Almost everybody who writes to me about this has done the same six things in the wrong order, and the wrong order begins with a question: what is your bestseller. That question has an answer, and the answer is a fact about other people. Start at the other end - with the list of things you will not wear - and the whole business gets shorter, cheaper and considerably more accurate.
Quick answers — read this first
Why has nothing worked so far? Almost always because of the order, not the taste. The usual sequence is: ask what is popular, smell the opening, buy the large bottle, wear it twice, give up. Every step of that is upside down. Popularity is information about other people. An opening is the part of a composition with the shortest stay. A large bottle makes being wrong expensive. And two wearings judge the first twenty minutes rather than the six hours you will actually live with. Reverse it and start from what you refuse - which is the one piece of information you already have and can check on a printed list.
What is the method, in one breath? Six steps. Write the dislike list in your own words, bottles included. Convert each line into a named material or a structure. Cross off the range - all four SOSA attars, then the perfume line. Buy one 3ml, at ₹379 to ₹399, and nothing larger. Wear it for a full day and judge the drydown rather than the opening. Then repeat once, choosing the second 3ml with what the first one taught you. Three of those steps cost nothing at all, and the whole thing can end in no attar, which is a legitimate result.
What does it cost to run properly?₹379 for the 3ml of Adaa is the usual first purchase, and ₹399 is the most any 3ml costs. Run twice, the method costs under ₹800 and teaches you two note lists. Compare that with the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - the three heaviest attars, Adaa excluded - or a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml is the sample size, and free shipping applies above ₹499.
The short answer
Short answer: six steps, in this order. One: write the dislike list in your own words, including every bottle you gave up on. Two: convert each line into a named material or a structure - sweet becomes vanilla, tonka, caramel and amber, powdery becomes iris, heliotrope, almond and soapy aldehyde, loud becomes dose rather than a note. Three: cross off the range. SOSA makes exactly four attars, three of them contain oud and only Adaa does not, and every one contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka. Four: buy one 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399, because SOSA sells no sampler and the 3ml is the sample. Five: wear it a full day and judge the drydown rather than the opening. Six: repeat once. Anyone who starts by asking what the bestseller is has started at the wrong end.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 as the first run of the method for most readers - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, alcohol-free, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Never the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 as a first purchase. And if your list rules out florals, oud and sweetness together, no SOSA attar survives and the honest route is SOSA Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml, an aquatic marine that is not an attar.
Next step: send me the dislike list untranslated, with the bottles you gave up on and roughly when each one went wrong in the day, and I will send back the crossing-out with the working shown - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Three of those six steps cost nothing and are done on paper before you spend a rupee. The fourth is the only one with a price on it, and it is the smallest price in the range.
SOSA Adaa - the usual first run of the method, and the cheapest way to be wrong
How does somebody who has hated most perfumes they have tried find an attar they actually love?
By running six steps in one particular order, and the order is the whole method. Step one: write the dislike list. Every note you will not wear and every bottle you gave up on, in your own words, with no attempt at perfume vocabulary. Step two: convert each line into a named material or a structure. Sweet becomes vanilla, tonka bean, caramel and amber. Powdery becomes iris or orris root, heliotrope, almond and soapy aldehyde. Fruity becomes red berry, stone fruit and tropical. Incense becomes frankincense, myrrh and labdanum; smoky becomes tobacco, leather and tar. Rose and oud need no translating. Loud, overwhelming and too much are not materials at all - they are structural, and they are answered by dose and format. Step three: cross off the range.SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab - and here is the arithmetic that governs everything: three of the four contain oud and only Adaa does not, and every one of the four contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka. So Mastani falls to vanilla, tonka, rose, jasmine or oudh; Ameeri to rose or oudh; Nawaab to oud, tobacco, leather or amber; Adaa to jasmine or neroli. A reader who rules out florals, oud and sweetness together has no SOSA attar, and that result is reported rather than repaired. Step four: buy one 3ml. ₹379 for Adaa, ₹385 Ameeri, ₹389 Mastani, ₹399 Nawaab. Not the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is the three heaviest attars with Adaa left out, and not a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml is the sample size, and that gap is the reason this step is worded so firmly. Step five: wear it for a full day and judge the drydown rather than the opening. One roll on one pulse point in the morning, then check at two hours and at five. The opening is the phase with the shortest stay; the base is what you live with, and the attars wear 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Step six: repeat once. Whatever the first 3ml taught you goes on the list, and the second 3ml is chosen with it. Two runs is under ₹800 and two note lists learned. Anybody who begins instead by asking what the bestseller is has started at the wrong end, because popularity is information about other people. Two standing disclosures: Adaa carries jasmine sambac and neroli, and SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind.Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the list untranslated.
Six steps in one direction: write the dislike list, convert each line into a note or a structure, cross off the range, buy one 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399, wear it a full day and judge the drydown rather than the opening, then repeat once. SOSA makes four attars, three carry oud, every one carries a floral or an oud or vanilla and tonka, and there is no sampler - so the 3ml is the sample.
