Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers & Room Scenting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There is a genuinely useful answer to this, and it is not just a warning about what reeds cannot do. Reed count is a real control and it does two real things: it sets how present the fragrance is where the bottle stands, and it sets how long the bottle lasts. So the right number is the one that balances those two for your room and your habits. Here is how to find it in about a week, plus the honest note on flipping, on clogging, and on the one thing no reed count will ever fix.
Quick answers — read this first
How many reeds should I use in a reed diffuser? Start with about half to two thirds of the reeds your bottle came with, live with it for three or four days, then adjust one stick at a time. Use more reeds when the room is bigger or draughtier, when it is a space you pass through rather than sit still in, or when you want more presence and are happy for the bottle to run for fewer weeks. Use fewer in a small enclosed room such as a bathroom or a study, in a bedroom you sleep in, and whenever you want the bottle to last. The number you settle on is personal because it depends on your room's warmth, its air movement and how close you sit to the bottle.

Do more reeds mean a stronger scent or a longer-lasting diffuser? Stronger, and the two are directly traded against each other. Every reed adds exposed wet surface, evaporation happens at the surface, and evaporation is how the oil is spent - so a higher reed count gives you more fragrance per hour near the bottle and fewer weeks from the bottle. A SOSA reed diffuser gives about 6 to 10 weeks at the count it ships with in an ordinary room; fewer reeds pushes towards the longer end and quieter, more reeds towards shorter and stronger. What reed count never changes is how far the scent goes, because a reed diffuser has no fan, no heat and no pressure to carry fragrance anywhere.

Does flipping the reeds make it stronger? It does, briefly and genuinely. Flipping puts the already saturated end into the air, so you have a full wet surface releasing immediately instead of waiting for a dry end to wick through, and the boost is noticeable within minutes. It fades over the following days as that end settles into the normal rate, and it does not add reach any more than extra reeds do. Flip when you notice the scent has dropped off rather than on a schedule, and expect that reeds do eventually clog: fragrance components and airborne dust gradually block the channels, so an old reed carries less oil however often you turn it. At that point fresh reeds, not more flipping, restore the release rate.
The short answer
Short answer: Start with about half to two thirds of the reeds supplied, then adjust one at a time over a week. More reeds for a bigger or draughtier room, or a space you want more presence in and accept a shorter life. Fewer for a small enclosed room, a bedroom at night, or when you want the bottle to last - a SOSA reed diffuser gives about 6 to 10 weeks at its shipped count. Flip the reeds when you notice the scent drop off: it refreshes the wet surface and gives a short-lived boost, and reeds do eventually clog and need replacing. Reed count sets intensity at the bottle and lifespan, never reach. Reeds from Rs 749; for a room that smells of it, an active ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, or the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999 for where you sit. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.
Talk to us: WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and where you actually sit or sleep in it, and we will place you on the ladder honestly.
Why it smells near the bottle - at a glanceStep 1 - a reed diffuser is passive: oil evaporates, nothing pushes itStep 2 - so it is strongest at the bottle and fades with distanceStep 3 - whole room evenly? An active diffuser from ₹899Step 4 - strong where you sit or sleep? Safar ₹3,999Keep the reed too · from ₹749, no power needed
Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Straight answer
What is the right number of reeds to use in a reed diffuser?
Start in the middle and adjust over a week. Put in about half to two thirds of the reeds the bottle came with, leave it three or four days, then add or remove one stick at a time until it is right where you actually stand or sit. Use more reeds when the room is larger or draughtier, when it is a hallway, a landing or a living room you move through rather than sit still in, or when you simply want more presence and are content for the bottle to run for fewer weeks. Use fewer reeds in a small enclosed room such as a bathroom, a powder room or a study, in a bedroom you sleep in, where a gentler dose is kinder overnight, and whenever you want the bottle to last. A SOSA reed diffuser gives about 6 to 10 weeks at the reed count it ships with in an ordinary room, and that figure moves with reed count in the obvious direction: fewer sticks, quieter and longer; more sticks, stronger and shorter. Flip the reeds when you notice the scent has dropped off, not on a fixed schedule. Flipping puts the saturated end into the air, so a full wet surface starts releasing at once instead of waiting for a dry end to wick through, and the lift is real and immediate. Be honest about its limits though: the boost is short-lived, it settles back over the following days, and reeds do eventually clog as heavier fragrance components and airborne dust block the channels, at which point fresh reeds rather than more flipping are what restores the release rate. And the one thing no number fixes. Reed count is a dial for intensity at the bottle and for lifespan. It is not a dial for distance, because a reed diffuser has no fan, no heat and no pressure to carry fragrance outward. If the fragrance is right beside the bottle and the far side of the room is still empty, you have found the limit of the format rather than the wrong number of sticks. That is where an active diffuser belongs: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience where it stands, and add a Boond at ₹899 or Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 for a whole ordinary bedroom, accepting the added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for strong undiluted scent in the space you occupy. How to choose your number in one week

