Founder Diaries · Reader Question · Volume, Not Floor Area
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Yes, and more than most people expect. A reed diffuser fills a volume of air, not a floor plan — so the number that decides how strongly it reads is your floor area multiplied by your ceiling height, and older Indian buildings hide a great deal of that height overhead. A 350 sq ft room under a builder-standard ten-foot ceiling holds 3,500 cubic feet. The same room under an old twelve-foot ceiling holds 4,200 — which is the air of a 420 sq ft flat, because 4,200 ÷ 10 = 420. You have not bought a small-flat problem; you have bought a medium-flat one with the extra space stacked above your head. The lever is reeds, not size — seven or eight instead of six. And because more reeds drink the bottle faster, this is the one situation where a small flat genuinely wants the 130ml at ₹1,349.
Quick answers — read this first
Yes — ceiling height changes everything about how a room reads. Multiply area by height. A twelve-foot ceiling holds a fifth more air than a ten-foot one over the same floor; 12 ÷ 10 = 1.2.

The fix is reed count, not bottle size. Seven or eight reeds instead of six raises what enters the room. Size cannot: at equal reeds, a 130ml and a 50ml project identically.

Buy the 130ml anyway, and this is the reason. Eight reeds empties a 50ml at ₹749 well inside its 6–8 weeks. The 130ml at ₹1,349 makes the higher reed count affordable.

Do not raise the bottle to "fill" the room. Waist-to-chest height, as always. The top third of a tall room is air nobody breathes, and putting the bottle up there donates your fragrance to it.
The short answer
Short answer: measure your ceiling, multiply, and buy for the volume you actually have. For a 300–400 sq ft 1BHK under an eleven- to thirteen-foot ceiling: one Fresh Brew 130ml at ₹1,349, seven or eight reeds rather than six, standing at waist-to-chest height on an inner wall, on a tray. Fresh Brew because at 9.5 it is the fullest composition in the range on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard.
The mechanism: oil climbs six fibre reeds by capillary action and evaporates off the exposed length at a low, roughly fixed rate. That output then disperses into whatever volume of air surrounds it, and concentration is output divided by volume. Adding three feet of ceiling adds cubic feet without adding a single square foot of floor, so the same bottle is diluted into more air and reads fainter. Raising the output means raising the exposed reed surface, which means more reeds. Nothing about a larger reservoir changes the calculation — it changes how long the calculation holds.
Straight answer
Does ceiling height change how strong a reed diffuser feels in a small flat?
1. Yes. You are scenting cubic feet, and height is a multiplier on every square foot you own. Floor area alone is why a "small" flat can read as under-scented: 350 sq ft under a twelve-foot ceiling is 4,200 cubic feet, the same air as 420 sq ft under ten.

2. Old buildings are where this bites. Builder-standard modern ceilings run around nine to ten feet. Older flats, colonial-era conversions and pre-war buildings frequently run eleven to thirteen. Nobody sells you those cubic metres, and nobody warns you that you have to scent them.

3. The lever is reed count. Seven or eight reeds instead of six raises what enters the room, because output is a function of exposed reed surface. It is the only genuine volume control the product has.

4. Reed count costs bottle life roughly in proportion. Nine reeds runs a 50ml down in about five weeks rather than eight; ten in about four to five. That is the price of the extra output, and it is worth paying.

5. Which is exactly why a small tall flat should buy the 130ml. Not for reach — at equal reeds it projects identically to a 50ml — but so that running eight reeds still leaves you a long run rather than a monthly repurchase. Fresh Brew 130ml ₹1,349, or Mountain Breeze at the same price if you want dry rather than warm.

6. Keep the bottle at waist-to-chest height regardless. The instinct in a tall room is to lift it. Resist it: the upper third of a high room is air you never breathe, and a bottle on a tall shelf is scenting the ceiling.

