Watch what actually happens on a Saturday. If you do decide to step it up a notch for a genuinely big evening, put it back down the next morning, because a raised setting that never comes down is how houses drift into being overpowering without anybody noticing.
Where should the machine go in a house that entertains?
In the connected volume, low, and away from two things. Place it where the entrance, living and dining air flows together rather than in a corner behind a sofa, because you are scenting a body of air rather than a spot. Keep it low: warm air rises, and in a house with a stair void or a double-height room, convection will carry the scent upward on its own if you let it start from the bottom. Then avoid the two placement mistakes. Do not sit it in the direct draught of a split air-conditioner, which will fire the output across the room in one direction and leave the rest of the volume thin. And do not put it within a metre or two of where people actually sit for three hours, because whoever ends up in that armchair gets a far stronger evening than everybody else and will be too polite to mention it. Somewhere in the hall or the passage that connects the rooms, out of the way and out of sight, is usually the answer, and it does need air moving around it, so a closed cupboard will not work.
Can one machine cover a house when the doors to the terrace and garden are open all evening?
It can, but you should understand what is happening so you are not disappointed. An open terrace door means part of your scented air is continuously leaving, and no machine at any price is going to hold a scent level in air that is genuinely outdoors. What a machine on a schedule does well is keep replacing what leaves, which is why the connected indoor volume still reads as consistent even with doors propped, and why starting well ahead of arrival matters more on those evenings than on closed-up ones. Two practical notes. First, the covered part of the terrace immediately outside the doors will get a soft version of the indoor air, which is usually pleasant and is not worth trying to control. Second, do not raise the intensity to fight the open door, because the moment the doors close - when it rains, or at the end of the evening - you are left with a room that is far too strong. Let the connected indoor volume be the job and let the garden be the garden.
How do I know whether my setting is right, if I cannot smell my own house?
You borrow somebody else's nose, and you do it on an ordinary day rather than during a party. Ask the first person through the door, within the first thirty seconds before their nose adapts too, what they notice coming in - phrased exactly like that, honestly, rather than does it smell nice, which only ever produces a compliment. Irregular visitors are the most useful: a friend who has not been for months, family from another city, anybody making a delivery. Treat consistent answers as data, and if two people independently mention the fragrance itself rather than the house, it is too high. The second test needs nobody at all: leave the house for ten minutes, get properly into outside air rather than standing in the porch, and walk back in through your own front door judging only the first breath. Do it after any change of setting and once a month regardless. And treat anybody in the house reporting a headache or irritation as a recalibration signal rather than a difference of opinion - turn it down or off in that part of the house the same evening.
