Set the level with reed count: six reeds full strength, four for a quieter or smaller room. That is the volume dial, not the bottle size.
Size honestly: 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, 130ml runs 14–18, for a room up to about 150 sq ft. Bigger living room, use 130ml or two bottles at opposite ends.
Expect to stop smelling it. Adaptation takes about twenty minutes. The signature is for the person arriving.
2. Set the strength with reed count, not with quantity. Reed count is the volume dial. Six fibre reeds is full strength and is right for most living rooms; four is right for a smaller or quieter room, or if you find the scent announcing itself; two or three belongs in a small bathroom. Adding a second bottle in the same corner does not make a room smell better, it makes one corner smell loud. Spread, do not concentrate.
3. Put it where the air moves, not where it looks best. Evaporation from a reed diffuser rises with temperature and airflow, so a bottle in a still alcove behind a plant does almost nothing while the same bottle on a console near the entrance or in a mild draught reaches the whole room. Keep it off the floor, away from direct sun and away from a fan blowing at it — heat and strong draught mean stronger throw and a much shorter bottle life.
4. Let the fabric do the buffering. This is what changed when you cleaned everything. Clean curtains, upholstery and rugs absorb the scent from the air and re-release it slowly, so the room holds its character through a window being open, a cooking session or an overnight gap. It is the same slow two-way sorption that was working against you before, now pointed the other way, and it is the reason a signature settles in over about a fortnight rather than on day one.
5. And accept that you will stop noticing it. Olfactory adaptation is essentially complete in around twenty minutes, so you personally will not smell your own signature after the first week. That is normal and it is not a sign the product has failed. Resist the urge to compensate by adding reeds. Judge it by walking in after thirty minutes out, or by what visitors say.

Why clean fabric is what makes a signature possible
A room with no soft furnishings at all — bare tile, glass, a hard bench — is very difficult to give a consistent character to. Whatever you put into the air leaves with the next air change, and a cross-ventilated room turns over three to eight times an hour. There is nothing to hold anything. A room full of textiles is the opposite: the fabric buffers. It absorbs from the air when concentration is high and gives back when concentration falls, which smooths out every disturbance — someone opening the balcony door, an evening of cooking, the diffuser running low. The reservoir you spent a weekend emptying is the same reservoir that now keeps your signature steady, and that is not a coincidence, it is one mechanism working in two directions.
It follows that a signature takes time to establish and does not arrive on the first evening. When you start a new blend in a clean room, the first several days are partly spent loading the fabric; the room reaches its steady character after roughly a fortnight and then holds it with very little variation. It also follows that switching blends is slower than switching bottles — the previous scent is stored in the curtains and cushions and will keep arriving for a week or two. That is the real argument for choosing one thing and staying with it: the physical medium of a home signature is the furniture, and furniture changes its mind slowly. Hotels do not achieve their consistency by making the scent strong. They achieve it by never changing it.
Choosing, placing and setting the level
The always-on layerFrom ₹749The five SOSA reed blends behave quite differently in a living room. Morning Freshness — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus — reads bright and waking and suits a room used mostly in daylight, 50ml ₹749. Evening Calm, Kashmir lavender and chamomile, is soft and settling and better in a room used in the evening, 50ml ₹799. Garden Bloom, British rose and night-blooming jasmine, is floral and dressed and reads as deliberate, 50ml ₹799. Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar — is dry and grounded and is the safest choice if you dislike anything sweet, 50ml ₹849. Fresh Brew, Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, is warm and roasted, and works well in a living room adjoining a kitchen because it sits beside food rather than arguing with it, 50ml ₹849. Pick the one you would still want in November.
Matching the layer to your living room
Rooms differ more than scents do. Find the row that describes yours and it will tell you which tool, which size and which level to start at — and one row here is still a reminder that fragrance is not always the right answer.
