SOSA commercial scenting
A new building has no memory attached to it yet - which is the opportunity, and the trap
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Sales gallery opening while construction continues on the same site."
Dust, paint and new-material odour come first. Fragrance over curing paint is a cover-up
Construction phase
What we specify
"Double-height experience centre with a full glass facade facing west."
Height and afternoon solar gain both change the job; measure volume, not floor plate
New-build volume
What we answer
"Developer asks whether scenting should be in the HVAC drawings."
If the building will be scented at all, yes - retrofitting around a finished ceiling is the expensive route
Design stage
What we specify
"Sales gallery and the sample apartment next door."
Different jobs. The gallery is a brand space; the sample flat should smell like a home, or like nothing
Two spaces
What we specify
"New brand with no existing customer memory to build on."
Then consistency from day one matters more than distinctiveness - pick something you can hold for years
New identity
What we specify
"Developer with several projects wanting one recognisable scent."
One fragrance, output set per building - and commit before the first project opens, not the third

Founder Diaries · SOSA Commercial Scenting Guides

Design it in now, introduce it later. Five provisions are almost free while the ceiling is open and genuinely expensive once it is closed, and the fragrance itself should not go in until the building has stopped smelling of itself.
Quick answers — read this first
Should scenting be designed alongside the interior? Yes for the provisions, no for the switch-on. A power point where the machine will sit, a mounting position, HVAC provision if you intend to scent through the ducting, a sensible machine location out of the airstream and a service route are all cheap now and costly to retrofit.

When should the fragrance actually start? After the building has finished off-gassing. New paint, adhesives, sealants, joinery and textiles release for weeks, and fragrance introduced over that is masking rather than scenting - which visitors read accurately.

What should I tell the fit-out team? Where the machine will sit, that it needs power and access for refilling, whether it will be freestanding or wall-mounted, and whether the HVAC should carry the scent. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 mounts freestanding or on a wall; an Aangan at ₹25,999 goes into the ducting.
The short answer
Short answer: Design the provisions in now - power, mounting, HVAC, location, service access - and switch the fragrance on after the building stops off-gassing.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained gallery or reception, the Aangan at ₹25,999 where scenting rides the building's own HVAC, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your drawings, ceiling heights, glazing, HVAC design and opening date - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
Should scenting be designed alongside the interior for a new business?
Design it in now; switch it on later. Five provisions are close to free while the ceiling is open and awkward afterwards. One: a power point where the machine will actually sit, which is rarely where the spare socket ended up. Two: a mounting position if it is going on a wall - at a height that serves the occupied zone rather than the ceiling void, which matters in a double-height space. Three: HVAC provision if you intend to scent through the ducting rather than into the room, because an Aangan at ₹25,999 mounts to the system and that is a mechanical-drawing decision rather than a furniture one. Four: location out of the airstream - not directly in front of a diffuser or under a fan, and not immediately inside the entrance where street air pushes in. Five: a service route, so that refilling does not require moving a reception desk. None of these commit you to anything, and all of them cost a fraction now of what they cost through a finished ceiling. What should not happen at fit-out is the fragrance itself. New paint, adhesives, sealants, joinery, carpet and upholstery release for weeks, and in a fast-building region like the Amaravati belt there is usually construction dust in the air as well. Fragrance introduced over that is masking, and visitors read masking accurately. Ventilate, let the building finish, and introduce the scent when the room genuinely smells of nothing. Then a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: five cheap provisions at design stage, and no fragrance until the building has stopped smelling of itself.
Tell the fit-out team where the machine sits and what it needs. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is freestanding or wall-mounted with a power point; an Aangan at ₹25,999 goes into the HVAC and belongs on the mechanical drawings. Fragrance from ₹299, later.

Five things that are cheap now and expensive later

The cost difference between planning this at design stage and retrofitting it is large, and the decision to actually switch it on can wait.

