What decides between a machine and bottles? Whether the ground floor is one connected volume over roughly 2,000 sq ft, and whether there is circulated air for a machine to use.
What if the house is brand new? Give the box and suggest starting it in a few weeks, once paint, polish and new joinery have aired.
Five things to notice when you visit
Every other page in this set tells you to ask the built-up area, and that is a reasonable fallback. But for a villa housewarming you are almost always going to be inside the house, either before you buy or on the day, and a few minutes of looking tells you more than a number would. Here are the five things worth noticing, in the order they matter. The first is whether the ground floor is one connected volume or a set of rooms. Stand at the entrance and look: if the living, dining and kitchen run together with no doors between them, and the hallway opens into that same space, the house has one large volume and that is the strongest possible case for a machine, because a bottle standing in one corner of a connected space produces a scented pocket and a great deal of unscented air. If instead there is a formal living room with a door, a separate dining, and a kitchen that closes, then every room can have a correctly sized source of its own, and reed diffusers are the better answer even in a large house. This single observation decides more than the square footage does. The second is whether the house has circulated air. Look up at the ceilings and along the walls for return grilles, ducted vents, or a plant room - or simply ask whether the cooling is ducted or room units. A waterless nebuliser works by putting a dry nano-mist into air the building is already moving, so a house with ducted cooling has a distribution system built into it, and the machine can even be mounted on an HVAC return so the cooling does the work. A house with individual room units still works, because the stack effect and open internal doors move air anyway, but it argues for placing the unit in the main circulation rather than a corner. A house with neither - no ducting, individual units rarely used, doors mostly open to outside - is a house where bottles do better. The third is the vertical arrangement. Count the floors and look at the staircase. In a closed multi-storey house warm air rises through the stairwell and cooler air replaces it below, which means a machine placed low on the ground floor distributes upward on its own, and it also means the top landing over-scents first. Anybody setting the intensity should judge it from the top floor rather than next to the unit. If the stairwell is enclosed with doors at each level, that lift disappears and each floor becomes its own problem, which usually means bottles or a machine per occupied level. The fourth is how new the finishes are, and it is the one people skip. Run a hand near a door frame, look at the skirting, notice whether the wardrobes smell of plywood when opened. A recently completed villa is off-gassing - emulsion and enamel paint, polish, varnish, adhesive, sealant, cement, new plywood and laminate, new upholstery - and ventilation is the only thing that removes it. Fragrance layered over curing paint smells of both. In this city the airing takes longer than the textbook few weeks, because in peak summer the windows cannot simply stay open, so the practical version is early mornings and evenings, fans moving air through rather than around rooms, and wardrobe doors left open. If the house is at that stage, the right gift structure is to hand over the box, have it placed where it will live, and say it should be started in a few weeks - with a single bottle for one settled room as the usable half now. The fifth is a question about habits rather than architecture: are the bedroom doors open or shut? In most households with children or staff they are shut, and a closed door is outside a machine's field, because the machine works through the air the house circulates. So the answer is almost always a hybrid - the machine for the shared and circulation space, bottles in the bedrooms where still enclosed air is exactly what evaporation is built for. With those five observations the gift is settled. If the answers point to the machine, the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is waterless with no tank, no humidity added and no oily film, covers up to a thousand cubic metres or about two thousand to three thousand square feet, holds four hundred millilitres lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill, runs on one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity from a Bluetooth app or its onboard buttons, sits under thirty-eight decibels at five watts, weighs nine hundred grams, lies flat or mounts on a wall or HVAC return, has auto-stop and a key lock, carries CE, RoHS and SGS, is made in India, and ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils so it runs the first evening. Its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic machines. If they point to bottles, that is not a lesser gift: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty; Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine; Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine; and duo sets at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees, which is where most housewarming gifts should sit. Two closing notes. If the connected indoor volume is larger than roughly three thousand square feet, one machine is not the whole answer - SOSA Angaan at twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees covers around eight to ten thousand square feet and SOSA Meenar at thirty-eight thousand five hundred covers twelve to eighteen thousand. And where there is a griha pravesh it is a religious occasion, nothing in this range is a religious item, and where a smell has a cause - damp, a bin, a dried-out floor-drain trap, which a dry climate produces easily - fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
Each one tells you something the built-up area does not
Decided by looking, not by asking.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| Connected ground floor + ~2,000 sq ft | Machine. A bottle in one corner of a connected volume makes a pocket. |
| Separate rooms with doors | Bottles - each room gets a correctly sized source of its own. |
| Ducted cooling | Consider the HVAC mount, so the cooling system does the distributing. |
| Fresh paint and plywood smell | Give the box, start in a few weeks, one bottle for a settled room meanwhile. |

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
