Why is the living room hard to scent? Because it functions as one space with an open balcony, and on a high floor there is real wind moving through it, which carries fragrance away.
What is the fix? Place bottles in the interior - a corridor nook, a study, bedrooms - and schedule anything adjustable for the closed evening hours.
A high floor with the balcony open has real wind through it
Large apartments in this city are designed around a particular pleasure, which is that the balcony can be used for most of the year. So the sliding doors open in the morning and stay open, the living and dining and balcony become one continuous space, and on an upper floor there is nothing to slow the air - a breeze that is barely noticeable at ground level is a steady movement through a flat on the fourteenth. That is genuinely nice to live in and it is the reason two things happen that people misdiagnose. The first is that a reed diffuser placed on the living room console seems weak. It is not weak. It is standing in a current, and evaporated fragrance is being carried out over the balcony rail as fast as it leaves the bottle, so there is a strong smell within half a metre of the sticks and very little at the sofa. The second is that the same bottle empties noticeably faster than the one in the bedroom, for exactly the same reason. Both of these look like product failures and both are placement failures, which is good news, because placement is free to fix. The principle is simple: fragrance accumulates where air is calm and disappears where air moves. In a large Bengaluru flat that means the interior of the plan is the productive place and the balcony line is the least productive. Put bottles in the corridor or the nook off it, in the study, in the bedrooms, on a shelf in the hallway near the entrance - places with no through-draught and no air conditioner blowing across them, which is the other common mistake, since an air conditioner's airflow does the same thing a balcony breeze does. Then let the living room be handled by time rather than by placement, because most households do close up in the evening, and once the doors are shut the living space behaves like a normal room and holds whatever is in it. For bottles that means the living room will read well in the evening and read faintly in the afternoon, which is an acceptable outcome given that the afternoon version of that room is effectively half outdoors. For anything adjustable it means the setting should be an evening and night pattern rather than a continuous one. The five registers are Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty, Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and suits a room near a kitchen; Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine, British rose with night-blooming jasmine; Evening Calm at the same, lavender with chamomile, the usual bedroom choice; Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar, which reads dry and is the register most people prefer in a damp month; Fresh Brew at the same, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, which suits a study. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is where most gifts for a flat should sit, and three hundred millilitre refills at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees or five hundred at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine are the better gift in this city specifically, because bottles here empty faster than the label suggests. Where the flat is genuinely large - roughly two thousand square feet of carpet or built-up area and up, not super built-up, which counts lobby and corridor that are not in the flat - the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees does something bottles cannot. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist fine enough to travel with the air the flat is already moving, producing one even field rather than pockets, and reaching the entrance and the internal corridor, which in a large flat are the spaces that make it feel finished and the spaces nobody puts a bottle in. Coverage up to a thousand cubic metres, about two thousand to three thousand square feet. It is waterless, which is worth having during a long damp spell because nothing is added to the air but fragrance - no tank, no plume, no dampness. Four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows, day selection, adjustable intensity. Under thirty-eight decibels, which matters in a flat because flats are acoustically tight. Five watts, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening. Refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Three placement notes for a high-floor flat. Put the machine in the interior circulation - between the living space and the corridor, or near an air conditioning return - and not on a shelf near the balcony doors, where its output leaves the building. Start intensity low and raise it, because a flat over-scented at maximum is the commonest mistake and it is also what pushes fragrance into a shared lobby when the front door opens. And bedrooms with their doors closed sit outside the machine's field, since it works through the air the flat circulates, so a bottle belongs in the main bedroom regardless. Two honest closing notes. If the flat is under roughly two thousand square feet, bottles are correct and the machine is not, whatever the occasion. And a musty smell in a wet stretch has a cause - laundry dried indoors, a bathroom that never dries, a wardrobe against an external wall, a floor drain whose trap has dried out. Dry and air the space first, because fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
So the most-used room is also the least scentable - and that changes where things go
Right places, right hours.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
