Why avoid strong florals here? Because garden jasmine and flowering trees already come in through open windows, and two florals competing reads as confusion rather than luxury.
What is the ladder? Hotel Collection from Rs 299, candles from Rs 699, reed diffusers from Rs 749, duo sets from Rs 1,498, and the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for large homes.
Here the neighbourhood already supplies fragrance
Most home fragrance advice assumes a home is a sealed container and the only smells inside it are the ones the household has put there. In a city of independent houses with compounds, that is not the case, and the difference is worth designing around rather than ignoring. Houses here have gardens or at least a strip of planting, windows that stay open for most of the year because the climate allows it, and neighbours close enough that their mornings are audible and occasionally fragrant. What comes in through those windows, on a typical day, is a good deal: jasmine from a garden or a compound wall, flowering trees in the street depending on the season, incense from somebody's morning puja, cooking from next door in the evening, and the particular smell of wet earth when rain arrives on dry ground, which is one of the better free pleasures available anywhere. None of that can be controlled, and most of it nobody would want to control. It does, however, make one common gift choice a mistake. A heavy floral register indoors is competing with floral scent coming in from outside, and two florals in the same air do not combine into something richer - they read as confusion, and the indoor one reads as artificial by comparison, because the outdoor one is the real thing. So in these houses the useful move is to choose a register that sits underneath what the garden is doing rather than beside it. Drier and cleaner works better than sweet and floral. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - resinous and dry, it reads as woodiness rather than as flowers, and it sits naturally with the teak and rosewood common in houses built to be kept for generations. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and cool and is the right choice for a room near a kitchen or a hallway where people come in from outside. Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, warm and unfloral, which suits a study or a dining room. The two florals are not ruled out - Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is British rose with night-blooming jasmine, and Evening Calm at the same is lavender with chamomile - but they belong in interior rooms away from the garden side, a bedroom at the back or an internal corridor, where they are not in a conversation with what is outside. Evening Calm in particular remains the best bedroom choice anywhere. Three placement notes specific to these houses, all free. First, a window that is open most of the day makes the room an unbounded volume, and fragrance placed near it leaves rather than accumulating - so bottles belong in the calm interior of a room, away from windows, doors and any fan or air conditioner airflow, and they will empty sooner than the label suggests if put in a draught. Second, the productive hours are the closed ones: most households here shut up in the evening, and that is when an indoor register actually registers, which argues for scenting the rooms used in the evening rather than the ones used at midday. Third, the entrance is worth one bottle on its own, because in a house with a compound the front door is where people transition from outside to inside, and a scented hallway does more for the impression of a house than a scented living room does. On the rest of the ladder: Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees for fifteen millilitres is a water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, three to six drops a tank, in seven registers including Quiet Luxury with white tea, bergamot and cedar, Forest Suite with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, and Lobby Bar with citrus, pepper and amber - SOSA's own interpretations, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Candles from six hundred and ninety-nine rupees and woodenwick candles at nine hundred and forty-nine rupees and five paise in gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood and lavender are the occasional product, and in a house with a veranda or a sit-out they are the right thing for an evening outdoors - within a metre or so of where people are sitting, in a sheltered spot, never unattended, since a terrace or garden cannot be scented at all. Duo sets at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees are where most gifts should sit, and three hundred millilitre refills at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees or five hundred at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine are the right gift for a household that already owns bottles. And for a genuinely large home - roughly two thousand square feet of connected volume and up - the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the whole-house answer: waterless cold-air nebulisation producing a dry nano-mist carried by the air the house is already moving, covering up to a thousand cubic metres or about two thousand to three thousand square feet, reaching the entrance, hallway, stairwell and landing that no bottle can serve, with a four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill, one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity, under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, nine hundred grams, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, auto-stop and key lock, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included. In a house lived in with the windows open it should be scheduled for the closed evening hours rather than run continuously, and placed in the main circulation rather than near an open door. Its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - never the water-based Hotel Collection, which is a separate system. Two closing rules. Under roughly two thousand square feet the machine over-scents and bottles are correct. And where a smell has a cause - a damp wall after the monsoon, a store room, laundry dried indoors on a wet day, a floor-drain trap that has dried out - deal with the cause, because fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
Garden jasmine, flowering trees, incense at dawn - so the indoor register should not argue with it
An indoor register that sits under the garden rather than beside it.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
