There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Is the Vaayu worth it if I only host cards a few times a year?
Judged on the card parties alone, no, and we would rather be straight about that. A single open-plan living and dining area of 600 to 800 sq ft is about 170 to 227 cubic metres at a 10 ft ceiling, which is a fifth to a quarter of the Vaayu's approximately 1000 cubic metre rating, and a Megh at Rs 3,499 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 running the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 will hold that room properly for a fraction of the outlay. Where the Vaayu becomes the right purchase is when the answer to a different question is yes. Is your entrance, hall, living, dining and passage genuinely one connected body of air with no doors, so you are scenting a floor rather than a room? Do you want the house to smell like this on ordinary Tuesdays, on a schedule, without anybody remembering to do anything? Would you use the four hotel-inspired blends that come in the box across the year rather than for one evening? If those are yes, it is a good buy that happens to also cover card night. If they are no, buy the ultrasonic and spend the difference on the food.
Can I put the Rs 299 Hotel Collection fragrance in a Vaayu?
No, and this is the one product question where getting it wrong actually matters. The Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml is a water-based fragrance made for ultrasonic diffusers, which work by breaking a water and fragrance mix into a cool mist. It belongs in the Boond at Rs 899, the Sukoon at Rs 1,899 and the Megh at Rs 3,499. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is a different machine entirely: it is a waterless cold-air nebuliser with no tank of water in it, and it runs a waterless oil. It ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends already in the box, chosen as Bundle A, B or C at checkout, so you are not buying fragrance separately to get started. Anybody telling you the two formats are interchangeable is wrong. If you want to explore the registers cheaply before committing, the Pack of 7 at 15ml for Rs 1,799 is the water-based route and needs one of the ultrasonics to run in.
How much fragrance will a machine use across an eight hour card evening?
We do not publish a consumption figure for the Vaayu and we will not estimate one, because the honest answer is that it depends on three things that are yours rather than ours: the volume of air you are scenting, how many hours the schedule actually runs, and what intensity you set it to. A gentle setting in a 170 cubic metre room for five hours and a higher setting across a 566 cubic metre connected floor for ten hours are not the same question, and a single number that pretended to cover both would be a made-up number. What we can tell you is what is published. The Vaayu is Rs 11,999 and includes four hotel-inspired blends in the box. For the ultrasonics, the water-based Hotel Collection is Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, with a Pack of 7 at 15ml for Rs 1,799, so you can work out your own cost once you know your own use. The room will have smoking near the balcony door. Does that change the machine?
It changes the ventilation plan rather than the machine, and no machine should be bought or run as a response to smoke. Fragrance adds to what is in a room, it does not remove it, so a unit set higher to fight cigarette smoke gives you smoke and fragrance together, which everyone in the room will find worse than either alone. The things that actually help are unglamorous: ask people to step out rather than lean in, keep the balcony door genuinely the boundary, empty and rinse ashtrays through the evening rather than at the end, and if there is an extractor or a fan at that end of the room, use it. Then place your fragrance at the opposite end of the volume, near the entrance, at a level you would describe as gentle. If your card room has a smoking corner at one end, the far end is where the machine belongs anyway, for coverage as much as for tact. What is the cheapest setup that will genuinely work for a card evening?
Do the free part properly and then spend about Rs 1,500 in total. The free part is most of the result: ventilate the room in the afternoon with genuine cross-flow before you close and cool it, run the kitchen extractor during and well after cooking, put the bins out, sort the shoe cabinet at the front door, and dry the doormat. That decides more than any product. Then buy in this order.
