Founder Diaries · Jewellery Store Scent Marketing

Monsoon does two things to a showroom's air, and only one of them is about fragrance. It raises humidity, which changes how a fixed setting reads. And it produces damp, which is a building problem that must never be scented over.
Quick answers — read this first
How should a jewellery store manage fragrance during monsoon? Reduce slightly rather than increase, since humid air with doors kept shut holds fragrance longer and the same setting reads heavier. Separately, treat any damp or musty smell as a building problem to be found and fixed at the source rather than as something to be scented over.

Why does a store smell stronger during monsoon? Because doors stay closed, air exchange with the outside falls, and humid air holds fragrance in the space longer. The system is delivering the same amount into an environment that retains more of it, so the perceived level rises without anything being changed.

What should a jewellery store do about a musty smell in monsoon? Find the source - damp behind a display run, a storage area, a wall junction, poor drainage or wet packaging material - and fix it. Musty smells are moisture and microbial growth, and fragrance layered over them produces two smells and a customer who begins looking for the first.
The short answer
Short answer: two monsoon effects: humidity makes a fixed setting read heavier because doors stay shut and exchange falls, so reduce rather than increase; and damp is a building problem to be found and fixed at the source, never scented over. Wet footfall loads the entrance zone and storage suffers before anybody notices. Vaayu Rs 11,999; WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
Straight answer
What changes about scenting during the monsoon?
Two things, and only one of them is a scenting decision. 1. Humidity makes the same setting read heavier - so reduce. During monsoon, doors stay shut, air exchange with the outside falls, and humid air holds fragrance in a space longer than dry air does. The system is delivering the same amount into an environment that retains more of it, and the store reads stronger without anybody having changed anything. A small downward adjustment, recorded and reversed after the season, is the correct response - and it is the opposite of the festival-season instinct, which is worth noting since the two periods can overlap. Consumption also tends to run lower for the same reason. 2. Damp is a building problem and must never be scented over. This is the more important half. A musty smell is moisture and microbial growth with a physical location, and the locations are predictable: behind or beneath display runs against an external wall, in a storage area, at a wall or floor junction, near drainage at the rear, in a washroom with poor ventilation, or in packaging material that has absorbed humidity. Each has a fix. None of them is fragrance - scenting over a musty smell produces two smells, and in a trust-led category it invites the question of what is being covered, which is the one thought you cannot afford a jewellery customer to have. 3. Wet footfall loads the entrance. Umbrellas, wet floors and mats bring their own smell into the zone customers meet first, and the fixes are housekeeping ones: a proper umbrella arrangement outside the display area, mats changed rather than left to sit wet, and floors dried rather than only mopped. 4. Storage and packaging suffer quietly. Boxes, tissue and card absorb humidity, and stock that will be handed to a customer in three weeks is sitting in it now. Keep packaging off floors, in closed containers, in the driest available space. System unchanged: Vaayu ₹11,999, Boond ₹799 where needed, refills from ₹999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. One line: humid air with doors shut holds fragrance longer, so reduce slightly rather than increase - and treat damp as a building problem to find and fix, never to cover. Watch the entrance and the packaging store. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

The monsoon protocol

The three monsoon realities - the humidity adjustment, the damp rule, and the places that suffer first.

