Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
The awkward part of this one is not the budget. It is that you may not know exactly what happened, or how they feel about it. A move that fell through, a wedding that did not go ahead, a course they never started, a plan that quietly stopped being mentioned - each of those is a different loss, some are partly a relief, and the person may not have decided yet which it is for them. So the gift has to work without knowing, which means it has to carry no message of its own. That is a real constraint, and it points firmly at a room rather than a person.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, British rose and night jasmine, Rs 799
SOSA Garden Bloom reed · British rose and night jasmine ₹799 →
The one that makes no assumptions. SOSA Garden Bloom, 50ml at ₹799 - British rose and night jasmine, lasting about 6 to 10 weeks, with no flame and nothing to plug in. It is aimed at a room rather than at a feeling, which is why it stays the right gift whichever way the person turns out to feel about the plan.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you send someone whose plans fell through? Something with no theme and no reference to what happened. A reed diffuser at ₹799 for a room, or a candle at ₹399. Avoid anything commemorative, anything travel-shaped and anything that could be read as a comment on the plan itself.

Should I buy for the person or for their home? For the home, when you do not know the details. A room has no opinion and a person does - and a gift aimed at a room needs no guess about how they feel. An attar is the better choice only when you can name a scent they already wear, which is a different kind of knowledge from knowing what happened.

What if I am not sure whether they are upset about it? Then ring before you buy. A parcel shaped like condolence arriving for something they are quietly relieved about is a misreading, and it obliges them to be sad at you. A phone call settles it in two minutes and you can still send something afterwards, knowing which thing to send.
The short answer
Short answer: Buy for a room rather than a person: a reed diffuser at Rs 799 in 50ml, or a candle at Rs 399. Nothing themed, nothing commemorative, nothing that refers to the plan. If you do not know how they feel about it, ring first and buy afterwards.
The pick: A SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, 50ml at ₹799 - British rose and night jasmine, no flame, no socket, and no reference to anything that did or did not happen.
Why: It is aimed at a room rather than at a feeling, which means it stays correct whichever way they turn out to feel about the plan.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What should I send someone whose plans did not work out?
Buy for a room. A reed diffuser at ₹799 in 50ml - British rose and night jasmine, about 6 to 10 weeks, no flame and nothing to plug in - is the version that works without you knowing the details, because a room has no opinion and a person does. A candle at ₹399, about 15 to 18 hours, does the same job for less and is finished sooner. What to avoid is anything with a theme: nothing travel-shaped if the move fell through, nothing bridal if the wedding did not happen, nothing that resembles a commemoration, and nothing that could be read as a view on whether the plan was a good idea. A gift cannot address what happened - they arranged a life around something and the something stopped, and a scented object has no bearing on that at all. What it can honestly say is that somebody noticed the plan mattered to them and noticed that it did not come off. The call is the bigger part, and it is also how you find out whether they want this treated as a loss at all. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The rule for a gift you have to choose in the dark: it must still be correct if you have guessed the feeling wrong. A room-scented object passes that test. Almost anything themed fails it.
The safe answer when you do not know the details: a reed diffuser at ₹799 or a candle at ₹399. Aimed at a room, not at a feeling.
SOSA reed diffusers from ₹749

How to choose when you do not know which plan it was

This is the widest situation in the whole category, and the usual approach - match the gift to the occasion - simply does not work, because there is no occasion and you may not know the details. Three questions get you to a good answer without them.

1
The first variable
Do you actually know how they feel about it?
Plans fall through in a lot of ways and the feeling underneath is not predictable. A move that did not happen can be a genuine loss or a quiet escape. A wedding that did not go ahead can be either of those and several more. A course they did not start may be a disappointment or a decision they made themselves and have not explained.

If you do not know, do not let the parcel guess for you. Something that arrives shaped like sympathy, for a thing they are relieved about, obliges them to perform sadness at you - which is a strange favour to ask. Ring first. Two minutes of conversation tells you which version this is, and you can still send something afterwards, now knowing what to send. That order round is better than the reverse.
Tip: If you cannot tell whether it is a loss or a relief, ring before you buy.
2
The second variable
Buy for the room, not for the person
When you are short of information, aim at a space. A room has no feelings about the plan and no taste to get wrong, which makes it the safer target in exactly the way a worn fragrance is not. A reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml runs about 6 to 10 weeks with no flame, no socket and nothing to remember; a candle at ₹399 asks only that it be lit.

An attar at ₹379 is the more personal gift and the better one - but only when you can finish the sentence she usually wears something with.... That is a different kind of knowing from knowing what happened, and if you have it, use it. If you do not, buy for the room instead of spending more to cover the gap. Spending your way past missing information does not work and ends up as a large object somebody has to find space for.
3
The third variable
Does the object refer to the plan in any way?
It should not. No travel-themed anything if the move is the thing that collapsed. Nothing that looks bridal or celebratory if a wedding did not happen. Nothing engraved, nothing dated, nothing that will sit on a shelf as a marker of the year the plan did not come off.

