Can I make a joke of it? Yes, and that is the advantage you have. A partner's gift gets read closely; a friend's does not, so a note that is plainly funny about how bad the week has been is usually better received than a solemn one. Being light is not the same as being dismissive - name the thing, then be yourself about it.
Is it better to just visit instead of sending something? Often, yes. If you can get to her this week, go, and take nothing. A parcel is what you send when distance or timing is real, and it is a poor substitute for sitting in somebody's kitchen. Where something serious is happening, the gift sits alongside turning up and never in place of it.
The latitude friendship gives you, and how to use it
The mechanics of this are the same as any small gift. What is different is the register you are allowed to use, and the fact that one of the options is to send nothing. These three variables cover it.
Light is not the same as dismissive, though. The one thing the note still has to do is name the actual thing - the job, the break-up, the month with her mother - because naming it is what proves you have been paying attention. Do that in one line, then be yourself for the rest of it.
The posted version is for the times when you genuinely cannot: different city, no leave, a week where she has told you she does not want company. Then a small thing is a reasonable way to say the same sentence from further away. And where what she is going through is serious - a loss, an illness, something you cannot solve - a gift belongs alongside being reachable and showing up, never as a substitute for either, and nothing you send is advice about what she is dealing with.
You probably also know what she wears, which makes the attars accurate: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Mastani at ₹389 is night jasmine, damask rose and oudh; Nawaab at ₹399 is white oud with Mysore sandalwood. If you want her to choose rather than you, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 puts three in one box.
- First ask whether you can go instead. If you can, go and send nothing.
- If you cannot, cap it at Rs 1,000. Most of this sits at Rs 379 to Rs 799.
- Pick her flat or her skin. You know her flat, so that is the easier call.
- Write the note in your own voice, name the thing, and ask nothing of her.
Which SOSA product suits a friend, and in what size
Because you know her, you can be more specific than any of the other pages allow. For a flat, Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose with night jasmine, Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is pine, sage and cedar, and Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, which is the one to send if her kitchen is the room she lives in. Evening Calm at ₹799 is a lavender and chamomile blend, and the name is a name rather than a description of what it will do. For something worn, the four attars are properly distinct and start at ₹379 for 3ml, or the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 hands the choice to her. For a daily driver, Jasmine at ₹449 or Lemon at ₹499.
| The option | Who it suits, and where it fails |
|---|---|
| A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 | The default when you know the flat. Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to switch on and nothing to refill week by week. Falls down if she has housemates who did not choose it, or if you send the 130ml into one small room, where it will be more than she wanted. |
| A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 | The smallest thing that still counts. Alcohol-free oil, rolled on, used on ordinary mornings. The right pick when you want to send something without it being a gesture at all. Falls down if she wears one signature fragrance and nothing else, because then it just sits there. |
| The Attar Trio · ₹1,055 | Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box, so she picks rather than you. Works between friends in a way it does not between partners, because a set does not read as a statement here. Falls down if you are trying to keep this low-key, since three bottles do look like a proper present. |
| Sending nothing · ₹0 | Turning up with empty hands and staying two hours. The honest top of this table whenever you can manage it, and it is not a lesser option than anything above. Falls down only when distance, timing or her own stated wish for space makes it impossible - which is exactly when a parcel earns its place. |
On size, stay small for the same reason as everywhere else: something she can put on a shelf without having to respond properly. The 3ml attar at ₹379 and the 50ml reed at ₹749 are the right end of the range, and the 130ml reed at ₹1,249 or a duo set at ₹1,498 is a housewarming gift wearing the wrong hat. There is one more case for buying nothing, and it is worth stating: if she has told you she wants to be left alone for a bit, believe her. A parcel is a small imposition as well as a kindness, and arriving in somebody's week uninvited twice is not better than once.
The SOSA gifting range
Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.
| Gift | What it is | Who it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOSA attars | Alcohol-free roll-on oil | Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is | from ₹379 |
| SOSA Attar Trio | Pack of three attars | Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess | from ₹1,055 |
| SOSA reed diffusers | Passive home fragrance | Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks | from ₹749 |
| SOSA reed duo sets | Two reeds in one box | Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift | from ₹1,498 |
| SOSA car fragrance | Hanging or spray | Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price | from ₹449 |
| SOSA Safar | Waterless car and travel diffuser | Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car | ₹3,999 |
| SOSA Vaayu | Waterless cold-air machine | Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business | ₹11,999 |
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
- Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
- Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
- Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.

Versailles
The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.
The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.
One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice.