TL;DR: multiply floor area by ceiling height. A tall small flat is a medium flat with the extra space overhead, so run seven or eight reeds instead of six and buy the 130ml at ₹1,349 so the higher reed count does not cost you a bottle a month. Keep it at waist-to-chest, never on a high shelf.
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuser 130ml for a small flat with high ceilings
The fullest composition, for the largest volume of air
SOSA Fresh Brew · Coorg coffee & Kerala vanilla ₹1,349 / 130ml
Roasted coffee over Kerala vanilla, and the fullest thing we make — 9.5 on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, our scale rather than an industry standard and not a ranking of quality. In a room with several hundred extra cubic feet stacked above head height, a composition with weight holds its shape better than a light one, which thins as it disperses. The 130ml is the size to buy for one reason: you will run seven or eight reeds, and that costs bottle life roughly in proportion. Fourteen to eighteen weeks at six becomes a shorter but still sensible run at eight, where a 50ml at ₹849 would be gone in about a month. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds supplied — fibre rather than rattan, because rattan pores clog in Indian humidity. Alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier. Flip weekly with gloves, out of direct sun, on a tray.

Part one — why height counts more than you think

Every coverage figure you have ever read for a home fragrance is quoted in square feet, and every one of them silently assumes a ceiling. That assumption is roughly nine or ten feet, because that is what modern Indian builders pour. If your flat predates that convention, the figures are not wrong so much as answering a different question from the one your room is asking.

1
THE MULTIPLIER · HEIGHT APPLIES TO EVERY SQUARE FOOT AT ONCE
Three extra feet overhead is not a detail; it is a third more room to fill
Concentration is output divided by volume, and volume is area times height. A change in ceiling height does not add a corner to the room — it scales the whole thing. Thirteen feet over ten is 13 ÷ 10 = 1.3, a third more air from the same floor plan. A 300 sq ft studio at 10 ft holds 3,000 cubic feet; the same studio at 13 ft holds 3,900, the air of a 390 sq ft flat. You are not paying rent on that 390, and no floor plan shows it. It is above your head, it is real, and the bottle has to fill it before anything reads.
The sum: floor area × ceiling height ÷ 10 gives the equivalent floor area at a standard ceiling. Buy for that number.
2
THE DEAD ZONE · THE TOP OF A TALL ROOM IS NOT YOURS
Warm air rises, and the instinct to lift the bottle is exactly the wrong one
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser, dry pine and cedar, for a tall roomMountain Breeze₹849 · 50mlA tall room is warmer at the top than at the bottom, and the band of air you actually live in runs from the floor to about standing head height. Everything above that is volume you are diluting into and never breathing. So the sensible response is not to chase it — you cannot win a fight with three hundred cubic feet of ceiling air — but to keep the bottle firmly inside the band you occupy. Waist-to-chest, on a console or sideboard, with clear air around the reeds. The common mistake in high-ceilinged flats is the opposite: the bottle goes on top of a tall bookcase or a loft ledge "so it spreads from up there", which puts the source in the dead zone and takes it out of the seated breathing height entirely. Two feet lower is often the entire fix, and it is free.
The test: sit where you normally sit. If the bottle is above your standing eyeline, it is too high.
3
THE LEVER · REEDS, AND WHY THE BIG BOTTLE FOLLOWS
The only case in this whole range where a small flat should buy the 130ml
Reed count is the one genuine volume control a passive diffuser has: more exposed fibre in the air means more fragrance leaving per hour. Six is our calibration for an ordinary room. In a tall room seven or eight is the setting, added one at a time with a few days between so you can hear what each one does. The cost is duration, roughly in proportion — nine reeds runs a 50ml down in about five weeks rather than eight. That trade is what makes the 130ml the right buy here despite its projecting no further: you are not buying reach, you are buying the ability to run a higher reed count without repurchasing every month. It is the one place in this cluster where I tell a small flat to spend ₹1,349 rather than ₹849.

Part two — your flat in cubic feet

Find the row closest to your own room. The third column is the number to shop by, because it converts your flat into the units every coverage figure is quoted in.

