Before - at the services stage, not the decoration stage. That sounds like the answer a scenting company would give, so here is the test: three of the four decisions involved are things you cannot buy afterwards without opening a wall or a ceiling, and the fourth is a decision you should deliberately leave until last. Extraction, zoning and a socket are drawing-set items. The register is not, and choosing it early is the commonest way practices get this wrong in the opposite direction.
Quick answers — read this first
Should scenting be planned before or after an office fit-out? Before, at the services stage. Three things get decided before handover and are genuinely expensive to retrofit: the extraction over the plotter corner and the model-making bench, the zoning and doors that determine whether workshop air reaches the client rooms, and a socket where the machine will actually stand. All three live in the services and layout drawings, and all three become disruptive once the ceiling is closed and the joinery is in. What should not be decided early is the fragrance itself, because you cannot choose a register for rooms that do not yet exist and materials you have not yet smelled in place.
What has to be designed in before handover for scenting to work later? Extraction first: a dedicated extract over the large-format printer and over the model-making bench, because toner, warm paper, solvent and adhesive are the two loudest smells in a studio and no fragrance decision survives them. Second, the zoning: which rooms have doors, where the workshop sits relative to the client rooms, and whether the air-conditioning return carries workshop air into the meeting room. Third, power: a socket where the machine will genuinely stand, since the SOSA Vaayu is DC 12V / 1A, five watts, mains powered, and mounts freestanding or on a wall or into HVAC. None of that is a large budget item at the drawing stage and all of it is awkward afterwards.
When should the fragrance itself be chosen? Last, once the rooms exist and you can smell what the materials are actually doing. A newly finished interior has a smell of its own: adhesives, sealers, paint, new carpet, oiled timber, fresh concrete. Some of that fades over weeks and some of it becomes the permanent background of the building, and until you have walked into the finished space cold on a Monday morning you do not know which register belongs with it. Choose the machine and the infrastructure from the drawings, then live in the studio for a few weeks and choose the register from the room. It costs from Rs 299 to change your mind at that stage, which is the cheapest decision in the whole project.
The short answer
Short answer: Before, at the services stage rather than the decoration stage. Three things are decided before handover and are expensive to retrofit: extraction for the plotter corner and the model-making bench, the zoning and doors that decide whether workshop air reaches the client rooms, and a socket where the machine will actually stand - the SOSA Vaayu is DC 12V / 1A, five watts, mains powered, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable. Choose the register last, once the rooms exist and you can smell what the materials do, since a new interior has its own smell of adhesives, sealers and finishes. Registers from Rs 299, SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
I am fitting out a new studio. What do I need to decide now, and what can wait?
Three things now, one thing later. 1. Extraction, at the services stage. A dedicated extract over the large-format printer or plotter corner, and a proper local extract over the model-making bench. These are the two loudest smells a studio manufactures - toner and warm paper on one side, solvent, spray mount and adhesive on the other - and no register survives either of them. Retrofitting an extract means opening a ceiling. 2. Zoning and doors. Decide now whether the workshop and the model bench sit behind a door, and whether the air-conditioning return path carries their air into the client presentation room. This is the decision that determines whether you are scenting one connected volume or several, and a rating always assumes one connected body of air - a machine cannot push scent through a closed door, and it cannot stop workshop air arriving through an open return either. 3. A socket where the machine will actually stand. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) runs on DC 12V / 1A, five watts, mains powered, and mounts freestanding, on a wall or into HVAC - so what you need is a point at the arrival end of the plan, low, out of the direct path of a supply grille. Five watts is nothing; the awkward part is discovering after the joinery is in that the only socket is behind a desk on the wrong side of the room. 4. The register, last. Do not choose the fragrance from a mood board. A newly finished interior smells of adhesives, sealers, paint, new carpet and fresh timber, some of which fades and some of which becomes the building's permanent background. Move in, work there for a few weeks, walk in cold on a Monday, and then choose from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) - the 1 Hotels-inspired blend for concrete and timber, the Ritz-Carlton-inspired one for plaster and glass, the Westin-inspired one when it should barely register. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent of any hotel brand. Your team will breathe this for ten hours a day, so it goes in at whisper calibration on a locked schedule, and any sensitivity report is a recalibration signal. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with the drawings. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: extraction, zoning and a socket are drawing-set decisions and expensive to retrofit - the register is not, and should be chosen last, from the finished room. Vaayu ₹11,999 (DC 12V, 5W), registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Single rooms and consultation corners start on reeds from ₹749; cabin systems from ₹1,899; large-premises HVAC from ₹25,999. Three things that are expensive to retrofit
The three items that belong in the services drawings, and the one item that belongs to the month after you move in.
