They turn one building into a set of small volumes that barely exchange air with each other, which is excellent for thermal comfort and inconvenient for scenting.
Quick answers — read this first
How does heritage architecture change scent movement? Thick walls, deep reveals and small openings mean adjoining rooms exchange very little air, so a building behaves as many separate volumes rather than one connected space.

What does that mean practically? A machine serves the room it is in and does not carry meaningfully into the next one, so scenting several rooms means several units - or, more usefully, choosing two and leaving the rest.

Do courtyards help distribution? No. A courtyard ventilates rather than connects, so it carries fragrance away rather than passing it between rooms. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed volume, from ₹299.
The short answer
Short answer: Many small volumes with little exchange. One machine serves its own room only, and courtyards ventilate rather than connect.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for one enclosed volume up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected space, the Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large hall, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Open and semi-open areas are specified as nothing.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with room volume and ceiling height, AC type and whether it brings in outside air, how often the main door opens, and when filters were last cleaned - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How do thick walls, courtyards and multiple rooms change scent movement?
They make a building behave as a collection of small, weakly connected volumes rather than as one space, which changes both the zoning and the count. Thick masonry walls with deep reveals and relatively small openings - the construction that keeps these buildings cool - also mean that adjoining rooms exchange very little air, especially when doors are closed. A machine in one room serves that room and does not carry meaningfully through a thick wall into the next, which is the opposite of a modern open-plan interior where a single unit covers a large connected volume. Courtyards do not solve this. They ventilate rather than connect: air moving through a courtyard is leaving the building rather than travelling between rooms, so a courtyard between two rooms is a barrier for scenting purposes even though it is an opening architecturally. The consequences are three. The count follows enclosed rooms, so a heritage property with twelve rooms and a scenting ambition has twelve separate problems rather than one - which is why our advice in these buildings is almost always to choose two or three rooms and leave the rest deliberately unscented. Small volumes concentrate, so each of those rooms needs a lower setting than a modern room of the same floor area would, because thick-walled rooms are often smaller and better sealed than they look. And stone and lime plaster hold almost nothing, so these rooms clear quickly when a unit stops, which makes them easy to tune and easy to correct. Zoning, not scaling, is the answer - two rooms done properly rather than a building attempted. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed room, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: thick walls mean separate rooms, and a courtyard is a barrier, not a corridor.
One per enclosed room, and only for the two or three that matter: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, fragrance from ₹299.

Many small volumes, little exchange

Heritage buildings are the clearest case in this cluster of architecture deciding the specification rather than taste.

Why this works
Reading a heritage building
1 Treat every enclosed room as its own volume, because it is 2 Treat courtyards and arcades as barriers, not as connections 3 Choose two or three rooms rather than attempting the building 4 Set each lower than floor area suggests - these rooms are well sealed
The machine sized for one connected volume rather than for a floor plan: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Walls are boundaries here
Not partitions
A modern interior's partitions are thin, with large openings and shared ceiling voids, so a single machine covers several notional rooms. A metre of masonry with a small doorway is a genuine boundary, and fragrance does not meaningfully cross it - which means the mental model that works in a modern office actively misleads in a haveli.
Tip: A metre of masonry is a boundary, not a partition.
02
Courtyards separate
Even though they look like connections
An open courtyard between two rooms appears to join them and does the opposite for scenting: air entering it rises and leaves rather than travelling into the next room. Two rooms across a courtyard are as separate as two rooms in different buildings, which is counterintuitive from a plan and obvious once you stand in it on a hot afternoon.
03
Choose, do not scale
Two rooms, properly
Since each room is a separate problem, scenting a heritage building comprehensively means a unit per room and a running cost to match, for a result that would read as uniform and commercial anyway. The better answer is two or three rooms done quietly, with the rest deliberately left - which is both cheaper and, in these buildings, the more convincing outcome.
Tip: Twelve rooms is twelve problems. Choose two.
The SOSA principle
Two rooms across a courtyard are as separate as two rooms in different buildings.
The plan says otherwise. Stand in it in May and you will agree.

What this means for the count

Because stone and lime hold little, a mistake in these rooms clears quickly, which makes trialling a register in one of them low-risk before deciding on the second.

Whether one machine can cover a split property is in the disconnected rooms chapter, the zoning argument is in the scent zoning chapter, and the heritage hotel plan is in the concentration chapter.

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Honest notes on conditions: fragrance is an ambience decision only and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning, filtration or source control. Where dust, damp, drainage or ventilation faults are present, those should be corrected first and fragrance considered afterwards; increasing output to compensate is not recommended. Fragrance introduced into a semi-open or outdoor volume is carried away by air that does not stay in the space, so it is spent rather than used. This is a physical limit and not a machine limit: no output setting makes an open courtyard hold a scent. Sizing is by connected air volume including ceiling height, so rooms that do not share air require separate treatment or none. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal

Nearly every call that starts with the machine being too weak ends somewhere else. In Jaipur it is usually one of three things: a filter nobody has cleaned since installation, a door that opens more often than anyone counted, or a room that shares air with a space nobody included in the sizing. The machine is generally doing what it was asked to do; the room was described optimistically.

Dust deserves its own paragraph because the instinct is exactly backwards. Adding fragrance to a dusty room does not make it smell clean. It makes it smell of dust and fragrance, which is worse, and it burns oil at a rate nobody enjoys. Filtration, door seals, mats and a cleaning rota first. Then the air is worth doing something with.

And the thick walls and courtyards that make Jaipur beautiful also make it awkward. Rooms that do not share air need their own machines or none at all. Fragrance is an ambience decision, never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. If something is not working, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531 before you spend anything. Frequently asked questions

How does heritage architecture change scent movement?
Thick walls and small openings mean adjoining rooms exchange very little air, so the building behaves as many separate volumes rather than one connected space.
Does a courtyard connect rooms for scenting?
No, it separates them. Air entering a courtyard rises and leaves rather than travelling into the next room, so it acts as a barrier.
How many machines does a heritage building need?
One per enclosed room if you scent them all, which is why the sensible answer is to choose two or three and leave the rest deliberately unscented.
Do these rooms need more or less output?
Usually less. Thick-walled rooms are often smaller and better sealed than they appear, so they concentrate a given output more than a modern room would.
Are mistakes easy to correct?
Yes. Stone and lime hold little, so these rooms clear quickly. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