Area × height · what your flat actually holds
Six small flats, their true air volume, and what each one takes
Floor area and ceiling Air volume (area × height) The same air at a 10 ft ceiling What to run
350 sq ft × 12 ft — the classic older 1BHK ★ 4,200 cubic feet 420 sq ft 130ml, seven or eight reeds
250 sq ft × 9 ft — a compact modern studio 2,250 cubic feet 225 sq ft 50ml, six reeds. Nothing more
300 sq ft × 10 ft — builder standard 3,000 cubic feet 300 sq ft 50ml or 130ml, six reeds — a duration choice
300 sq ft × 13 ft — a pre-war conversion 3,900 cubic feet 390 sq ft 130ml, eight reeds
400 sq ft × 12 ft — a tall one-room flat 4,800 cubic feet 480 sq ft 130ml, eight reeds, and accept a level rather than a statement
450 sq ft × 14 ft — a mezzanine or double-height room 6,300 cubic feet 630 sq ft Past the honest ceiling for one bottle — two sources, or a machine
The honest caveat: these are arithmetic, not measurements — area × height, with the third column divided by ten to express the same air as a standard-ceiling floor plan. Real rooms have alcoves, lofts, beams and open doorways that make the true figure approximate, and the reeds-to-volume guidance is our own calibration rather than a specification. Reed counts above six shorten bottle life roughly in proportion, and the 6–8 and 14–18 week ranges assume six reeds. None of this makes a reed diffuser do anything about air quality: it adds a fragrance alongside whatever is already in the room and cleans, purifies and removes nothing.

Two bottles with enough weight for a tall room, and the refill that pays for the reeds
The SOSA principle
Square feet is a floor plan. Cubic feet is what you are actually scenting, and ceiling height is the multiplier nobody puts on the label.
Raise the reed count, not the bottle. The top of a tall room is air you will never breathe and should never chase.

Part three — what height does not explain

Before adding reeds and spending ₹1,349, rule out the two things that produce the same complaint for nothing. The first is the settling curve. A new bottle is loudest in its first three days — freshly soaked reeds, the lightest top notes leaving at once — then settles to a plateau that holds until the oil is gone. The plateau is the product; the spike was never the baseline. If your tall room felt right for a weekend and quiet afterwards, that may be an ordinary settle rather than a ceiling problem. The second is your own nose: you stop registering a constant fragrance in a room you live in, and no technique resets that. Leave the flat for an hour and judge the first breath at the door.

Height also has a limit past which no reed diffuser is the right tool. A double-height living room, a mezzanine, or a tall room whose volume works out past roughly 250–300 sq ft of standard-ceiling equivalent is asking a passive product to do something it was not built for, and the answer is not a third bottle. Two sources at opposite ends beat one bottle in the middle, because output per bottle is fixed — but if you want the room noticeably scented at a particular hour, that is a request for control rather than strength, and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest recommendation: 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, remote and timers. It aerosolises water, so it adds moisture where a reed diffuser adds none, and it takes only the water-based Hotel Collection — reed oil never goes in a machine, machine fragrance never in a reed bottle. A Megh at ₹3,499 looks like the answer for a big volume and is not: about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon, a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade.

One last thing that height genuinely does not change: the oil itself, and how you look after it. Flip all six — or eight — reeds weekly, wearing gloves, and keep the bottle out of direct sunlight and away from a heat source. A tall old flat often has tall windows to match, and afternoon sun on the glass empties a bottle faster than any ceiling. Stand it on a tray; the oil marks wood and stone. And refill rather than replace — the 300ml at ₹2,399 or the 500ml at ₹3,499 work out at roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml, which matters more at eight reeds than at six. Refills are oil only: you keep your own glass and reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately, so look after them.

Nobody measures upwards when they buy home fragrance. In an old building, upwards is where a third of your flat is hiding.

Part four — your tall room, by size

Six versions of a small flat with a generous ceiling, and what each one should do.

