It is volume, not floor area. A room with a high ceiling, or one whose door stays open onto a passage, behaves like a much larger room than its floor plan suggests.
Soft furnishing eats fragrance. A curtained, carpeted, upholstered bedroom needs a reed or two more than a tiled room of exactly the same size.
The ceiling: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open space, no reed count is the answer. Use two bottles at opposite ends, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899.
2. Ordinary bedrooms and studies: four to six. Start at four if the door stays closed and the room is heavily curtained and carpeted; go to six if it is airy, tiled, or the door is open to a passage all day.
3. Entryways: four to six, placed on the console by the door. An entrance is not a room you sit in — you want a greeting, not a residence. Four reeds of a rounded composition does more here than eight of a sharp one.
4. Kitchens: six, and never while you are cooking. Run the extractor, open a window for ten minutes, close up, and give it half an hour before the fragrance is in charge again. Fragrance layered over live cooking makes a third smell nobody designed.
5. Living rooms: six to eight, depending on whether the space is closed off or opens into a dining area, a passage and a balcony. Eight reeds costs you bottle life roughly in proportion — about five to six weeks on a 50ml rather than six to eight.
6. Open living-dining, or anything past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected space: two bottles, not more reeds. Output per bottle is fixed. The only way to raise the total in a large space is another source — two 50ml at opposite ends beat one 130ml in the middle every time.

Part one — what "room size" really means for a passive diffuser
Floor area is the number everyone reaches for and the least useful of the three that matter. A reed diffuser is filling a volume of air, that volume is being exchanged at some rate you did not choose, and part of what it releases is being absorbed by everything soft in the room. Two rooms with identical floor plans can want counts three reeds apart because of those three variables. Get them in view and the table in Part two stops being a list to obey and becomes a starting point you can adjust with confidence.
Fresh Brew₹849 · 9.5/10This is the variable people forget entirely. A 150 sq ft living room that opens into a dining area, a passage and a balcony is not a 150 sq ft room — it is one lobe of a connected space that might be twice that, and the diffuser is trying to scent all of it. The reed count you need follows the connected volume, not the room you are standing in. The same logic works in your favour: a bedroom whose door is closed at night concentrates beautifully at four reeds. In an Indian flat this changes by the hour, which is why the honest recommendation for open-plan homes is not a heroic reed count but a second source. Two bottles at opposite ends of a connected space put fragrance where one point source never will, and each can be set to its own count.Part two — the room-by-room reed table
This is the table I would hand a friend moving into a new flat. The sizes are rules of thumb for an ordinary Indian home rather than measurements — use the room descriptions rather than the numbers if your flat does not match. The strength figures quoted are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds; our scale, not an industry standard.
| Room | Typical size | Reeds | Composition that suits it | Why this count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guest bathroom ★ | Small, sealed, hard surfaces | 3 | Morning Freshness · 9.0 · ₹749 | Little air and nothing to absorb — six reeds accumulates by evening |
| Nursery or box room | Small, door usually closed | 3 | Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 | Deliberately faint; keep the bottle out of reach and on a tray |
| Master bedroom | Medium, curtained and carpeted | 4–6 | Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 | Four with the door shut, six if it opens onto a passage all day |
| Study or home office | Medium, often sealed with AC | 4–6 | Mountain Breeze · 9.4 · ₹849 | Enough to register at the desk, not enough to distract; keep it clear of the AC |
| Entryway or foyer | Small but open to everything | 4–6 | Garden Bloom · 8.9 · ₹799 | You want a greeting on arrival, and passing traffic does the distributing |
| Kitchen | Medium, high air exchange | 6 | Morning Freshness · 9.0 · ₹749 | Air is replaced constantly — but never diffuse over live cooking |
| Closed living room | Medium to large, well furnished | 6–8 | Fresh Brew · 9.5 · ₹849 | Eight when hosting, six the rest of the time — the extra costs weeks |
| Open living-dining | Beyond 250–300 sq ft connected | 6–8 each, in two bottles | Warmth & Bloom duo · ₹1,598 | One point source cannot cover it at any count; two sources can |
| The honest caveat: these sizes are working rules of thumb from our own testing and customer correspondence, not measurements, and ceiling height, ventilation, furnishing and season move every row. Two more things the table cannot show. First, if you run two bottles in one connected space, the compositions must share a note or you get a seam where they meet — Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth. Second, a bigger bottle is not a bigger room: a 130ml at the same count lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 and projects about the same. | ||||

Part three — sizing your own room without a tape measure
You do not need a floor plan for this. Pace the room heel to toe, count the steps along two walls and multiply — a pace is close enough to a foot for a decision that comes in whole reeds. Then apply the two adjustments from Part one: add a reed for a high ceiling, and add a reed if the room stays open to the rest of the flat. Subtract one if the room is small, sealed and hard-surfaced. That arithmetic will land you within a reed of right almost every time, and the last reed is the one your nose should decide rather than my table.
