Will it seem odd to send a gift for no reason? Only if the gift is out of proportion to the reason. ₹399 with a one-line note reads as saw this, thought of you. A ₹1,498 reed duo with no occasion attached reads as a statement, and the friend then has to work out what the statement is. Keep it under ₹1,000 and the question never comes up.
When should I not send one? When you would need a paragraph to explain it. If the message you are drafting is getting longer, the gift is doing something other than what you said it was doing. Also skip a worn fragrance if the friendship is new, and say the thing directly if what you actually want is a conversation you have not had yet.
The only thing that can go wrong here, and how to stop it
Almost every other page about gifting a friend is written for a difficulty. There is no difficulty here, which changes what you have to get right: not the thoughtfulness, which is already established by the fact that you are reading this, but the register. These three variables are the whole of it.
So set the ceiling before you shop, not after. ₹379 to ₹1,000 covers every version of this properly: attars at ₹379, ₹385, ₹389 and ₹399 in 3ml; candles at ₹399, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo; car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549; a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 at the top of the band. Going above that does not make the gesture warmer. It makes it a question.
None of that makes an attar wrong. It makes it conditional. Send one when you already know what they wear and can name it - Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud with Mysore sandalwood; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose. If you cannot name what they like, or the friendship is new enough that you would hesitate for a second, buy for the room. The candle route needs nothing from you except the thought.
What to leave out is as useful as what to put in. No apology for sending it, no explanation of why you were thinking about them, no question that needs answering and nothing that asks them to react. A one-line message with nothing owed in it is what makes a no-occasion gift land as light - and if you find you cannot write that line without it getting complicated, that is worth noticing before you buy rather than after.
- Set the ceiling first: Rs 379 to Rs 1,000, and stop looking above it.
- Buy for the room unless you can name a scent they already wear.
- Pick the single, not the set. Rs 399 candle, not the Rs 699 duo.
- Send one line the same day saying what made you think of them.
What to send on an ordinary day, and in what size
The range narrows quickly once the ceiling is set. Candles are the safest ordinary-day gift SOSA makes: Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 each, hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. Evening Walks and Misty Mornings are the least declarative of the four. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999, which is the top of what an ordinary day carries. Attars at ₹379 to ₹399 in 3ml are the smallest serious fragrance gift there is, alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed - right when you know what they wear. Car fragrance from ₹449 is the underrated one for a friend who drives every day, in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price. Wax melts at ₹499 are the trap: they need a ₹599 ceramic burner, so alone they are a component rather than a gift unless the person already owns one, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine rather than a present.
| The option | Who it suits, and where it fails |
|---|---|
| A single candle · ₹399 | The least explaining of anything here. It is plainly a gift, plainly not an occasion, and it is used up in a couple of evenings rather than kept. About 15 to 18 hours of burn time. It fails only for somebody who does not light candles at all, and the ₹599 ceramic burner with wax melts is the flameless version if you know they own one already. |
| Car fragrance · ₹449 to ₹549 | The most useful gift on this list for a friend who drives daily, and the least loaded - nobody reads a car scent as a declaration. Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price. It fails if they do not drive, and it fails if you want the gift to look considered rather than practical. |
| A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 | Small, alcohol-free, rolled on rather than sprayed, and the most specific thing here - which cuts both ways. Right when you can name what they already wear. Wrong when you cannot, and wrong in a new friendship, because choosing how somebody smells is a warmer thing to have done than choosing what their hallway smells of. |
| A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 | The top of the band, and the one to think twice about. It asks nothing of them - no flame, no socket - and runs about 6 to 10 weeks, which makes it a genuinely good object. But at ₹749 with no occasion attached it starts to look like it is marking something. Send it for a new flat, not for a Tuesday. |
On sizes: send the single. One candle at ₹399 rather than the ₹699 duo, 3ml rather than 6ml or 12ml, 50ml rather than 130ml. Not because the larger ones are bad - because on a day with nothing attached to it, size is the only thing your friend has to read the gift by. A single is unambiguous. A set looks like a set, and a set looks like an occasion. If you want it to feel more considered, spend the effort on picking a scent that actually connects to something they have said, rather than on moving up a size.
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.
| Gift | What it is | Who it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|

| SOSA wax melts | Flameless, needs a burner | Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too | from ₹499 |
| SOSA car fragrance | Hanging or spray | Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price | from ₹449 |
| SOSA reed duo sets | Two reeds in one box | Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion | from ₹1,498 |
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
- Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
- Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
- Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
- Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

Versailles
The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.
What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.
So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.