Why this works
Two monsoon effects, and only one is a fragrance question
1 Humidity: the same setting reads heavier, and doors stay shut 2 Damp: a building problem - find the source, never cover it 3 Wet footfall brings its own load into the entrance zone 4 Storage and packaging suffer before anybody notices
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
1
The humidity adjustment
Reduce, which is counter-intuitive
Most seasonal advice in retail scenting points upward - busier periods, more traffic, more air exchange - and monsoon points the other way, which is why stores frequently get it wrong. Three things combine. Doors that stay closed against rain reduce exchange with the outside dramatically compared with a dry season when a street door may be effectively open all day. Air conditioning in humid conditions runs in a mode that recirculates more than it draws fresh, further reducing exchange. And humid air itself retains fragrance in a space longer than dry air. The result is a store delivering the same output into an environment that holds considerably more of it, which reads as a heavier atmosphere and, at the extreme, as a store that has been over-scented - even though nothing was changed. The correct response is a small deliberate downward adjustment, recorded so it can be reversed when the season ends. It is also worth watching consumption, which typically falls during the same period, so refill dates may extend slightly rather than shortening as they do in a festival season.
Tip: nothing changed, and the store reads heavier - because the air is now keeping what you gave it.
2
The damp rule
Find it, fix it, never cover it
A musty smell is not an atmospheric condition; it is moisture with microbial growth in it, sitting in a specific physical location, and the only useful response is to find and resolve the location. In Indian jewellery showrooms the usual suspects are consistent: the back of a display run standing against an external wall where condensation collects and never dries, a storage area where cardboard and packing material absorb humidity, a floor or wall junction where water tracks in, drainage at the rear of the premises, a washroom whose extraction discharges into a corridor or does not work, and any area that stays closed and unventilated for long periods. Scenting over any of these is the single most damaging thing a jewellery store can do with fragrance, for a reason specific to the category: a customer who half-notices something beneath a fragrance starts wondering what is being covered, and in a business that runs entirely on trust, that is the most expensive thought available. It is also self-defeating, because musty smells return the moment the fragrance dips, and the customer who returns is now looking.
3
Where it shows first
The entrance, the store room and the packaging
Three parts of a showroom deteriorate before anybody notices during a wet season. The entrance zone takes the direct load: wet umbrellas, dripping floors, mats that stay damp all day and shoes bringing water in. This is the first thing customers experience and the easiest to improve, and the fixes are housekeeping rather than atmospheric - an umbrella arrangement outside the display area, mats changed rather than left, floors dried rather than merely mopped, and enough drying time. The storage area is the second: cardboard, packing material and any fabric absorb humidity and develop a note that migrates onto the floor every time the door opens, which reads as intermittent and is more noticeable than a constant background. The third is packaging stock, and it matters commercially rather than atmospherically: boxes, tissue and card sitting in a damp store now will be handed to customers in three weeks, and a box that smells faintly of damp is a poor ending to an expensive purchase. Keep packaging off floors, in sealed containers, in the driest space available, and rotate stock so nothing sits for a full season.
Tip: the box you hand over in three weeks is absorbing your store room's monsoon right now.
The SOSA principle
Monsoon does two things: humidity makes a fixed setting read heavier, and damp creates a building problem - and only the first is a scenting decision.
Reduce slightly, and find the damp rather than covering it - because a covered smell is the one thought a jewellery customer cannot be allowed to have.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Should we increase the fragrance to deal with monsoon dampness in the air?
No - it is the wrong response to both halves of the monsoon problem. General humidity makes the store read heavier rather than lighter, so increasing produces an over-scented space precisely when the air is already retaining more. And a specific damp smell is a source problem that fragrance cannot resolve and should not attempt, because layering produces two smells and invites the masking suspicion. The correct sequence is to find and fix any source, improve ventilation and drying where possible, and then adjust the fragrance level slightly downward for the season. If the store genuinely smells musty despite no findable source, the likely explanation is a broader ventilation problem - a space that is not exchanging air enough - which is worth addressing mechanically rather than atmospherically.
Our store room smells of damp cardboard every monsoon. What is the fix?
Reduce what is stored, raise it off the floor, and ventilate the room. Cardboard and packing material are hygroscopic and will absorb humidity from any poorly ventilated space, developing the characteristic note that then migrates onto the floor whenever the door opens. Practical measures in order of effect: hold less packaging stock during the wet months and reorder more frequently, keep everything on shelving rather than on the floor where moisture tracks in, use sealed containers for tissue and card, improve the room's own air movement even if only with a small fan on a timer, and keep the door closed by default so migration is limited. A small unit inside the store room is containment rather than a solution and should only follow the physical measures, never replace them.
Wet umbrellas at the entrance are unavoidable. Anything we can do?
Several things, none of them atmospheric. Position an umbrella stand or holder outside the display area rather than inside it, ideally in a covered entrance recess if one exists, so that water is not brought across the sales floor. Use mats that can be changed rather than left in place all day, since a saturated mat becomes its own source, and change them on a schedule during heavy days rather than at closing. Dry the floor rather than only mopping, because a wet floor evaporates into the entrance air continuously and adds to the load. And check where the water goes - an entrance that drains poorly and holds standing water at the threshold is a recurring source. These are housekeeping measures and they improve the first impression far more than any adjustment to the fragrance would.
Does high humidity affect the diffuser itself?
The practical question worth asking is about the environment around the unit rather than the humidity in general - keep it out of direct contact with damp, away from a wall that is carrying moisture, and off the floor in any area prone to water ingress, which is sensible siting for any equipment in a monsoon climate. A waterless system has the advantage in humid conditions of not adding moisture to a space that is already carrying plenty, which is one reason it suits showrooms during this season specifically, and it is a point worth weighing if you are choosing between systems in a coastal or high-rainfall location. If you have specific concerns about your building's conditions, mention them with the enquiry and the siting can be specified against them: WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
How do we tell the difference between general monsoon mustiness and a real damp problem?
Location and persistence. A general seasonal heaviness is spread evenly across the space, appears with the weather and lifts when conditions improve, and is really a ventilation and humidity question. A real damp problem is localised - stronger in one corner, behind one display run, near one wall or on approaching the store room - and it persists regardless of the weather on a given day. The diagnostic is a walk with a reset nose, going deliberately close to the suspect places rather than through the middle of the floor: behind display runs on external walls, at floor and wall junctions, near the washroom, at the rear where drainage runs, and inside the storage area. Anything you find localised is a building repair. Anything general is ventilation. Neither is a fragrance problem, though both change how the fragrance behaves.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any jewellery brand's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
