Why is an object a risky gift here? Because they have chosen everything in the house themselves, so a decorative object competes with decisions they already made carefully.
Which space should the gift target? The entrance and the circulation. It is the first thing a visitor experiences and the one thing no drawing specifies.
They have made every decision in that house themselves
Anybody who has built or fitted out a house knows how many decisions it contains, and a couple who have just finished doing it have made every one of them. Vitrified or wooden flooring, and in which rooms. Which way the kitchen counter runs and where the hob sits. Whether the wardrobes have drawers or shelves, and at what height. Warm light or neutral. Matte or chrome. Where the plug points go. Two years of that produces a house that is a record of their preferences, and it also produces a specific difficulty for anybody buying a gift: almost anything placeable is a decision, and decisions in that house are already taken. A vase has a shape and a colour they did not choose. A painting occupies a wall they had plans for. A decorative bowl goes on a console they selected. None of it is unwelcome exactly, but it competes, and the most common outcome is that it gets used politely for a while and then quietly relocated. There is one part of a house that nobody specifies. Nobody, at any point in the design of a home, decides how it will smell. It is not on the drawings, the contractor does not ask, and the couple will not have discussed it, because it is not a decision anybody knows they can make until somebody makes it for them. And it is not a small part of the experience. The order in which a visitor receives a house is: the gate, the door, the smell, then everything they can see. Smell arrives before the flooring is noticed and before anybody comments on the light. So it is genuinely the last unclaimed decision in a house where every other one is taken, and a gift aimed at it does not compete with anything. That points at a specific location too. The instinct is to give something for the living room, because that is the room that gets shown. The better target is the entrance and the circulation - the hall inside the front door, the passage that connects the rooms, the stairwell if there is one. Those spaces form the impression and they are the spaces nobody furnishes with a fragrance, partly because there is often no obvious surface. A single bottle on a hall shelf does more for how a house reads than three in the living room. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and is the best entrance register because clean is what you want the first breath of a house to be. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and resinous, excellent in a hall with wood in it and it does not compete with jasmine coming in from the garden. Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla for a dining room or a study. Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is lavender with chamomile for the bedroom, and Garden Bloom at the same is British rose with night-blooming jasmine, best in an interior room. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is the cleanest version of this present: one for the entrance, one for the main bedroom, two registers, complete in the box, nothing to install and nothing that occupies a surface they had plans for. For a genuinely large connected home - roughly two thousand square feet of connected volume and up - the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the version that handles the circulation properly, and it is worth noting that its advantage is precisely the unclaimed part of the house. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the air the house is already moving, so it reaches the hallway, the stairwell and the landing where there is no surface to stand a bottle on, and holds the whole connected volume at one even strength rather than producing pockets. Coverage up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet. No water, no heat, no dampness, no oily film. Four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. One, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity from a Bluetooth app or its onboard buttons. Under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, one hundred and sixty-five by eighty by two hundred and fifteen millimetres, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or wall and HVAC mountable, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening. Refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Two things that keep it from becoming a decision they did not want: it is designed to be discreet rather than decorative, and it can go out of sight in the circulation path rather than on a surface they have styled; and because the oils are a separate consumable, the register stays their choice rather than yours, which in a house full of their own decisions is the right way round. Three honest notes. If the house is newly finished, nothing starts on day one - paint, polish, varnish and new joinery need a few weeks of open windows, which in this climate is easy, and fragrance over curing paint smells of both. If the house is single storey with no ducting, ceiling fans on low are the distribution system and the machine belongs in the central circulation near one. And if the connected volume is under roughly two thousand square feet, bottles are correct and the machine is not, however important the occasion. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
So give them the one thing nobody puts on a plan: how the place smells when the door opens
The last unclaimed decision in the house.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