You are testing before committing Fresh Brew 50ml Seven reeds, and expect roughly five weeks rather than eight ₹849

Double-height or mezzanine, past 250–300 sq ft equivalent Two sources, or a Sukoon for timed control Opposite ends; the machine on a side table ₹1,899 · it adds moisture, reeds add none
Honest notes for buyers: a reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. It adds no moisture; ultrasonic machines deliver fragrance by aerosolising water and therefore do. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 weeks for 130ml — assume six reeds and are typical ranges rather than guarantees; higher reed counts shorten them roughly in proportion. Volume figures are arithmetic on area and height, not measurements, and ceiling heights described are typical rather than surveyed. Warmth raises the evaporation rate and moving air carries vapour away; both are directions of effect. Size is the duration control and reed count the volume control; a bigger bottle buys weeks, never metres. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser — the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. Refills are oil only, so you reuse your own vessel and reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon — a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame, out of direct sunlight, on a tray, and out of reach of children and pets. SOSA reed diffuser oil-only refill for a high-ceilinged flat running extra reeds
What running eight reeds costs, and how to afford it
SOSA reed diffuser refill · oil only ₹2,399 / 300ml · ₹3,499 / 500ml
Extra reeds are the correct answer for a tall room and they are not free — output and consumption move together, so a bottle at eight reeds finishes sooner than the same bottle at six. The refill is what turns that from an expensive habit into a sensible one: roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml for a fresh 50ml bottle, which is up to about 55% less. The 300ml runs roughly 8–11 months at six reeds and the 500ml roughly 14–18, both shorter if you are running more. It is oil only — no glass, no reeds — so you keep the vessel you already own. Replacement reeds are not sold separately, which is an honest gap in the range; my guidance is to refresh them every few months and to treat the reeds as the consumable rather than the oil, since most people do exactly the reverse. The method takes a minute: lift the reeds out, pour to the neck, put them back, flip once so both ends are coated.

A note from Sonal

I once spent a fortnight convinced a batch had gone wrong. A composition that read beautifully in our workroom went almost silent in a friend's flat, and I carried three bottles across the city to test before I thought to look up. Her ceiling was over twelve feet. Mine was nine. The bottles were identical; the rooms were not, in a way no floor plan would have told me.

That is why this page exists. Coverage is quoted in square feet because square feet is what people know, and it works for the modern flats most of India lives in. It falls apart in older buildings — the conversions, the tall shuttered windows, the fan on a two-foot down-rod — where the volume is a third larger than the plan suggests and nobody has mentioned it.

The fix is unglamorous: two more reeds and a bigger bottle to carry them. I would rather tell you that than sell you a second bottle for a single room, and I would much rather you moved yours down from the shelf first and found out it was free. Made in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many reeds should I use with a twelve-foot ceiling?
Seven or eight in a 300–400 sq ft room, added one at a time with a few days between each so you can judge what it changes. Six is our calibration for an ordinary ceiling. Going beyond eight rarely helps in a flat this size and empties the bottle quickly — nine reeds runs a 50ml down in about five weeks rather than eight.
Should I put the diffuser higher up so it fills the room from above?
No, and this is the most common mistake in a tall flat. Waist-to-chest height, on a console or sideboard, with clear air around the reeds. The upper part of a high room is warmer air that nobody breathes; a bottle up there is diluting into the part of the volume you will never use.
Is a 130ml stronger than a 50ml in a high-ceilinged room?
No. At the same number of reeds the two project identically, because output comes from exposed reed surface rather than from the reservoir. The reason to buy the 130ml here is that a higher reed count consumes oil faster, and the larger bottle keeps that affordable. You are buying weeks, and using them on reeds.
Would two 50ml bottles be better than one 130ml in a tall room?
Only if the floor plan is also long. Two sources beat one when the distance across the space is the problem; extra reeds beat a second bottle when the height is the problem. A tall, compact room is a height problem: one bottle, more reeds. A tall, long room is both, and then two bottles at opposite ends with seven reeds each is the arrangement.
Does a ceiling fan make the high-ceiling problem worse?
It changes it rather than worsening it. A fan mixes the room, which distributes fragrance more evenly through the volume, but moving air also carries scent away from the bottle faster, so the level in the room reads lower and the bottle empties sooner. Keep the diffuser out of the direct downdraught and judge the room with the fan at its usual setting rather than off.
