Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · One Gift, Many Aunts
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There is a version of Diwali gifting that treats five aunts as five separate problems, and it is the version that eats an entire weekend. The better purchase is one product bought five times — and this page exists to take that argument all the way to its conclusion, which means naming the exact bottle rather than gesturing at a principle. It is Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799, and the reasoning is not that it is our best composition. It is that rose and jasmine are the two fragrance references almost every Indian home already recognises, which is the only quality that matters when one object has to go into six households you have never smelled.
Quick answers — read this first
The single answer: Garden Bloom 50ml, ₹799. British rose and night-blooming jasmine, mid-range on our own internal strength scale, floral without being sharp. It is the composition with the fewest people who actively dislike it, which is a different and more useful property than being the best one.

The arithmetic: 3 × ₹799 = ₹2,397 · 4 × ₹799 = ₹3,196 · 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995 · 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794 · 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392. One order, one product, free shipping above ₹499.

Why not five different scents: aunts compare. Any difference between the gifts is read as a ranking of the recipients, whether you meant one or not. Identical gifts have nothing in them to rank.

The one honest exception: expect roughly one aunt in the set to be wrong for it — she already owns a diffuser, dislikes anything floral, or has said plainly she does not want fragrance in the house. Give her a candle two-pack at ₹664 and keep the rest of the set uniform.
The short answer
Short answer: buy Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799, once for each aunt, in a single order. A reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it — no flame, no socket, nothing to switch on, and 6–8 weeks of use from the day it is stood on a shelf. It asks nothing of the recipient, it does not have to be eaten within a week, and it does not have to be displayed when you visit.
Why the same one for everybody: a set of relatives who see each other read variation as hierarchy. Give four aunts four different scents at four different prices and you have produced a small ranking that will be discussed at some point without you. Give them the same bottle and there is nothing to discuss. This works only if the choice is a decision rather than a default — a gift chosen for the set is fine, a gift chosen because you ran out of time is a different object with the same barcode.
Straight answer
What one Diwali gift works for every aunt in the family?
1. Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799, bought once per aunt. Rose and jasmine — two references that already exist in almost every Indian household's memory, which means nobody has to learn what they are holding. It sits at 8.9 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds, in the middle of the range rather than at the top. That is our scale, not an industry standard and not a quality ranking.

2. The property you are buying is breadth of agreement, not excellence. A single-SKU gift is not trying to be somebody's favourite thing. It is trying to have the smallest possible number of people who react badly to it across six homes whose taste you cannot check. Those are different objectives and they pick different bottles.

3. Identical removes the ranking. Relatives who see each other compare gifts, and they compare price first and object second. Four different things at four different prices is a hierarchy you did not intend to publish. The same bottle four times contains no information about how you rank anybody.

4. It survives the circuit. Sealed glass, no flame, no socket, nothing perishable and nothing that has to be refrigerated or eaten within a fortnight. It can sit in a car boot, be handed over in a crowded doorway and stay unopened on a side table for a week without becoming a problem for anyone.

5. It leaves no debt and no ornament. A consumable with a stated life — 6–8 weeks at 50ml — finishes. Nobody has to display it on a shelf and then produce it when you next visit, which is the quiet cost of every decorative gift ever given between relatives.

6. Expect one exception in the set, and plan for her. Someone already runs a diffuser, dislikes floral firmly, or has made it clear she does not want fragrance in the house. Give her a candle two-pack at ₹664 or an Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474 and leave the rest of the set alone.