The usual first run is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size because SOSA sells no sampler at all.
One attar for the usual first run of the method, and one honest route for the lists that leave no attar standing. Both cards link through to the listing, because the point of all six steps is that you can run them yourself on anybody's product page, ours included.
Bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base - the lightest of the four attars and the only one with no oud, no vanilla and no rose. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, with the 6ml at ₹669 and the 12ml at ₹1,149.
Not an attar. Our perfume line, named by SOSA name and accord only, and the accord is an aquatic marine - no flower, no fruit, no vanilla and no oud in it. It is here because a list that rules out florals, oud and sweetness together leaves no SOSA attar standing, and that has to have somewhere honest to go. ₹599 for 10ml.
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes in order: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, which puts a single dry musk in the base. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for any product. Published positioning: office hours and daytime weddings. No oud, no vanilla, no rose.
Grouped into three, because the six steps fall naturally into paper, purchase and patience. The first group costs nothing, and it is the group almost nobody does.
1
Steps one to three: do it on paper first
Write the list, convert it, then cross off - and none of that costs a rupee
Write down every note you will not wear and every bottle you gave up on, in your own words, and include roughly when each one went wrong in the day, because that tells me which layer you are objecting to. Then convert. Sweet is vanilla, tonka bean, caramel and amber. Powder is iris or orris root, heliotrope, almond and soapy aldehyde. Fruit is berry, stone fruit and tropical. Incense is frankincense, myrrh and labdanum. Smoke is tobacco, leather and tar. Rose and oud translate themselves. Then run the converted list down the published note lists and score each bottle by the number of lines it fails. Score, do not judge - and ignore the name, the photograph, the positioning and the price while you do it, because none of those tells you what is in the bottle.
Tip: Include when it went wrong. A bottle that was fine at ten and unbearable by four is a complaint about the base, not the top.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
The 3ml is the sample size, because there is no sampler - and being wrong at ₹379 is not a failure
SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set. That is a real gap in the range and I would rather state it than describe the Pack of 3 as something it is not: at ₹1,055 it is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at full size, which is the three heaviest attars we make with Adaa excluded, so it is the wrong first purchase twice over for most readers of this cluster. So the honest answer is one 3ml of one attar, at ₹379 to ₹399, chosen by the crossing-out rather than by appetite. The whole logic of step four is that a blind buy is only as reckless as it is large. Get it wrong at ₹379 and you have learned a material; get it wrong at ₹1,199 and you have learned the same material and bought eleven more millilitres of it.
Tip: Free shipping applies above ₹499, and a single 3ml sits below that - which is worth knowing rather than worth solving by adding a second bottle.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
Judge the drydown rather than the opening, then spend a second ₹379 on what the first one taught you
One roll on one pulse point in the morning. Check it at ten minutes, at two hours and at five, and make your decision on the last of those three, because the base is the part you will live with and the opening is the part with the shortest stay. Do not top up at lunch; your own nose stops attending to a fragrance long before anybody else's does. The attars wear 6-8 hours and that is the only figure SOSA publishes - nothing at all for the perfume line or the solids. Then run it once more. Whatever the first bottle taught you, whether a yes or a specific new no, goes onto the list, and the second 3ml is chosen against the updated version. Two runs, under ₹800, and two note lists you now understand.
One bottle of Samundar from ₹599 is the whole purchase here.
The method runs in one direction only - from what you will not wear, through the published note lists, to one small bottle - and it breaks the moment you start at the other end.
Which is why what is your bestseller is not a bad question so much as a last question, and almost everybody has been asking it first.
Steps one to three are free: The list, the conversion and the crossing-out all happen on paper, against four published note lists, before any money is involved.
Here are the six steps as a table, with what each one costs and what each one can return.
The SOSA shortlist
The six steps, what each decides, and what each costs
The step
What to do
1. Write the dislike list
Every note you will not wear and every bottle you gave up on, in your own words, with roughly when each one went wrong in the day. Costs nothing. Returns the only piece of information in this process that is genuinely about you.
2. Convert each line
Sweet becomes vanilla, tonka, caramel, amber. Powder becomes iris, orris root, heliotrope, almond, soapy aldehyde. Fruit becomes berry, stone fruit, tropical. Incense becomes frankincense, myrrh, labdanum. Smoke becomes tobacco, leather, tar. Loud is not a material at all.
3. Cross off the range
SOSA makes exactly four attars. Three contain oud and only Adaa does not, and every one contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka. Score each bottle by failed lines and ignore the name, the photograph and the positioning.
4. Buy ONE 3ml
₹379 Adaa, ₹385 Ameeri, ₹389 Mastani, ₹399 Nawaab. Not the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is the three heaviest with no Adaa, and not a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. SOSA sells no sampler, so the 3ml is the sample size.
5. Wear it a full day
One roll, one pulse point, checked at ten minutes, two hours and five hours - and the decision made on the last of those. The attars wear 6-8 hours, the only figure SOSA publishes. Nothing is published for the perfume line or the solids.
