Think about who is actually in your living room. An elderly parent in the armchair nearest the console for the whole evening. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. What do you notice is neutral: it lets somebody say the hall smells fresh, or the fragrance in here is quite strong, or honestly mostly the cooking, and all three of those are information you can act on. Choose your instrument well too. The most useful noses belong to people who do not visit often - a friend who has not been for months, family from another city, anybody delivering something - because a regular visitor has partly acclimatised to your house across visits. Ask three or four people over a few weeks, treat consistent answers as data and isolated ones as noise, and stop asking once you have a level that survives. And if somebody volunteers that it is strong without being asked, act immediately, because almost nobody says that once.
If I cannot smell it in my own house, is the machine even working?
Almost certainly yes, and the fact that you cannot smell it is the expected outcome rather than a fault. Your nose stops reporting on a constant smell within minutes, so the experience of living in a well-scented house is precisely the experience of noticing nothing while every visitor notices something. Before you touch the setting, use the free test: leave the house for about ten minutes, get properly into outside air rather than standing in the porch, and come back in through your own front door judging only the first breath. If that first breath reads as quietly scented, everything is right and the problem was your adaptation. If it genuinely reads as nothing at all, then look at the causes in order before reaching for intensity. Was the schedule running long enough ahead. Is the unit sitting in the direct draught of an air-conditioner, or in a corner rather than in the connected air. Are the doors you assumed were open actually open, since coverage assumes one connected volume and no machine pushes scent through a closed door. Raising the setting should be the last thing you try, not the first.
Should the level be higher for a big party than for a quiet evening at home?
No, and this is the most common thing hosts get wrong. It is true that a full room behaves differently: thirty warm bodies raise the temperature, breath and food add moisture, the front door opens every few minutes so scented air is continuously exchanged, and food, drink, flowers and other people's perfumes compete for the same volume. The instinct is to compensate with intensity at eight o'clock. What that actually produces is a gradient rather than a level - noticeable near the machine, thin at the far end of the room - arriving at the exact moment guests walk in with completely fresh noses, so the house smells like it is being prepared instead of smelling like itself. The correct compensation is time, not power: start the schedule well ahead so the connected volume holds a deep even reservoir of gently scented air, and what leaves through the door keeps being replaced by more of the same. If a genuinely enormous evening makes you want one notch more, take it back down the next morning, because a raised setting that is never reversed is the whole mechanism of drift.
Is a reed diffuser easier to get right than a machine?
In a small room, yes, and that is a genuine reason to use one rather than a consolation. A reed has no schedule, no intensity dial and no app: the oil travels up the sticks and evaporates at a slow steady rate, so it settles at its own quiet working level and stays there, which is exactly what you want behind a closed door where nobody is monitoring anything. The one adjustment worth knowing is that the number of sticks is the dial. Fewer sticks in a small guest bathroom, more in a larger bedroom, and if a room ever feels too much, pull two sticks out rather than moving the bottle. Keep reeds deliberately low in small sealed rooms, because a closed space concentrates everything and the guest bathroom is the single easiest room in an Indian villa to overdo. Somebody at my last party said the house was strong. How much should I turn it down?
Meaningfully, and permanently, and without making that person feel responsible. Start from what the remark actually means: almost nobody comments on a host's house, so the fact that one person said it out loud means several others noticed and stayed quiet, and the level is well above where you believe it is. So do not shave a fraction off. Take it down a clear step, run it there for a few weeks, and then use the borrowed-nose test on two or three irregular visitors to confirm where you have landed. Be honest about how you got there as well, because it is almost always drift rather than one bad decision: a nudge upward before a big evening that was never reversed, then another, each one invisible to the family because everybody living there adapted to it within days. That is why the household rule is worth adopting - down freely at any time, up only if an outsider has independently said they notice nothing. And if the remark came with a headache, turn it off in that part of the house that evening.