7. Buy it in one order. Any number of bottles clears the ₹499 free-shipping line comfortably, and one order is one decision. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab and no minimum order quantity, so there is nothing to negotiate at this scale — for anything much larger, ask through the contact page rather than assuming terms that do not exist.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799, once per aunt, in one order. 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995. Rose and jasmine carry the widest agreement across homes you cannot check; identical gifts remove the comparison; and a consumable leaves no ornament anyone has to display. Expect one exception in the set and give her a candle two-pack at ₹664.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser 50ml, one Diwali gift for every aunt
The single answer, named
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose & night-blooming jasmine ₹799 / 50ml
Rose and jasmine are not adventurous choices and that is the entire point. They are the two floral references an Indian household already holds, which means the bottle explains itself the moment it is opened — no learning, no acquired taste, no question about what it is meant to be. Mid-range on our own internal scale at six reeds, floral without the sharpness that makes some rose compositions divisive. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, no flame and no socket. 6–8 weeks at 50ml; the 130ml at ₹1,299 runs 14–18 weeks and is duration rather than a stronger room. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT base, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity.

Part one — why one SKU, several times

The instinct to personalise is a good instinct in the wrong place. It belongs to gifts given one at a time to people you know well, and it collapses when applied to a set of six relatives whose houses you have been inside twice. What personalisation actually produces at that scale is variation, and variation between relatives is read as ranking. Here is the case for buying the same thing several times, made properly, because it is usually presented as laziness and it is very nearly the opposite.

1
THE COMPARISON PROBLEM
Any difference between the gifts becomes information about the recipients
Aunts talk to each other. They talk to each other more than almost any other category on a Diwali list, and they have been comparing notes since long before you were buying anything. Give four different gifts and you have published a ranking — the one who got the bigger bottle, the one who got the cheaper thing, the one whose gift was clearly bought last. None of that was your intention, and none of it needs to have been. A single identical bottle across the set contains no information at all about how you feel about any of them, which is precisely what you want from a gift given out of obligation and affection in a mixture you would rather not have to itemise.
The test: if the four of them laid the gifts on one table, would anything there require an explanation? If yes, buy fewer different things.
2
THE REAL COST · DECISIONS, NOT RUPEES
Six decisions cost an evening; one decision costs four minutes
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser bottle with six fibre reedsGarden Bloom₹799 · 50mlEvery separate gift on a list carries a research cost, a second-guessing cost and a small ongoing anxiety until it is handed over. Six of those run into an entire evening, and the money they save is trivial: optimising each aunt individually might move the total by a few hundred rupees across the whole set. You are trading an evening of your life for the difference between ₹749 and ₹849, six times. The single-SKU purchase is not the cheap option — 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794 is a real amount of money — it is the one that costs you almost nothing to make. And it repeats: next Diwali the decision is already taken, which is the part most people underestimate, because this list does not go away.
3
WHAT A SINGLE SKU HAS TO SURVIVE
Four tests, and most gift categories fail at least one
A gift you are buying six of has to work in six homes you cannot inspect, so it must pass all four of these. One: no dietary exposure — nothing that assumes what a household eats, avoids or is allergic to. Two: no display obligation — nothing decorative that has to be visible on a shelf when you next visit, and produced quickly if it is not. Three: nothing else to buy — wax melts need a burner the recipient may not own, and the 15ml Hotel Collection needs an ultrasonic machine, so neither is a blind-set gift. Four: it survives the circuit — a car boot in October, a crowded doorway, a week unopened on a side table. A sealed glass bottle passes all four. It is not the only thing that does, but it is a short list.
The rule: a set gift is chosen on what it cannot do wrong, not on what it does best.

Part two — the elimination, scent by scent

If one bottle has to go to all of them, four of our five compositions have to be eliminated, and it is only honest to do that out loud with our own products. The question at every row is not "is this good" — all five are compositions I stand behind — but "how many people in six unknown households would rather it were something else".