A week-long method, then the two honest footnotes on flipping and clogging.

Why this happens in your room
Finding your number without wasting a bottle
1Start with half to two thirds of the reeds supplied, then wait2Adjust one stick at a time and judge the next morning3More reeds: bigger or draughtier room, more presence, fewer weeks4Fewer reeds: small room, bedroom at night, a longer-lasting bottle
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
1
Method
Start in the middle and move one stick at a time
The reason most people end up with too many reeds is that they judge too quickly. A new stick has to wick oil all the way up its exposed length before it contributes, and that takes hours, so twenty minutes after pushing in four extra reeds you will smell almost no difference and reach for four more. Do it the slow way instead. Begin with roughly half to two thirds of the reeds supplied, which is enough to give you a real reading without committing your bottle. Leave it three or four days. Then judge it the way a visitor would, by walking into the room from outside rather than sitting in it, because your nose adapts to a continuous scent within minutes and will under-report anything you have been sitting next to all evening. If it is too quiet where you stand, add one stick and reassess the next morning. If it is insistent, or the room feels heavy when you walk in, take one out. Three or four of those adjustments and you have your number, and it will be specific to that room rather than borrowed from a general rule.
Tip: judge by walking in from outside, in the morning - never by sniffing while sitting beside the bottle.
2
The trade
Which way to lean, room by room
Once you understand that reed count trades intensity against weeks, the choice becomes straightforward. Lean towards more reeds when the room is larger, when it is draughtier, when a fan or an AC is running most of the time, or when it is a space you pass through rather than settle in - a hallway, a landing, an entry console - because a moment of fragrance as you walk by needs to register quickly. Lean towards fewer reeds in a small enclosed room, where the space concentrates scent for you and a heavy hand quickly becomes too much: a 60 sq ft bathroom at a 10 ft ceiling is only about 17 cubic metres of largely still air behind a shut door, and a reed diffuser is at its most effective there. Lean fewer in a bedroom you sleep in, where a gentler dose overnight is simply more comfortable, and where a headache or a heavy feeling in the morning is a signal to remove a stick. And lean fewer whenever you want the bottle to see you through a long stretch. Households with children, elderly relatives, a pregnant family member or pets should treat gentle as the default and build up only if they want to.
3
Honestly
Flipping, clogging, and the limit of the whole exercise
Two footnotes, both worth knowing. Flipping works, briefly. Turning the reeds puts the saturated end into the air, so you get a full wet surface releasing immediately rather than a dry end that has to wick through, and the lift is noticeable within minutes. It is a genuine refresh and the right thing to do when you notice the scent has dropped off. It is also short-lived: over the following days that end settles to the ordinary rate and you are back where you were. Flip when you notice, not on a calendar. Reeds clog. Over the weeks the fine channels gradually fill with heavier fragrance components and airborne dust, so an old reed carries less oil upward and releases less however often you turn it. That is the normal end of a reed's working life, and fresh reeds restore the release rate. And the limit. All of this tuning moves intensity at the bottle and weeks in the bottle. None of it moves distance, because nothing in the format carries scent outward. When you have your number and the room still is not what you wanted, that is the point to change tool rather than count: an active diffuser from ₹899 with the Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the spot you occupy.
Tip: flip when you notice the drop, replace the reeds when flipping stops helping.
The SOSA principle
There is a right number of reeds, and finding it is worth a week. What there is not is a number that makes a passive bottle reach across a room.
More for a bigger, draughtier space and more presence; fewer for a small room, a bedroom at night, and a longer life. Flip when it drops off; replace when it clogs.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active

Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. A note from Sonal

There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.

So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use all the reeds that came in the box?
Not necessarily, and it is worth thinking of the supplied set as a maximum rather than an instruction. The box gives you enough for a larger or draughtier room and for replacing reeds as they clog, and using every one on day one in a small bedroom usually produces a scent that is stronger than you want and a bottle that runs down faster than you expected. Begin with about half to two thirds and work upwards only if you want more. The exception is a big, breezy or frequently opened space such as a hallway or a living room with a balcony door, where the full set is a reasonable starting point. Either way, keep any spare sticks sealed and dry so they are ready when the first set stops carrying oil properly.
How often should I flip the reeds?
When you notice the scent has dropped off rather than on a schedule, which for most people works out to somewhere around once a week or once a fortnight depending on the room. Flipping puts the saturated end into the air, so a full wet surface starts releasing at once and the lift is immediate and real. Be realistic about it: the boost is short-lived and settles back over the following days, and every flip is also spending oil a little faster, so flipping daily mostly shortens the bottle. Wash your hands afterwards and keep the oil off polished or painted surfaces, since fragrance oil can mark them. When flipping stops producing any noticeable lift, that is the reeds telling you they have clogged and want replacing.
How do I know when the reeds need replacing rather than flipping?
The signal is that flipping no longer does anything and the scent is faint even standing beside the bottle, while there is still oil in the glass. That combination means the channels have clogged with heavier fragrance components and airborne dust, so the reeds cannot carry oil upward at their old rate. Fresh reeds restore the release rate immediately. Two other things are worth checking at the same time: whether the bottle has been sitting in direct sun or next to something warm, which speeds everything up and can change the fragrance, and whether the reeds are dusty, since a dusty exterior surface releases less cleanly. Replace rather than wash - a reed that has been carrying oil for weeks does not come back with rinsing.
Does reed count change how safe or gentle the fragrance is at home?
It changes how strong the fragrance is in the air around the bottle, and gentle dosing is a sensible default in any home. If a room feels heavy when you walk into it, if anyone in the house finds it too much, or if you wake with a headache, remove a stick or two and give it a day - that is a recalibration signal and it is easy to act on. Households with small children, elderly relatives, a pregnant family member or pets are exactly the ones we would suggest starting low and building up only if everyone is comfortable, and keeping the bottle out of reach for the straightforward reason that it holds oil. Ventilation and cleaning come first in any case; fragrance is there to finish a well-aired room, not to stand in for airing it.
I have my number and my bedroom still does not smell of it. Now what?
Then you have done the tuning properly and found the honest limit of a passive diffuser, which is that it scents the air near where it stands rather than the room around it. The next step depends on what you actually want. If you want it noticeable and true in the place you sleep, the waterless cordless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 gives strong, undiluted scent in a personal space such as a bedside table, a desk, a car or a hotel room, and comes with three hotel-inspired blends. If you want the whole ordinary bedroom to smell of one fragrance, an ultrasonic is both the right tool and the cheaper one: Boond Rs 899 or Sukoon Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, with the honest trade-offs of humidity, some dilution and white dust in hard-water areas. Tell us the room size on WhatsApp and we will say which.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.

Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