6. Repeat once, or stop
The second 3ml is chosen against the updated list. And if step three returned no attar - florals, oud and sweetness all ruled out - the honest route is Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml, which is not an attar, or buying nothing yet.
Step four has a price, and it is small: One 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 - SOSA Adaa is ₹379. Never the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, and never a 12ml first, because no sampler exists.
SOSA makes exactly four attars, and the whole method rests on the fact that all four publish their notes in order - you cannot cross off what has not been printed. Three of the four contain oud and only Adaa does not, and every one of them contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka, so some lists end with no attar at all. Below are the three honest destinations. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Most dislike lists, and every list with oud or sweetness on it
Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - the lightest of the four and the only one with no oud, no vanilla and no rose, with a single dry musk in the base. Wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml
A list that rules out bright, clean and soapy shapes rather than heavy ones
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, no synthetic oudh. The heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin, so it is chosen deliberately with all six notes read. ₹399 for the 3ml
A list that rules out florals, oud and sweetness together
An aquatic marine on the perfume line at ₹599 for 10ml, and not an attar. It is where the method lands when step three returns nothing, and no note list or wear figure is published for it
The method is the thing worth keeping from this page, because it works against any brand's listings including SOSA's own. SOSA makes exactly four attars; three of them contain oud and only Adaa does not; and every one contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka, so a reader who rules out all three has no SOSA attar and should be told so. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is the sample size, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size bottles with Adaa excluded. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never says how one smells and why they cannot be crossed off. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The letter that ends this cluster is the same one that starts it. Somebody writes to say they have tried fifteen perfumes and disliked fourteen of them, and by the end of the paragraph they are apologising, or wondering aloud whether something is wrong with their nose. Nothing is wrong with your nose. Fourteen dislikes is a decade of careful data collection, and the only thing that has gone wrong is the order of operations: every one of those bottles was chosen from the front of a shop, on a first impression of its first twenty minutes, in a size large enough to make being wrong expensive.
Turn it round. The materials that produce the complaints I receive can be listed on half a page - four sweet, four powdery, three fruit, three resins, three smoke, one oud, two flowers that do most of the work in this country. Your dislike list, converted into those names, becomes a filter. Four published note lists, five or six materials each, take about two minutes to filter. Then the only real decision left is how much money to put behind being wrong, and the answer to that is as little as possible, which is why I keep saying 3ml when a bigger bottle would suit me better. Then wear it for a day and decide on hour five rather than minute five, because the base is where you live.
So: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml is where most lists land, and its jasmine sambac and neroli are printed here rather than buried. Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab all carry an oud, so most lists remove them early, and the Pack of 3 is exactly those three. And if your list rules out florals, oud and sweetness at once, I have no attar for you and I will say so - Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml is the honest route and it is not an attar. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
I hate most perfumes I've tried - how do I find an attar I actually love?
Six steps, in order. Write the dislike list in your own words, bottles included. Convert each line into a named material or a structure. Cross off the range against the published note lists. Buy one 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399, never the trio. Wear it a full day and judge the drydown rather than the opening. Then repeat once with what the first bottle taught you. SOSA makes exactly four attars, so step three is quick.
Why not just ask which attar is the bestseller?
Because popularity is information about other people and your dislike list is information about you, and only one of those can eliminate a bottle. A bestseller answer is not wrong, it is simply the last question rather than the first: once the crossing-out has left one or two candidates, what other people buy is a mildly interesting tiebreaker. Starting there is what has produced most of the bottles now sitting unopened in people's cupboards.
Which SOSA attars will my list probably remove?
Three of the four contain oud - Nawaab is white royal oud, Ameeri carries a soft oudh, Mastani carries oudh - so a single line about oud removes three bottles at once and leaves only Adaa. Mastani also carries vanilla and tonka, and both Ameeri and Mastani are rose-led. Adaa carries jasmine sambac and neroli. Every SOSA attar contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka, so ruling out all three leaves none.
Should I buy a sampler or the Pack of 3 to speed this up?
SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so there is nothing to buy on that front. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is not one either: it is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at full size, which is the three heaviest attars, and it excludes Adaa entirely. The 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399 is the sample size. Buy one, not three, and let the crossing-out decide which one rather than the packaging.
How long should I wear it before deciding, and what am I judging?
A full day, and you are judging the drydown. Put one roll on one pulse point in the morning and check it at ten minutes, at two hours and at five, then decide on the last of those, because the base is the part you will live with and the opening has the shortest stay. SOSA publishes 6-8 hours for the attars and publishes no wear figure at all for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes.
And step three can return nothing: Every SOSA attar carries a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka. Rule out all three and the honest route is Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml, which is not an attar.
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oilsfor a reader who has hated nearly everything and has been shopping in the wrong order
SOSA Adaa (₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml) is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - the lightest of SOSA's four attars, the only one with no oud, no vanilla and no rose, and where most dislike lists land. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, hand-blended in Pune, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. SOSA makes exactly four attars, three of them contain oud, every one contains at least one of a floral, an oud, or vanilla and tonka, and there is no sampler - so the 3ml is the sample size and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is never the first purchase. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.
Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
