor, because that is where fragrance accumulates first in a multi-storey house.
Does it cover the bedrooms? Not behind closed doors. Bedrooms need reed diffusers from Rs 749.
A sealed villa behaves like a chimney
A multi-storey house behaves differently from a flat and the difference is easy to feel rather than explain: the top floor is warmer. That happens because a stairwell is a vertical shaft connecting volumes at different temperatures, and warm air, being less dense, rises through it while cooler air moves in below to replace it. In a Hyderabad villa with its doors shut for much of the year, that circulation is running continuously, driven by the sun on the roof and the temperature difference between floors, and it carries on whether or not the air conditioning is helping. For anybody placing a fragrance machine, that is not a complication. It is free distribution. A waterless nebuliser works by putting a dry nano-mist into air the building is already moving, and in a villa the building is already moving air upward through the middle of itself. So the placement rule is straightforward and it is the opposite of what most people do. Put the unit low - in the ground floor circulation, near the foot of the staircase or close to an air conditioning return - rather than carrying it to the floor where the family spends the evening. The mist joins the rising column and reaches the landing, the upper hallway and the stair void without any further help, which is precisely the set of spaces that make a villa feel finished and the precise set of spaces no bottle can occupy, since a staircase has no console table. The corollary is where to judge the result, and it is the single most useful sentence on this page: set the intensity by standing on the top floor, not the ground floor. Because fragrance rises and accumulates, the upper landing is the first place a house becomes over-scented, and somebody adjusting the dial while standing next to the machine will keep increasing it until the top of the house is unpleasant. Start at the lowest useful setting, leave it a day, then walk up and decide. In a sealed house, less is almost always right - fragrance does not escape here the way it does in an open-window city, so what accumulates stays. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the product for this. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted fragrance oil into a dry nano-mist with no water, no heat, no dampness and no oily film, and coverage is up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet, which covers most villas in the city's gated developments and the main floors of larger independent houses. Four hundred millilitre refillable tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour run windows, day selection and adjustable intensity - and in a villa of this kind the day selection earns its place, because a weekend when the whole house is occupied and a weekday when two rooms are occupied want different settings. Under thirty-eight decibels, twelve volts at five watts, one hundred and sixty-five by eighty by two hundred and fifteen millimetres, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening. Refills afterwards are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, and never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. In a centrally cooled villa the HVAC mount deserves a thought, because putting the mist into the return means the cooling system does the distribution and the stack effect does the rest. Three things this gift does not solve, stated plainly. First, bedrooms. A closed door is outside the field, because the machine works through the air the house is circulating and a shut bedroom is disconnected from it. So a villa is nearly always a hybrid: the machine for the shared and circulation space, and reed diffusers in the bedrooms where still enclosed air is exactly what evaporation is designed for. Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine for one hundred and thirty is lavender with chamomile; Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, which reads dry and suits this climate; Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus; a duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees covers two rooms. Second, the terrace. Most villas here have one and it is used in the cooler months, and it cannot be scented at all - outdoor air is unbounded, and nothing in this range is an outdoor product. A candle in a sheltered corner works within a metre or so of where people are sitting, never unattended. Third, size. If the connected indoor volume is larger than roughly three thousand square feet, one Vaayu is not the whole answer: SOSA Angaan at twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees covers around eight to ten thousand square feet and SOSA Meenar at thirty-eight thousand five hundred covers twelve to eighteen thousand, both HVAC nebulising units, and for a very large house that conversation belongs on WhatsApp rather than in a cart. Two closing notes. In a new villa nothing starts on day one - paint, polish, varnish and new joinery need airing, which in peak summer here means using early mornings and evenings and running fans rather than leaving windows open all day. And a dry climate empties floor-drain traps, so a rarely used bathroom or utility can let sewer air into the house; pour water down the drain, and then scent the clean room, because fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
Warm air rises up the stairwell - so place it low and check the top floor first
One unit, placed where the house is already working.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| Placement · low and central | Foot of the stairs or an AC return. Not the floor where the family sits in the evening. |
| Intensity · judged on the top floor | Fragrance rises and accumulates. Start low, wait a day, then walk up. |
| Bedrooms · reeds ₹749 to ₹1,349 | Closed doors sit outside the field. A duo ₹1,498 covers two rooms. |
| Terrace · not scentable | Outdoor air is unbounded. A candle works around the table, never unattended. |

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