Why this works
Design-stage provisions
1 A power point where the machine will sit, not where the spare socket is 2 A mounting position at a height that serves people, not the ceiling void 3 HVAC provision on the mechanical drawings if scenting will ride the ducting 4 A location out of the airstream, and a service route for refilling
For a new gallery the usual specification is a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, or an Aangan at ₹25,999 where it is designed into the HVAC at fit-out stage. Fragrance from ₹299 - introduced once the building has finished off-gassing.
01
Why now is cheap
Open ceilings and unfinished walls
A socket, a mounting plate and a duct provision are trivial while services are exposed and genuinely disruptive once plaster, ceiling and joinery are finished. The provisions also cost nothing if you later decide not to scent at all - an unused socket in a reception is not a loss. That asymmetry is the whole argument: low cost now, high cost later, no penalty for changing your mind. It is the same reasoning that puts data cabling in walls before anybody knows where the desks will go.
Tip: Provisions are cheap now, and cost nothing if unused.
02
The placement decision
Made once, and usually badly
Machines end up where the socket is, and the socket ends up wherever the electrician found it convenient. That is how a scent machine finishes up inside an entrance lobby where street air pushes past it, or directly under an air-conditioning diffuser that scatters its output immediately. Deciding the location at design stage, in the occupied zone and out of both the door draught and the supply airstream, is a five-minute conversation that prevents a permanent compromise.
03
The thing to delay
The fragrance, not the provisions
A new building smells of itself for weeks - paint, adhesives, sealants, new joinery, carpet, upholstery - and in a region building as fast as Amaravati there is usually site dust as well. Introducing fragrance into that produces two smells and reads as concealment to exactly the visitors you are trying to impress. Ventilate properly, let the materials finish, and start the scent when the space genuinely smells of nothing. That is usually weeks after opening, and there is no harm in the delay.
Tip: Install the provisions at fit-out. Start the fragrance later.
The SOSA principle
Put the socket in now and decide about the fragrance later. The provision costs almost nothing if you never use it.
Retrofitting through a finished ceiling costs a great deal more than a socket.
SOSA Hotel Collection diffuser fragrance
What the machine runs on Hotel Collection diffuser fragrance from ₹299 Seven scents in 15ml, 100ml and 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

What to introduce, and when

When the time comes, choose a register you intend to keep, because a new business has the rare advantage of being able to start consistent rather than having to change.

Scent Why it suits the mood
At design stage Power point, mounting position, HVAC provision, location, service route
On the drawings HVAC-carried scenting is a mechanical decision, not a furniture one
Not at fit-out The fragrance itself - the building is still releasing its own smell
At switch-on Once the space genuinely smells of nothing, usually weeks after opening

Why the delay matters is explained in the construction odour chapter, the specific case of a sales gallery opening during construction is in the experience centre chapter, and whether to launch with a signature from day one is in the sales gallery chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar
Option Right for What it actually is Price
Reed diffusers One small room, no power point, no maintenance Alcohol-free reed oil, passive, silent. Good for a single cabin or a small front desk, not for a hall from ₹749
Boond / Sukoon ultrasonic A desk, a single cabin, a small reception Water-based cool mist; runs on Hotel Collection fragrance, adds a little humidity to the room ₹899 / ₹1,899
Megh ultrasonic (6L) A larger waiting area where visible mist is wanted 6L tank, water-based. Still a room machine rather than a floor machine ₹3,499
SOSA Vaayu Reception, lounge, corridor, a contained showroom floor Waterless cold-air, up to 1000m³ (about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank, app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38 dB, key-lock for public areas ₹11,999
SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes for new commercial spaces: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Construction dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are resolved by ventilation and time, not by fragrance - introducing a scent over them masks a condition rather than finishing it, and visitors generally recognise the difference. Ceiling height and glazing change the air volume and the thermal behaviour of a new building substantially, so sizing is done from drawings and measurements rather than floor area. SOSA makes no claim that scenting influences sales or enquiry conversion. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

New buildings are the only case where I tell people to think about scent before the fit-out rather than after, and it is a practical point rather than a romantic one: if a building is going to be scented at all, that belongs in the HVAC conversation while the ceiling is still open. Retrofitting around finished plaster is how a simple decision becomes an expensive one.

But there is a trap in new construction, and it is the one I see most in fast-building regions. A new space smells of itself - curing paint, adhesives, new textiles, site dust drifting in. Putting fragrance on top of that is not scenting, it is masking, and visitors read it accurately. Let the building finish off-gassing, ventilate properly, then introduce a scent you intend to keep.

Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions

Should scenting be designed alongside the interior?
The provisions yes, the fragrance no. A power point, mounting position, HVAC provision, sensible location and a service route are cheap now and awkward to retrofit.
When should the fragrance actually start?
After the building has finished off-gassing. Paint, adhesives, sealants, joinery and textiles release for weeks, and fragrance over that is masking rather than scenting.
What should I tell the fit-out team?
Where the machine will sit, that it needs power and refill access, whether it is freestanding or wall-mounted, and whether the HVAC should carry the scent.
What if we decide not to scent after all?
Then you have an unused socket and a mounting point, which cost nothing. The asymmetry between provisioning now and retrofitting later is the whole argument.
Which machine goes on the mechanical drawings?
An Aangan at Rs 25,999 mounts to the HVAC and belongs on them. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is freestanding or wall-mounted and needs only a power point. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the sizing and zoning method applies whatever equipment a business finally buys.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. In new construction, dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are addressed by ventilation and time; ambient fragrance introduced over them masks a condition rather than resolving it. Ceiling height and glazing materially change a building's air volume and thermal behaviour, so sizing is carried out from drawings and site measurements rather than floor area.