Why this works
What goes in the drawings, and what waits until you can smell the room
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
The two smells a studio manufactures, and both need a duct
A practice generates two distinctive smells and both are produced at a fixed address, which is what makes them a services problem rather than a fragrance one. The first is the plotter corner: toner, warm paper, warm rollers and the faint ozone note that comes off a large-format machine running a full set. In most studios that machine ends up wherever there was space, which is often close to a wall of desks or, worse, near the arrival end where a visitor meets it first. Give it a corner with a local extract and the problem stops existing; leave it in open plan and you will be trying to scent over it forever. The second is the model-making bench: spray mount, solvent-based adhesive, MDF and card dust, the hot smell of laser-cut acrylic, and whatever the current project's material is. That bench needs local extraction at the bench, not general ventilation in the room, and it needs it because the people working there deserve it, not because of anything to do with fragrance. Both extracts are ordinary, unglamorous, cheap items at the services stage and genuinely disruptive afterwards, because retrofitting either one means opening a ceiling that has just been finished and re-coordinating with the lighting and the air-conditioning you have already committed to. Draw them now. If the practice later decides it wants nothing to do with fragrance at all, both extracts remain the right decision anyway, which is the honest test of whether something belongs in the drawings.
Tip: a plotter corner and a model bench each need a local extract - cheap in the services drawings, disruptive once the ceiling is closed.
2
Zoning
Doors and return paths decide what you are actually able to scent
The single most useful thing to fix at plan stage is which parts of the studio are one body of air and which are not, because that decides everything afterwards. A coverage rating always assumes one connected volume: the Vaayu (₹11,999) is rated to roughly 1000m³ of connected air, and a 2,000 sq ft studio at a twelve-foot ceiling is 24,000 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 680m³ - one machine, comfortably, if it really is one volume. Put a closed meeting room and a closed model shop into that plan and you no longer have one volume, you have three, and each of them behaves separately. That is not a problem, it is a design decision, and it is far better made deliberately at the drawing stage than discovered afterwards. Two specific things are worth checking on the services drawings while you still can. First, whether the workshop or model bench shares a return-air path with the client presentation room, because an air-conditioning system will cheerfully carry solvent from one to the other through a ceiling void regardless of how good the door is. Second, whether the extract in the workshop is strong enough that the room runs slightly negative to the studio, so air moves into it rather than out of it - which is the whole trick, and it is a services conversation you can only have before the system is commissioned. Get those two right and the studio floor stays clean without any fragrance decision at all. Get them wrong and no machine at any price will fix it, which is worth writing down now rather than learning in the first monsoon.
3
The socket, and the register
One trivial thing to draw now, and one decision to defend from being made early
The trivial item first, because it is the one that most often gets missed. A SOSA Vaayu runs on DC 12V / 1A and draws five watts, mains powered through an adaptor, and it mounts freestanding, on a wall, or into an HVAC system. Five watts is nothing at all in electrical terms, so this is not a load question, it is a position question: you want a point at the arrival end of the plan, low rather than high, out of the direct path of a supply grille so the output is not fired across the room in a stream, and not behind the joinery. That is one line on the small-power drawing and it costs nothing. Discovering after handover that the only socket in the right area is behind a run of desks is the sort of small, permanent irritation that turns a considered decision into a trailing cable. Now the item to protect from being decided early: the register itself. A newly completed interior has a strong smell of its own - adhesives, sealers, paint, new carpet, oiled timber, fresh concrete, and in an Indian fit-out often the last of the polish and the site dust. Some of that clears in weeks and some of it settles in as the permanent background of the building, and there is no way to know which from a drawing. Choosing a fragrance from a mood board six months before handover means choosing it against a room that does not exist. Move in, work there for a few weeks with nothing running, walk in cold from outside on a Monday morning, and only then pick from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) against what the finished materials are actually doing. Changing your mind at that stage costs a few hundred rupees, which makes it the cheapest reversible decision in the entire project, and there is no reason on earth to spend it early.