| What you notice | Most likely cause | How to confirm it | What actually fixes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room up to about 150 sq ft, clean fabric ★ | One reed diffuser is enough — this is the standard case | Judge it on your first breath back after thirty minutes outside | 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 for 14–18 weeks, six reeds, on a console |
| Large open-plan living and dining area | One bottle in the middle will read strong nearby and absent at the ends | Stand at each end of the room and compare what you get | Two 130ml bottles at opposite ends, six reeds each, rather than one |
| Scent reads too loud, or guests mention it | Over-dosed for the room volume, not a fault in the blend | Remove two reeds and reassess after three days | Run four reeds instead of six; move the bottle further from seating |
| You want scent for evenings and guests but not all day | A switchable layer suits this better than an always-on one | Note when you actually want the room to smell of something | Sukoon ₹1,899, 3–6 drops of Hotel Collection from ₹299 |
| Air-conditioned living room, doors kept closed | Recirculating air — quieter throw, much longer bottle life | Compare the same bottle on an AC day and a windows-open day | Expect the 130ml to outlast 18 weeks; keep the bottle away from the vent |
| Room still reads musty or sour under the fragrance | A live source — damp, mould or a dry drain trap | Switch the fragrance off for two days and judge the room bare | Fix the moisture or the plumbing first. This is not a fragrance job. |
| If none of these fit: start at four reeds rather than six for the first week. It is far easier to add a reed than to quieten a room you have over-scented, because the fabric has already absorbed the excess and will hand it back for days. | |||

Sizing, placement and upkeep
Size it for the room, then buy the larger bottle of one scent. A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 runs six to eight weeks and a 130ml from ₹1,249 runs fourteen to eighteen, both rated for a room up to roughly 150 sq ft with six reeds. For a living room, the 130ml is almost always the better purchase: it costs less per week, it needs handling three or four times a year rather than eight, and — more importantly for a signature — it removes the temptation to try something different every two months. If your living and dining space runs beyond 150 sq ft, two bottles at opposite ends beat one bottle with extra reeds, because you are trying to cover a distance rather than raise a volume.
Place it where air moves and leave it alone. Capillary wicking drives the whole thing, and evaporation rises with temperature and airflow — so a console near the entrance or a side table in the path between rooms works, and a still corner behind a curtain does not. Keep it out of direct sun and off warm surfaces, or you will get a strong fortnight and an empty bottle. Start at four reeds for the first week, judge it honestly by leaving for thirty minutes and walking back in, and only then go to six. Flip the reeds once in the first fortnight and then stop fiddling; a signature is established by consistency and undermined by adjustment.
Maintain it, and add the switchable layer only if you actually want one. When the throw drops after a couple of months with liquid still in the bottle, replace the reeds rather than the fragrance — reeds clog with fragrance residue over time and a clogged reed is the most common cause of a quiet diffuser. Refills at 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499 are the economical way to hold one scent across a year. Separately, if you want the room to be noticeably scented for an evening rather than quietly scented always, the Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers roughly 270–320 sq ft and takes 3–6 drops of a water-based Hotel Collection scent from ₹299 — run it for an hour before people arrive and switch it off. Plenty of living rooms use both: reeds as the constant, the machine as the occasion. The two liquids are not interchangeable — oil-based reed fragrance must never go into a machine, and the water-based fragrance will not wick up a reed.
The order that works
You have already done the first three steps, which is why this one will actually work. If you have not, do them first — a signature laid over a loaded reservoir is not a signature, it is a blend of two things.
| Step | What to do | When | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Remove the source | Already done: no live source, no wet trap, no damp wall — check once more before you commit to a scent | Before anything else | ₹0 |
| 2. Move the air | Already done: cross-ventilation twice daily, which you keep doing regardless of what is in the room | Daily, five to ten minutes | ₹0 |
| 3. Deal with what holds it | Already done: covers washed, cushions sunned, curtains cleaned, rug aired, mattress stripped | Weekly to monthly | ₹0 |
| 4. Then the always-on layer ★ | A SOSA reed diffuser — one blend, six reeds in a living room up to 150 sq ft, 130ml lasting 14-18 weeks, refilled rather than replaced | 50ml 6-8 weeks · 130ml 14-18 | from ₹749 |
| 5. Or the on-demand layer | Sukoon with a Hotel Collection scent — the occasion layer for evenings and guests; covers roughly 270-320 sq ft, off overnight | Run it when you want it | ₹1,899 |
Versailles
The question I get asked most often is which scent, and the honest answer is that it matters far less than whether you stay with it. Six months of one blend beats a beautiful blend changed every eight weeks. A home signature is a memory people form about your house, and memories need repetition. If you genuinely cannot choose, buy a duo and give the living room one of them permanently and the bedroom the other.
The reason I care about the cleaning coming first is not moral. It is that this last step performs visibly better in a clean room, and I would rather sell one bottle that works than two that disappoint. Clean textiles buffer — they hold what you give them and give it back gently for hours, which is why a signature holds through an open window or a cooking session. Dirty textiles do the same thing with a mixture you did not choose.
Two practical things people get wrong at the end. They over-dose, because they cannot smell their own room after twenty minutes and assume it is too weak — start at four reeds, judge by walking in from outside, and let visitors be your instrument. And when the throw drops they buy new fragrance when the reeds are what have clogged. Change the reeds first; it costs nothing and it usually fixes it.
