Why is Bengaluru different for home fragrance? Because homes here are often lived in with the windows open, which makes the room an unbounded volume and speeds up evaporation.
What about the wet months? Then the honest answer is drying and airing first. A musty smell has a cause, and fragrance is a finishing touch rather than a fix.
There are two Bengalurus for a home fragrance gift
Most home fragrance advice is written as though a room were a sealed box, and in most Indian cities that is close enough to true for much of the year, because the heat or the dust keeps windows shut and the air conditioning running. Bengaluru is the exception, and it is worth taking seriously rather than treating as a pleasant detail. A home with its windows and balcony doors open is not a bounded volume at all. Air moves through it continuously, which is why the city's houses feel fresh without much help - and it is also why fragrance behaves differently here in three specific ways. First, anything volatile leaves faster. A reed diffuser works by evaporation into the air around it, and moving air carries that away rather than letting it accumulate, so a bottle placed near an open window or in a cross-draught will smell strong at the bottle and of nothing two metres away, and it will empty noticeably faster. The fix is free: place bottles in the calm parts of a room, away from windows, balcony doors and air conditioner airflow, and place them where people pause rather than where air passes. Second, the useful scenting hours are the closed hours. Most Bengaluru households do shut up in the evening, and that is when ambient fragrance actually accumulates and is noticed - which means the right setting for anything adjustable is an evening and night pattern rather than a continuous one. Third, over-scenting is less likely and under-placing is more likely: people conclude that a product is weak when in fact it was asked to work against an open door. The wet spells reverse all of this, and they bring a different problem which deserves the honest answer rather than a product. When windows stay closed for a long grey stretch, moisture accumulates in the parts of a house that do not dry - a ground-floor room, a bathroom used rarely, the inside of a wardrobe, a cupboard against an external wall, laundry dried indoors, a rug that got damp. What people smell then is not an absence of fragrance; it is damp, and damp has a cause. The right sequence is to find the cause and deal with it: dry the laundry properly or use a dryer, run a dehumidifier or fans in the affected room, open the wardrobes and cupboards when the weather allows, check for a leak or seepage on an external wall, and make sure any floor drain that has dried out gets water down it, because a dry trap lets sewer air into a room and no fragrance will cover that. Then scent the clean, dry space - which is where a gift becomes useful rather than a distraction. This is the one point in the category where the honest answer loses the sale and it is still the right answer. With those two conditions in mind, here is the ladder. At two hundred and ninety-nine rupees the Hotel Collection fifteen millilitre bottle is a water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, three to six drops a tank, in seven registers including Quiet Luxury with white tea, bergamot and cedar, Forest Suite with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, and Lobby Bar with citrus, pepper and amber - these are SOSA's own interpretations, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Note that in a damp month an ultrasonic diffuser adds moisture to a room, which is the opposite of what a wet week needs, so this suits the dry months better. Candles from six hundred and ninety-nine rupees and woodenwick candles at nine hundred and forty-nine rupees and five paise in gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood and lavender are the occasional product. Reed diffusers are the everyday one: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty, Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and suits a kitchen-adjacent room; Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine, British rose with night-blooming jasmine; Evening Calm at the same, lavender with chamomile; Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar, which is the register most people reach for in a damp month because it reads dry and resinous; Fresh Brew at the same, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla. Duo sets at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees are where most gifts should sit, and three hundred millilitre refills at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees or five hundred at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine are the right gift for somebody who already owns the bottles - and the better gift in this city, where bottles empty faster in moving air. At the top, for a large home only, the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees: a waterless cold-air nebuliser that breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the air the house is already moving, covering up to a thousand cubic metres or about two thousand to three thousand square feet, with four hundred millilitre tank, one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows, day selection, adjustable intensity, under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, nine hundred grams, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included. Two Bengaluru-specific notes on it. Being waterless is a genuine advantage in a humid month, because nothing is added to the air but fragrance - no tank, no plume, no dampness. And the scheduling is what makes it work in an open-window house: set it for the closed evening and night hours rather than running it into an open living room in the afternoon. Its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - never the water-based Hotel Collection, which is a separate system. And the size rule holds here as everywhere: over roughly two thousand square feet the machine, under it bottles, and for a space larger than three thousand square feet or a commercial one, SOSA Angaan at twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees for eight to ten thousand square feet or SOSA Meenar at thirty-eight thousand five hundred for twelve to eighteen thousand.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
