Lower than anywhere else in this catalogue. A room where people sit for two hours is the hardest condition there is, and the instinct to make it welcoming pushes exactly the wrong way.
Quick answers — read this first
How restrained should clinic waiting-room fragrance be? The lowest level of any commercial category. Patients adapt within about fifteen minutes while delivery continues, so a two-hour wait produces far greater total exposure than a short visit at the same setting.

Who should set the level? Somebody entering from outside with a nose that has been out of the building for twenty minutes, standing where patients enter. Staff cannot judge it and will raise it without intending to.

How is it kept there? A key lock and a written setting, because levels only ever get adjusted upward. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is key-locked for exactly this, from ₹299.
The short answer
Short answer: Lowest of any category. Set from the door by an outdoor nose, then key-lock it, because levels only move up.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a reception up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, SOSA reed diffusers from ₹749 for small rooms, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299 - reception only, at a low setting, with a genuinely unscented waiting option available.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with reception dimensions and ceiling height, how long patients typically wait, whether consultation rooms share air with reception, and whether you can offer a fragrance-free waiting option - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How restrained should continuous fragrance be in a clinic where patients wait for hours?
Lower than anywhere else we specify, and the reasoning is mechanical rather than aesthetic. A person in a constantly scented room stops perceiving the fragrance after roughly fifteen minutes while the machine continues delivering at the same rate - so a patient waiting two hours receives eight times the exposure of somebody passing through in fifteen, while being aware of considerably less of it. That gap between perception and exposure is invisible from inside the building, which is why waiting rooms drift upward. Three things make a destination clinic the most demanding case in this catalogue. The waits are long and the patients cannot leave. The room contains people who are unwell - nauseated, in pain, pregnant, mid-treatment - for whom ambient fragrance is not a neutral addition. And the staff are in it all day, adapted by half past nine, which makes them the least reliable judges of level and the people most likely to raise it. How to find the level: leave the building for twenty minutes so your own nose resets, come back in through the patient entrance, stand where patients stand, and set it at the point where you are genuinely unsure whether you can smell anything. If you are certain you can, come down a step. Then lock it and write the setting into the opening routine, because adjustment in practice is one-directional: nobody has ever walked into their own waiting room and thought it seemed a little strong. And keep a genuinely fragrance-free waiting option, offered rather than requested. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, key-locked, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit and SOSA makes no therapeutic claim of any kind. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: two hours at the same setting is eight times the exposure of fifteen minutes.
Key-locked, which in a waiting room matters more than anywhere else: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, fragrance from ₹299.

Why long waits mean less

This is the chapter that decides whether a clinic's scenting is defensible, and it is entirely about the dial.

Why this works
Setting a long-wait room
1 Leave the building for twenty minutes so your nose resets 2 Re-enter through the patient entrance and stand where patients stand 3 Set at the point where you are unsure, then come down one step 4 Key-lock it, write it into the opening routine, and review yearly at most
The machine most Nagpur clinics use in reception, and only in reception: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot drift. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Exposure outlasts perception
By ninety minutes or more
Everybody in the waiting room stops noticing the fragrance within about a quarter of an hour, while the delivery rate is unchanged for the rest of their wait. What accumulates over two hours is far more than what was assessed in the first five minutes, and nobody inside the room can detect the difference - which is precisely why the setting must be made from outside and then removed from anybody's reach.
Tip: Perception stops at fifteen minutes. Delivery does not.
02
Staff are the wrong judges
Adapted by half past nine
The people who spend nine hours a day in the room have stopped perceiving a constant scent long before the first patient arrives, so their honest report is always that it seems faint. Levels set or adjusted by staff climb across a season and never come back down, because nobody has ever entered their own waiting room and judged it too strong. A key lock converts one careful decision into a durable one.
03
Who is in the room
Unwell people, and they cannot leave
A waiting room holds people who are nauseated, in pain, pregnant, mid-treatment or migraine-prone, in a situation where objecting is awkward and leaving is not an option after a four-hour journey. That is a materially different environment from a shop floor, and it is the reason our recommended level here is the lowest we give anybody - and why an unscented waiting option is a requirement rather than a courtesy.
Tip: They cannot leave the room, and objecting is hard. Set it accordingly.
The SOSA principle
Nobody has ever walked into their own waiting room and thought the scent was a bit much today.
Which is the entire reason the machine has a key.

Finding and holding the level

At this level the register barely matters, which is fortunate, because it lets the choice be made for durability and broad acceptability rather than for character.

The SOSA scent edit
Long waits, four pressures
Scent Why it suits the mood
Adaptation Fifteen minutes to stop perceiving; delivery continues for two hours
Staff judgement Unreliable from mid-morning, and adjustment is always upward
Who is present People who are unwell, cannot leave, and find objecting difficult
The fix Set from the entrance with an outdoor nose, write it down, key-lock it

The fragrance-free requirement is in the sensitivity chapter, the zoning line is in the reception and consultation chapter, and the repeat-visit version is in the fragrance fatigue chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for clinics: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and a reception with a washroom, damp or waste problem should have that corrected first. Additional notes for healthcare premises: ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit and SOSA makes no therapeutic, wellbeing, recovery, anxiety or pain claim of any kind. Patients include people who are unwell, nauseated, pregnant, undergoing treatment, migraine-prone or chemically sensitive, and for some of them ambient fragrance is genuinely unwelcome. Genuinely fragrance-free waiting and consultation options should therefore be available and offered rather than requested, clinical and treatment areas should follow the practice's own infection-control and clinical policy, and scenting should never be presented to patients as part of care. Waiting rooms hold patients for long periods, so levels should be markedly lower than retail and set from the entrance by somebody arriving from outside. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, repeat visits, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A note from Sonal

The thing that stays with me about Nagpur clinics is the journey. A family leaves a town in Vidarbha at five in the morning, travels three or four hours with somebody who is unwell, and arrives into a waiting room at ten. What they need in the first ten minutes is water, somewhere to sit together, a washroom that works, and a room that is not too hot. Those come a long way before anything I sell.

And I want to be careful here in a way I am not in a showroom. Ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit, and I will not let it be described to a patient as though it does. Some of the people in that room are nauseated, pregnant, mid-treatment or migraine-prone, and for them a scented waiting area is not a nice touch. So if a clinic scents reception at all, it goes in low, and there is a genuinely unscented place to sit that is offered rather than asked for.

Where it does earn its place is narrow and real: a reception that consistently smells clean rather than of a closed-up morning. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. If you want an honest view on whether your clinic should do this at all, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How restrained should waiting-room fragrance be?
The lowest of any category. Patients adapt within about fifteen minutes while delivery continues, so a long wait produces far greater exposure than a short visit.
Who should set the level?
Somebody entering from outside after twenty minutes away, standing where patients enter. Staff have adapted and will raise a level they cannot perceive.
How do I find the right setting?
Set it at the point where you are genuinely unsure whether you can smell anything, and if you are certain you can, come down one step.
Why key-lock the machine?
Because adjustment is one-directional. Nobody has ever entered their own waiting room and decided the scent was slightly too strong.
Is an unscented waiting option required?
Yes, and it should be offered rather than requested. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