Then set it and leave it alone for a week. This is where most people go wrong: they judge the room in the first hour, when a new bottle is spiking as dry reeds saturate and the top notes leave, and they judge it with a nose that has been in the house all day. Two habits fix both errors. Do the doorway test — step outside for fifteen minutes, come back in and notice what greets you — and ask anyone who visits, without prompting them, whether the room smells of anything. Your olfactory system reports change rather than constants and adapts hardest at home, so in your own flat you are close to the least reliable witness available. Guests are better instruments than any measurement you can take.
Two boundaries to hold on to while you are experimenting. The first is the honest ceiling of the format: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, adding reeds stops being the answer, because output per bottle is fixed and you are asking a point source with no propulsion to reach further than it can. Two bottles raise the total; one loud bottle does not. The second is that a large room is not solved by a large bottle. A 130ml at ₹1,349 holds more oil and lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, which is a genuinely good reason to buy it — but at six reeds it projects about the same as the 50ml beside it. And if what you want is a big room scented on demand, before guests arrive rather than continuously, then the format is wrong rather than the count: a Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low and comes with three 15ml Hotel Collection scents. Reed oil never goes into it, and its water-based fragrance never goes into a reed bottle.
Part four — what to buy for your floor plan
The same advice arranged by home rather than by room, because most people are buying for a whole flat at once and want to know how many bottles it takes. Each row assumes you will set the counts room by room from the table above.
| Your home | Bottles | Where they go | Counts to start at | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1BHK or studio ★ | Two 50ml — a duo | One in the living space, one in the bedroom or bath | 6 and 3 | Day & Night ₹1,498 |
| 2BHK, closed living room | Two to three 50ml | Living room, master bedroom, guest bath | 6, 4, 3 | From ₹1,548 |
| 2BHK, open living-dining | Two 50ml in the open space plus one elsewhere | Opposite ends of the open run; one in a bedroom | 6 and 6, then 4 | From ₹1,598 |
| 3BHK or a duplex | Three to four, mixing 50ml and 130ml | 130ml where you want to stop thinking about it | 6 in shared rooms, 3–4 in bedrooms | 130ml from ₹1,249 |
| One bathroom only | One 50ml | Shelf or cistern top, on a tray | 3 | ₹749 |
| A hall you want scented for guests, on demand | A machine, not a reed count | Sukoon, 270–320 sq ft, timers and remote | — | ₹1,899 |
| Any of the above, long term | Oil refill rather than new bottles | Reuse your own vessel; refresh reeds as you refill | Same counts | ₹2,399 / 300ml |
Versailles
When we were testing the range through a Pune summer, the same 50ml bottle went round my own flat for eight weeks — bathroom, bedroom, study, hall — and it behaved like four different products. That is the whole reason this table exists. The bathroom at six reeds was too much by the second evening. The hall at six reeds barely registered until I moved it onto the console by the door, and then it was exactly right.
I resisted publishing room sizes for a long time, because a square-foot number invites a false precision that this format does not have. A reed diffuser is not a machine with a rated coverage; it is a passive object whose performance depends on your ceiling, your curtains, whether your doors are shut and how often somebody walks past. So treat the sizes here as descriptions of a room, not as a specification.
The one number I will stand behind is the ceiling. Past roughly 250 to 300 square feet of connected open space, reeds are the wrong tool, and I would rather say that than sell you a third bottle for a hall that wanted a machine. Everything we make is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85 per cent humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