Tip: infrastructure early, fragrance late - the only decision here that is cheap to change is the one everybody wants to make first.
The SOSA principle
Scenting is a services-stage decision and a decoration-stage decision at once. The infrastructure goes in the drawings; the register waits until the room exists.
Extraction, zoning and a socket are expensive to retrofit and cost almost nothing to draw. The fragrance costs from Rs 299 to change, so change it late, against the finished materials.

The register is the one decision you make last
What that looks like as a sequence, from the services drawings to the month after you move in. One format note before the table: the water-based Hotel Collection bottles (from ₹299) run in the ultrasonics - Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh (₹3,499) - while the Vaayu (₹11,999) runs waterless nebulising oil and ships with four hotel-inspired blends chosen as a bundle at checkout. The two formats are not interchangeable.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Vaayu need any special power or installation work?
No. It runs on DC 12V / 1A and draws five watts, mains powered through its adaptor, so electrically it is in the same category as a phone charger and needs no dedicated circuit and no special provision. It can stand freestanding on a surface, mount on a wall, or connect into an HVAC system if you want the distribution to run through the ducts. What you are planning for at the drawing stage is therefore position rather than load: a point at the arrival end of the plan, low, away from the direct throw of a supply grille, and not buried behind joinery. For anything about installation into an HVAC system specifically, WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 with the services drawings and we will tell you what the connection involves.
Should I specify the machine in the tender, or buy it after handover?
Buy it afterwards, and put only the socket and the extraction in the tender. There is no advantage to having a contractor procure a plug-in machine, and there is a real disadvantage to committing to a register before the building exists. What genuinely belongs in the construction documents is the extract over the plotter corner and the model bench, the door and zoning strategy, and the small-power position. Everything else is a purchase you make in a few minutes once you have moved in and know what the studio smells like. That sequencing also means the fragrance decision stays yours rather than becoming a line item somebody else closed out while you were dealing with the joinery.
How long after moving in should I wait before choosing a fragrance?
A few weeks of normal working, and at least long enough that the strongest of the fit-out smells have gone. Adhesives, sealers, paint and new carpet all off-gas hardest in the first days and settle over the following weeks, and what is left after that is the building's real background: the timber, the concrete, the cleaning products the building uses, and whatever the studio itself manufactures. Judge it cold, from outside, first thing on a Monday, which is the honest test of what the place smells like at rest, and again at five on a Friday, which tells you what a full working week adds. Then choose. The whole point of waiting is that you are choosing a register to sit with something real rather than with an idea of it.
What if the workshop has to be in the same open space as the studio?
Then the extraction does all the work and the fragrance decision gets simpler rather than harder, because there is only one volume and one answer. Put a proper local extract at the bench itself rather than relying on general ventilation, keep solvent work and spray mount contained and preferably done at a specific station rather than anywhere on the floor, and accept that the studio will occasionally smell of work being done, which is not a failure. Then scent the connected volume at a low, even, unremarkable level and let the bench be honest. What we would not do is raise the setting to compete with the solvent, because a fragrance laid over solvent produces a third smell that everybody reads as a cover-up. Our page on a studio with a model-making bench goes into the detail.
Is there any point planning for this if the practice has not decided it wants scenting at all?
Yes, and this is the strongest version of the argument. Every one of the three infrastructure decisions is correct on its own merits whether or not you ever buy a machine. The extract over the plotter and the model bench is a working-conditions improvement for the people at those benches. The zoning and return-path work is what stops solvent arriving in a client meeting, which matters regardless of fragrance. A socket in a sensible position costs nothing and is useful for something else if not for this. So the honest recommendation is to draw all three now and leave the fragrance question genuinely open, which is a considerably better position than the one most practices find themselves in a year after handover.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