This is also a reason to avoid the largest formats. A reed duo set from ₹1,498 or a trio from ₹1,055 arrives as a significant parcel, and a significant parcel is itself a comment - it says I have decided this is a big deal, which may be exactly what they are trying not to have decided yet. Small leaves the interpretation open, and open is what you want when you do not know the details. SOSA encloses no printed card, so nothing in the parcel will say anything you did not intend.
Tip: Nothing themed, nothing dated, nothing commemorative. Leave it open.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to choose without knowing the details
  1. Ring first if you cannot tell whether this is a loss or a relief for them.
  2. Aim at a room: a reed at Rs 799, or a candle at Rs 399 for less.
  3. Nothing themed, engraved, dated or shaped like the plan that fell through.
  4. Stay under Rs 1,000 so the parcel makes no decision on their behalf.
The SOSA principle
When you do not know which loss it is, buy for a room. A room has no opinion about what happened, and a gift aimed at one stays correct however they turn out to feel.
It is also the reason the smaller gift is safer here - a big parcel decides for them that this was a big deal.

Which SOSA product carries no message of its own

The room-first shortlist. Among the reeds, Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night jasmine, Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and the least declarative of the five, Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile - the name on the bottle and a description of the scent, not a claim about anything it does - Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is pine, sage and cedar and Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla. All are 50ml at those prices, 130ml from ₹1,249, and all run about 6 to 10 weeks. The candles at ₹399 - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings, Evening Walks - are hand-poured in small batches at about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. Wax melts at ₹499 need a ceramic burner at ₹599, so they are a component rather than a gift unless the person already owns one, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine rather than a present.

The SOSA gift edit
The four routes, ranked by how little they assume about what happened
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 Aimed squarely at a room, which is the whole argument when you do not know the details. No flame, no socket, nothing to remember, about 6 to 10 weeks in 50ml. It fails if their home is already scented with something they chose themselves, and the 130ml at ₹1,249 is more parcel than this moment wants.
A candle · ₹399 The same logic, smaller and shorter. Hand-poured, about 15 to 18 hours, no taste to guess at and no theme attached. The best choice if you want the gesture to stay light. It fails for somebody who will not light a flame or lives where one is not allowed, and the ₹699 duo is already a box rather than a gesture.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 The better gift when you can name a scent they already wear, because it is personal and used up rather than displayed. It fails precisely when this page is most relevant - when you are short of information - since a guessed fragrance asks them to be gracious about a second thing in the same fortnight.
Ring first, buy after · ₹0 for now The right order when you genuinely cannot tell whether this was a loss or a relief. Two minutes on the phone removes the guesswork and you can still send something. It is also the honest answer where the plan collapsing is part of something larger, in which case the person who helps may need to be a professional rather than a parcel.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

On size, the argument here is slightly different from elsewhere in this range, and it is worth spelling out. A large gift makes a decision on their behalf. It says you have concluded this was a significant loss, and if they have not concluded that yet - or have concluded the opposite - the parcel has overtaken them. The ₹399 candle and the ₹799 reed leave the interpretation where it belongs, which is with them. That is also why nothing here is themed: no travel object for a move that collapsed, nothing bridal, nothing dated or engraved that will sit on a shelf marking the year. And since SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, the only words attached to this are the ones you send yourself, which means you can make them as light or as direct as the situation actually needs.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

Buy for the room when you do not know the story. A room has no opinion about what happened, and it will not ask the person to explain, out loud, which kind of disappointment this was.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
  • Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
  • Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
  • Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What do you send someone when their plans fell through?
Something aimed at a room rather than at a feeling: a reed diffuser at Rs 799 in 50ml, or a candle at Rs 399. Nothing themed, nothing commemorative and nothing that refers to the plan. Keep it under Rs 1,000 so the parcel does not announce a verdict on how serious it was.
Should I ask what happened before I send something?
If you cannot tell whether this is a loss or a relief, yes. A sympathy-shaped parcel for something they are quietly glad about obliges them to be sad at you. Two minutes on the phone settles it, and you can send something afterwards knowing which thing to send. That order round is better.
Is a candle or a reed diffuser better here?
A candle at Rs 399 if you want the gesture to stay light and short - about 15 to 18 hours and then finished. A reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 if their home is not scented and you want something that runs about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to light or plug in. Both are aimed at a room, which is the point.
Why not something personalised or engraved?
Because it becomes a marker of the year the plan did not come off, sitting on a shelf. The same argument rules out anything themed - travel objects if a move collapsed, anything bridal if a wedding did not happen. The gift should carry no message of its own, and leave the words to you.
How much should I spend?
Rs 379 to Rs 1,000 covers this properly. Going bigger does not say more, it decides for them that this was a major event, which may be the thing they have not settled yet. If money is what you want to convey, this is the wrong instrument entirely - and a phone call remains worth more than any of it.
