A musty store has a source, and the source is almost always in one of eight places. Find it, fix it, dry it, ventilate it - and only then scent. Every order other than that one produces a store that smells of two things and a customer wondering about the first.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you fix a jewellery store that smells musty? Find the source before adding anything. The eight usual places: behind display runs on external walls, the storage area, washroom venting, drainage at the rear, wall and floor junctions, air conditioning drip trays and ducts, unused or closed rooms, and packaging stock. Fix, dry, ventilate, and scent only afterwards.
Why should you not use fragrance to cover a musty smell? Because layering produces two smells rather than one, the musty note returns whenever the fragrance dips, and in a category built on trust it invites the customer to wonder what is being covered - which is the most expensive thought a jewellery customer can have.
What is the most common source of mustiness in a showroom? The back of a display run standing against an external wall, where condensation collects, air never moves and nothing dries. It is invisible during trading, it is rarely cleaned behind, and it is the first place to check.
The short answer
Short answer: find the source before adding anything: behind display runs on external walls, storage, washroom venting, drainage, wall and floor junctions, air conditioning trays, closed rooms, and packaging stock. Then fix, dry, ventilate, and scent only afterwards - covering produces two smells and invites the masking question. Vaayu Rs 11,999; WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
Work the eight places, in this order, before anything is added to the air. 1. Behind display runs on external walls. The most common source by a distance: a fitted run standing against an outside wall creates a cavity where condensation collects, air never moves and nothing dries. Nobody cleans behind it because nobody can see behind it. Check first. 2. The storage area. Cardboard, packing material and fabric absorb humidity and develop a note that migrates onto the floor every time the door opens. 3. Washroom venting. Extraction that discharges into a corridor, or does not work at all, puts the whole problem into your circulation. 4. Drainage at the rear. Traps that dry out, gullies near a back door, anything connected to the building's waste. 5. Wall and floor junctions. Where water tracks in during monsoon and stays. 6. Air conditioning drip trays and ducts. Standing water in a tray and moisture in ducting are both classic sources, and both are serviceable rather than permanent. 7. Closed and unused rooms. Any space shut for weeks develops its own air, which arrives on the floor the moment the door opens. 8. Packaging stock. The boxes you will hand customers next month are absorbing whatever your store room has now. Then the order of work, which never changes: find, fix, dry, ventilate, scent. Fragrance is the last step and it is a finish on clean air - adding it earlier produces a store that smells of two things and a customer who starts looking for the first one, which in a trust-led business is the outcome to avoid above all others. Once the space is genuinely clean, a Vaayu (₹11,999) with a congruent register (from ₹299) and a Boond (₹799) in any enclosed area completes it. The diagnostic walk
The three parts of fixing it - locating the source, doing the work in order, and knowing when scenting is finally appropriate.
Why this works
Eight places, and one order of work
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
Finding a musty source requires a different walk from the usual evenness check. The monthly walk-through follows the customer path through the middle of the space; a source hunt goes deliberately to the edges and the closed places, because that is where moisture sits. Reset the nose outside for ten minutes, then go close to each suspect in turn and stay there: kneel at the base of a display run against an external wall, open the storage door and stand inside for a minute rather than glancing in, stand in the washroom with the door closed, go to the rear where drainage runs, check the floor-wall junctions on any wall that gets weather, and open any room that has been shut. Note where it is strongest rather than where you first notice it, since a smell detected in the middle of a floor is usually being carried from an edge. Timing helps too: musty sources are typically strongest first thing in the morning before the space has been ventilated by a day's trading, which makes the pre-opening hour the best time to hunt.
Tip: a smell you notice in the middle of the floor is almost always being carried there from an edge.
2
The order of work
Find, fix, dry, ventilate, scent
The sequence matters more than any individual step, and reordering it is the mistake that turns a maintenance problem into a credibility problem. Find comes first because a fix applied to the wrong place wastes effort and leaves the source running. Fix means addressing the physical cause - a leak, a failed trap, a duct, a vent discharging into the wrong place, water ingress at a junction - rather than cleaning the symptom, since cleaning a damp patch that is being re-wetted achieves a few days. Dry is the step most often skipped and it is the one that determines whether the smell returns: a cavity, a wall base or a store room that has been wet needs genuine drying time with air movement, not merely the removal of visible water. Ventilate establishes ongoing exchange so the conditions do not simply rebuild, which in an older building may mean a fan, a serviced extraction, or a procedural change like keeping a door open. Only then does scent belong, as a finish on air that is already clean. A store that runs the sequence properly finds the fragrance works better as well, because it is no longer competing with anything.