The elimination
Five SOSA scents judged only on breadth of agreement across homes you cannot check
Scent 50ml What it reads as in a home you do not know Who it loses Verdict for a set of aunts
Garden Bloom ★ ₹799 Rose and jasmine — instantly recognised, needs no explanation The small number who reject florals outright The set gift. Buy this one, several times
Evening Calm ₹799 Soft lavender — quiet, and slightly coded to a bedroom People who dislike lavender, and they are firm about it Excellent single gift, second choice for a set
Morning Freshness ₹749 Lemon and eucalyptus — clean, and to some ears clinical Anyone who wants a home to smell warm rather than fresh The value pick, and the right one near a kitchen
Mountain Breeze ₹849 Dry pine and cedar — often read as a men's fragrance Households that want a home to smell soft, not cool Right for one aunt, wrong for a set of six
Fresh Brew ₹849 Coffee and vanilla — the strongest and most food-adjacent The most people, by some distance. It divides sharply Never the blind set gift. Buy it for someone you know
The honest caveat: this table ranks nothing except suitability for a blind, repeated purchase. Fresh Brew sits last here and is the composition I am proudest of; it is simply the wrong instrument for a job that rewards agreement over character. If you know one aunt roasts her own coffee, buy her Fresh Brew and buy it deliberately — that is a gift for a person, and it is a different purchase from the one this page is about.
Shop this guide
The set gift, the runner-up and the exception
The SOSA principle
A gift bought six times is chosen for the fewest objections, not the most enthusiasm. Agreement is the product.
Which is why the composition I am proudest of is the one I would never send blind to six houses at once.

Part three — the aunt the set does not fit

Every set has one. In my experience it is almost exactly one in five or six, and it is worth finding her before you order rather than after. The commonest version already owns a reed diffuser, in which case a second one is not a gift but a scheduling problem — two compositions running in one flat produce a seam where they meet, and she will end up putting yours away. If you happen to know which scent she runs, a bottle of the same thing is a genuinely excellent gift and one of the few places where duplication is a feature. If you do not know, give her the candle two-pack at ₹664 and keep the rest of the set exactly as it is.

The second version dislikes floral, firmly and on principle. Some people find rose in a room cloying no matter how it is composed, and no amount of jasmine underneath changes that. The third version does not want fragrance in the house at all — no candles anywhere, nothing on the bathroom shelf, and a general sense that a home should smell of what happens in it. Neither of these is a taste you can talk anyone out of, and both are visible from the doorway if you have ever been inside. An Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474 or the Cloud trinket dish at ₹664 covers both cases without drawing attention to the exception.

And there is the aunt who is not really on the obligation list at all — the one you actually ring during the year. Uniformity is the right rule for a set of relatives you see annually; it is the wrong rule for a relationship with real information in it. The neat way to handle her without breaking the set is to give the same scent in the larger size: Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299, which runs 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. It is visibly the same gift, so nothing on the table needs explaining, and it is quietly more. That is 4 × ₹799 + ₹1,299 = ₹4,495 for a set of five, which is the version of this purchase I would make myself.

Personalising six gifts publishes a ranking you never meant to write. Identical says nothing, which is usually the kindest thing a gift can say.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — the arithmetic, three aunts to eight

The whole purchase in numbers. Every figure below is arithmetic on our listed prices, not a quotation, and no discount, slab or minimum order applies at any of these quantities because none exists.

