An open-plan floor is not one big room, it is three or four connected zones with different air behaviour, and the standard mistake is trying to serve all of them from a single machine in the middle.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I scent a large open-plan living room? Two modest units at opposite ends, both run gently, rather than one large unit run hard. That gives even coverage without a hot spot. A Megh at Rs 3,499 or two Sukoons at Rs 1,799 each, with bottles from Rs 299.

Which fragrance suits a big room? One with a base that holds: the Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome (citrus, floral, sandalwood) or the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods). Light tea registers dissipate before they reach the far end of a large volume.

Why is one part of my open-plan room stronger? Because a single unit produces a gradient, and air conditioning usually pushes that gradient further in one direction. Two units at opposite ends, both running gently, is the fix.
The short answer
Short answer: an open-plan floor is several connected zones, not one room, so two modest units at opposite ends run gently beat one large unit run hard. Use a base-heavy register - Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome or St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour, Rs 299 for 15ml - since light tea registers dissipate before reaching the far end. A Megh at Rs 3,499 or two Sukoons at Rs 1,799. Keep units away from the dining zone and AC outlets.
The pick: the Day & Night reed duo (₹1,498) as the whole-home start, or single signatures from ₹749.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A home that smells like itself - at a glanceStep 1 - honest air first: ventilation and source care in every roomStep 2 - one signature family, room by room (reeds from ₹749)Step 3 - occasions layered by mist diffuser (scent from ₹299)Large open homes - the Vaayu machine, on a schedule (luxury)All alcohol-free · made in India
A home's fragrance is a system, not a product: honest air beneath, one scent family expressed room by room, occasions layered on top, and consistency held for years. That is what guests experience as "your home always smells incredible" - and what the household experiences as home.
Straight answer
What is the right setup for a large open-plan living room?
Cover it properly rather than pushing harder from one point. 1. Two units, not one. Two Sukoons (₹1,799 each) at opposite ends of the floor, both running gently, produce an even register across the whole space. One machine in the middle running hard produces a strong zone and two weak ones, no matter how good it is. A Megh (₹3,499) is the single-unit answer where two are impractical. 2. Choose a base-heavy register. Light tea registers thin out before they reach the far end of a large volume. The Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome (citrus, floral, sandalwood) or the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods) from the collection, ₹299 for 15ml, both hold a big space better. 3. Zone the placement. Away from the dining table, so nothing competes with food, and away from air-conditioning outlets, which take output and throw it unevenly. Low, to one side, out of the eyeline. 4. Same scent in both units. Two registers on one open floor blend into a third that nobody chose. 5. Run gently and continuously. Four or five drops per tank in each, on cycles, rather than six in one machine running all day. SOSA's own interpretations; not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: two Sukoons at opposite ends run gently, same scent in both, base-heavy register, away from the dining zone and the AC. Or one Megh at Rs 3,499.
The whole-home start most households choose: the Day & Night duo - Morning Freshness for the day's bright spaces and Evening Calm for the bedroom - at ₹1,498, flame-free and plug-free. Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for hosting hours.

Two modest units beat one large one

Coverage, not force.

Why this works
How to cover an open floor
1 Two units at opposite ends, both run gently, beat one run hard 2 A base-heavy register holds a large volume better than a light one 3 Place away from the dining zone and away from AC outlets 4 Megh Rs 3,499 or two Sukoons at Rs 1,799 each. Scents from Rs 299
Start where most households start: the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 - or a single signature reed from ₹749.
1
One source makes a gradient
Two sources make a room
A single diffuser produces a concentration that falls off with distance, which in a small room is imperceptible and in a large one is the whole experience: strong near the machine, faint at the far wall. Pushing the single unit harder steepens the gradient rather than flattening it, so the near end becomes unpleasant before the far end becomes adequate. Two modest sources at opposite ends, each running at a low level, overlap in the middle and produce something close to uniform. It is the same principle that makes two lamps better than one bright bulb, and it applies just as directly.
Tip: pushing one unit harder steepens the gradient. It does not flatten it.
2
Big volumes need a base
Light registers do not arrive
In a small room almost any register works, because the distance is short and the volume is small. A large open floor is a genuine test: light, volatile materials disperse and dilute before they reach the far side, so a delicate white tea that is beautiful in a bedroom can read as nothing at all across thirty feet. Compositions with sandalwood or amber underneath survive the journey, because the heavy part of the composition persists in the air long enough to accumulate into a perceptible level. This is one of the few situations where the choice of scent genuinely does depend on room size rather than only on taste.
3
An open floor has jobs in it
Cooking, dining, sitting, arriving
The other thing that distinguishes open-plan is that several activities share one air volume, and fragrance has to be planned around them rather than dropped into the middle. The kitchen end should never be scented at all, since cooking smell is an extraction and cleaning matter. The dining zone should have nothing running while food is served. The seating area is where the register belongs, and the entrance is where the arrival impression is made. Placing units with those four zones in mind, rather than placing them where a socket happens to be, is what makes an open floor read as designed instead of as sprayed.
Tip: place the units around the four jobs on the floor, not around where the sockets are.
The SOSA principle
Two lamps beat one bright bulb. Two modest diffusers beat one large one, for exactly the same reason.
Pushing a single unit harder steepens the gradient rather than flattening it.

A note from Sonal

Nobody actually buys a diffuser. In ten years of making fragrance I have never once met a customer who wanted a bottle with sticks in it. What they want is the moment someone walks into their home, pauses, and says "wow - it smells incredible in here." They want their children to grow up with a smell that will mean home for the rest of their lives. They want the house to feel finished.

That is why I compose scents the way I do - not as products but as the missing layer of a home: the fresh note at the door that says this house is kept, the warm one in the living room that says you are welcome, the lavender in the bedroom that says the day is over. One family of scents, held for years, becomes something no decor budget can buy: identity.

Everything here is alcohol-free, flame-free where it matters, and made in small batches in India. And a part of every order supports girl-child education - because a home's best fragrance is what it gives back.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the home-care and buying advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centres (amygdala, hippocampus) ahead of conscious processing, which is why scents trigger emotional responses and autobiographical memories with unusual speed and durability; a home's ambient scent influences mood, comfort and social judgments at moderate, replicated effect sizes, with gentle intensities outperforming strong ones and no fragrance effect surviving unmanaged odour sources. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural rattan reeds (no flame, electricity or water), from ₹749, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks per fill; refills from ₹2,399. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799), Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a separate water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, ~1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India.