Why covering is the worst option
Specifically in this category
There is a general reason not to mask smells and a specific reason for jewellery. The general reason is practical: masking works for a period and then fails, because the source continues producing and the fragrance level varies, so the smell reappears intermittently - which is more noticeable than a constant background and reads as an unmanaged space rather than a slightly damp one. The specific reason is about what a jewellery customer is doing in your store. They are being asked to accept a series of claims they cannot verify - about metal, weight, work, stones and terms - and they are reading everything observable as evidence about the things they cannot check. A space where something is evidently being covered is a data point in exactly the wrong direction, and it is one of the few environmental signals that actively damages rather than merely failing to help. The customer does not conclude that the store has a damp problem; they conclude, vaguely and unhelpfully, that this is a place where things are managed rather than shown. That is a costly impression to create in exchange for postponing a repair.
Tip: they do not conclude you have a damp problem. They conclude this is a place where things are managed rather than shown.
The SOSA principle
A musty store has a source in one of eight predictable places - and the order of work is always find, fix, dry, ventilate, then scent.
Covering it produces two smells, an intermittent return, and the one thought a jewellery customer must never have.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
We cannot find the source. What now?
Widen the search in three directions before concluding there is nothing. First, time: check at the pre-opening hour, since musty sources are strongest before a day's trading has ventilated the space, and also after a closed weekend or a holiday period when the building has been shut. Second, access: the source is frequently in a place that cannot be reached without moving something - behind fitted furniture, under a raised floor section, above a false ceiling, or inside a duct - and a proper check may require lifting a panel rather than looking. Third, the building beyond your unit: a shared service riser, a neighbouring premises, a common corridor or an upstairs leak can all deliver a smell into your space without any source inside it, and that is a landlord or association conversation rather than a repair you can make. If a genuine search turns up nothing localised, the likely answer is general ventilation rather than a source, which is a mechanical fix.
Can we scent the store while the repair is being done?
Keep it at the normal level rather than raising it, and be realistic about what it is doing during that period. The repair may take weeks, particularly if it involves drying time or a building contractor, and the store still has to trade - so running the system as usual is reasonable. What must not happen is dosing forward to compensate, which is the masking behaviour this article warns against and which becomes visible the moment the level dips. Where the affected area is localised, it is often better to reduce customer exposure to it - repositioning a display, closing a room, rerouting the customer path - than to try to overcome it atmospherically. And once the repair is complete, allow proper drying and ventilation before assessing whether the smell has actually gone, since a freshly repaired area can read as resolved while still holding moisture.
Our air conditioning smells musty when it starts up. Is that the source?
Very likely, and it is a serviceable problem rather than a permanent one. The characteristic pattern - a musty note strongest in the first minutes after the system starts, then fading - points to moisture in the unit or ducting: a drip tray holding standing water, a condensate line that is blocked or has dried out, a filter that has stayed damp, or growth within the ducting itself. All of those are addressed by servicing rather than by anything you can do atmospherically, and the fix is usually straightforward for whoever maintains the system. It is worth treating as a priority rather than an annoyance, because an air conditioning system is a distribution mechanism: whatever is in it gets delivered evenly to the whole store, which makes it the one source capable of affecting every space at once.
The smell is only in one consultation room. What is likely?
A room that is closed for long periods with poor ventilation, which is the standard profile of a consultation room outside trading hours, and the usual causes are the same list at a smaller scale: an external wall behind fitted furniture, a floor junction, moisture in the room's own air conditioning provision, or simply insufficient air exchange for a sealed space. Check the room in the morning before it is opened, which is when it will be at its worst. The remedies are proportionate: improve exchange even modestly with a door left open between sessions or a small fan on a timer, check whether the room's air conditioning has its own drip tray or condensate issue, and look behind whatever furniture stands against an outside wall. Since consultation rooms are where your largest decisions happen, this is worth resolving faster than a comparable problem on the floor.
How long after fixing it should we wait before judging?
Give it two weeks of normal trading with proper ventilation before deciding whether the problem is resolved, and check with a reset nose in the pre-opening hour rather than mid-afternoon. The reason for the wait is drying: materials that have been damp - plaster, board, timber, fabric - continue releasing as they dry, so a repaired area can still smell for a period after the cause is fixed, and judging too early leads to unnecessary further work or to a premature conclusion that the repair failed. If the smell is materially reduced and continuing to fade, the fix is working. If it is unchanged after two weeks of dry conditions, either the source was misidentified or there is a second one. Only once the space reads clean is it worth setting the fragrance level, and it should be set fresh rather than restored to whatever it was before.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any jewellery brand's systems.
Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