By the size of the set
What one SKU costs across three, four, five, six and eight aunts
How many aunts The buy The arithmetic Per head What I would change
Five, the commonest set ★ Garden Bloom 50ml × 5 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995 ₹799 Nothing. This is the page's answer
Three Garden Bloom 50ml × 3 3 × ₹799 = ₹2,397 ₹799 At three, the 130ml at ₹1,299 each is affordable
Four Garden Bloom 50ml × 4 4 × ₹799 = ₹3,196 ₹799 Nothing — one order, one decision
Six Garden Bloom 50ml × 6 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794 ₹799 Check availability before you commit to six of one scent
Eight Garden Bloom 50ml × 8 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392 ₹799 At eight, ask through the contact page first
Five, one of them much closer 50ml × 4, plus 130ml × 1 4 × ₹799 + ₹1,299 = ₹4,495 ₹4,495 ÷ 5 = ₹899 Same scent, larger size — visibly the same gift
Five, one already owns a diffuser 50ml × 4, plus a candle two-pack 4 × ₹799 + ₹664 = ₹3,860 ₹3,860 ÷ 5 = ₹772 Only if you cannot find out which scent she runs
Honest notes for buyers: the least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a reed diffuser in any size. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no invoicing arrangement, no custom branding and no lead time, and sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set — the totals above are simply the listed price multiplied, and there is nothing to negotiate at these quantities. For a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing rather than assuming terms that do not exist, and no delivery timing is promised anywhere on this page. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep any bottle well away from diyas, candles and open flame, stand it on a tray because the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Free shipping above ₹499. Handmade in small batches in Pune; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser 50ml, the runner-up set gift
If the set genuinely dislikes florals
SOSA Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender & chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
The runner-up, and the one I would switch the whole set to if I knew rose was unwelcome in that family. It is the softest composition we make — lavender over chamomile, quiet rather than sweet, and less likely than anything else in the range to become a topic of conversation. Its one weakness as a set gift is that lavender has genuine detractors, and they tend to be certain about it; where Garden Bloom loses a few people quietly, Evening Calm loses fewer but louder. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, no flame and no socket. 6–8 weeks at 50ml, 14–18 at the 130ml ₹1,299. Whichever you pick, pick one and buy it for everybody.

A note from Sonal

A perfumer is trained to argue for the interesting choice. Four years of selling into Indian homes has taught me that the interesting choice is frequently the wrong one for a list. When one object has to go into six households you cannot inspect, the correct property is agreement, and agreement is unglamorous. Rose and jasmine win not because they are inventive but because everybody already knows them, and a gift that explains itself in the first second is a gift that does not ask anything of the person holding it.

I resisted writing this page for a while, because naming one bottle as the answer feels like retail rather than perfumery. Then I sat with my own Diwali list — eleven names, four of them aunts — and did exactly what I am recommending here, and the relief of having made one decision instead of four was disproportionate to the money involved.

What I will not tell you is that any of them will love it, or remember it, or think better of you for it. I have no way of knowing. What I can tell you is what is in the bottle, how long it lasts, what it asks of the person who receives it, and which of our five compositions is likeliest to be quietly fine in a house I have never been inside. Everything is blended in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to give all my aunts the same thing?
No, provided it was chosen rather than defaulted to. A set of relatives who see each other read variation as ranking, so identical gifts are usually the kinder arrangement rather than the lazier one. What does read badly is four things that are almost the same — three different scents at three different prices looks like whatever was left on the shelf. Same product, same size, same price, handed over without ceremony.
Why Garden Bloom rather than the strongest or the cheapest?
Because a set gift is judged on how few people dislike it. Fresh Brew ₹849 is the strongest thing we make and divides opinion sharply; Morning Freshness ₹749 is the least expensive and reads clean but slightly clinical to people who want a home to feel warm. Garden Bloom at ₹799 sits between them on both counts, which is the whole job.
50ml or 130ml if I am buying six?
50ml. At six reeds both sizes project the same into a room — the larger bottle buys duration, not reach, running 14–18 weeks against 6–8. Across a set, that difference is ₹1,299 − ₹799 = ₹500 a head that nobody will perceive as a better gift. Use the 130ml deliberately, for one person you are closer to, so that the set stays visibly uniform while one bottle is quietly larger.
Is there a discount for buying six or eight?
No. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab and no minimum order quantity, and there is no corporate or gifting programme to enrol in. The totals on this page are the listed price multiplied and nothing more. For a genuinely large order it is worth asking through the contact page before you commit — mainly to confirm that the quantity you want exists, since everything is made in small batches.
What if two of my aunts live together?
Then it is one home, not two, and one bottle is enough for the space — but a shared gift can read as half a gift to each of them. The tidy solution is one 50ml each anyway, given separately, which costs ₹1,598 for the pair and removes the arithmetic from the room entirely. Two bottles in one flat is not a problem when they are the same composition; it is only two different scents in one connected space that produce a seam.
