Founder Diaries · Dhanteras & Festive Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
You have already decided on fragrance, which was the hard part. What is stalling you is a smaller question nobody answers properly: attar or perfume? These are not two price points of the same product. They are two different liquids, applied in two different ways, in two very different quantities - and the answer depends far less on your budget than on how your partner actually puts scent on in the morning.
SOSA Ameeri attar, Taif rose and sandalwood, from Rs 385
SOSA Ameeri · Taif rose, Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron from ₹385 →
The attar side of this comparison, in one bottle. SOSA Ameeri, ₹385 for 3ml - Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron, alcohol-free and dabbed onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. It leads this page because the attar is the answer for most partners, and because 3ml is the size that makes a wrong guess survivable.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the difference between an attar and a perfume? An attar is an alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled or dabbed onto the pulse points - a SOSA attar is ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml. A SOSA perfume is also alcohol-free but it is sprayed, and it comes in 10ml at ₹599 and 50ml at ₹1,799 or ₹1,899.

Which is the better Dhanteras gift for a partner? An attar if your partner dabs scent close to the skin, keeps a small bottle in a bag, or already wears oils. A perfume if they spray at the door on the way out and would rather reach for a bottle than a roll-on. Watch them for one morning and you will know.

Is a 3ml attar really enough to be a gift? Yes, because an attar is used a dab at a time rather than two sprays at a time. 3ml at ₹379 is a small bottle of concentrated oil, not a sample of a diluted one. If you want the gift to sit better in the hand, 6ml at ₹669 is the natural step up, and 12ml at ₹1,149 is for a scent they already wear.
The short answer
Short answer: Buy an attar if your partner dabs scent onto the wrist and keeps it close to the skin: SOSA attars are Rs 379 for 3ml, Rs 669 for 6ml and Rs 1,149 for 12ml. Buy a perfume if they spray on the way out of the door: 10ml is Rs 599 and 50ml is Rs 1,799 or Rs 1,899.
The pick: A SOSA attar from ₹379 for 3ml, unless your partner is visibly a sprayer - in which case a 10ml perfume at ₹599.
Why: An attar is alcohol-free, lives in a handbag and is used a dab at a time, so a small bottle goes a long way and a wrong guess costs you ₹379 rather than ₹1,899.
Choosing a Dhanteras fragrance gift - at a glanceWorn on a person - attar from ₹379, perfume from ₹599Lives in a home - reed diffuser from ₹749, duo set from ₹1,498Lives in a car - hanging or spray from ₹449, Safar ₹3,999A whole large home or a business - SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
The one question that settles most Dhanteras fragrance gifts: where will it live? A scent worn on a person is a taste decision and needs you to know them. A scent that lives in a room or a car is a placement decision and needs you to know their space - which is usually the easier thing to be sure of.
Straight answer
Should I gift my partner an attar or a perfume this Dhanteras?
Decide it on behaviour, not on price. An attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil applied to the pulse points - the inside of the wrist, behind the ear, the base of the throat - and it is used in dabs, which is why 3ml is a real bottle and not a sample. SOSA has four: Adaa at ₹379, Ameeri at ₹385, Mastani at ₹389 and Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml, rising to ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 at 12ml. A perfume is sprayed, so it goes on faster and over more skin, and the SOSA perfumes are alcohol-free too: 10ml at ₹599, 50ml at ₹1,799 or ₹1,899, 100ml at ₹3,499 or ₹3,599. The useful rule is this: a person who dabs will use an attar and quietly ignore a spray bottle, and a person who sprays will find a roll-on fiddly on a working morning. Both formats are a taste decision, so if you cannot name a single scent your partner already wears, buy the small size in either format rather than spending more to feel safer - and if you want three characters instead of one guess, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Watch one morning. If they dab, buy an attar. If they spray, buy a perfume. Everything else on this page is detail on top of that one observation.
Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron - ₹385 for 3ml, the warmest of the four attars and the easiest one to give at a festival.
SOSA Ameeri attar ₹385

The three things that decide attar or perfume - and price is not one of them

Attar and perfume are usually compared on price, which tells you nothing, or on longevity, which nobody can honestly quantify for you. These three questions are about how the bottle will actually be used by the person receiving it, and they settle the matter in about a minute.

1
The first variable
Do they dab, or do they spray?
This is the whole decision compressed into one habit. An attar is a roll-on oil, so it is placed deliberately: wrist, throat, behind the ear, one dab each. That suits somebody who applies scent sitting at a dressing table, or who tops up from a bag in the afternoon, or who likes a scent that stays near them rather than announcing them across a room.

A spray is a different motion - two pushes, arms, collar, done, usually in the last thirty seconds before leaving. If that is your partner, a roll-on will feel slow on a Monday morning and it will migrate to the back of a drawer. Buy the ₹599 10ml perfume instead and you have matched the gift to the routine rather than to the occasion.
Tip: If you have never seen them sit down to apply scent, buy the spray.
2
The second variable
How much liquid is actually a gift?
Size reads completely differently across the two formats and this is where most people over-spend. An attar is dosed in dabs, so 3ml at ₹379 is a small bottle of concentrated oil that will be in use for months, not a trial vial. 6ml at ₹669 is the size that sits properly in the hand if the attar is the whole gift. 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is for a scent you already know they wear, because it is a commitment to one character.

A perfume is sprayed, so it goes down faster. 10ml at ₹599 is the honest gift size when you are not certain of their taste - it is enough to live with a scent properly and small enough that a miss is not painful. 50ml at ₹1,799 or ₹1,899 and 100ml at ₹3,499 or ₹3,599 are replacement sizes for something they have already chosen for themselves.
3
The third variable
How certain are you about their taste?
Be honest here, because it is the only variable that can waste the money. If you can complete the sentence she has worn the same rose thing for three years, or he only likes the smoky ones, then you are choosing a scent, and either format works at any size. If you cannot complete that sentence, you are guessing, and no amount of extra spend improves a guess.

When you are guessing, do two things. Buy the small size - a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 10ml perfume at ₹599 - and buy the character that is easiest to live with rather than the most dramatic. Or take the guess away entirely with the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, which is three different characters in one box and lets your partner pick the one that suits them. Do not buy a 50ml bottle for a taste you are unsure of. That is the single most common way to spend ₹1,899 on something that is used twice.
Tip: Unsure of their taste? Small size, or three small ones. Never one large one.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to settle attar or perfume in four steps
  1. Watch one morning: a dab on the wrist, or two sprays at the door?
  2. Dabbers get an attar from Rs 379. Sprayers get a 10ml perfume at Rs 599.
  3. If you are guessing at their taste, buy 3ml or 10ml, never 50ml.
  4. Buy 12ml or 50ml only for a scent they already own and finish.
The SOSA principle
Millilitres are not comparable across the two formats. 3ml of attar is months of dabs and reads as a proper bottle; 10ml of sprayed perfume is the amount you buy while you are still deciding whether a scent suits you at all.
Which is why a ₹379 attar can be a complete gift and a ₹1,899 perfume chosen on a guess can be a waste of ₹1,899.

Which SOSA scent, and in which size

SOSA makes four attars and they are genuinely four different characters rather than four shades of one idea. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk - the daytime one, and the easiest to wear to an office. Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron, warm and festive. Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, the most formal of the four. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose and oudh, which is the evening one. On the perfume side, alcohol-free and sprayed, there are Bahaar, Chashni, Khayaal, Tabac Noir and Zaffran, all ₹599 for 10ml. These are SOSA's own compositions, composed in house - they are described as inspired by well known fragrances, but they are not those fragrances and SOSA is not affiliated with any of those houses.

The SOSA scent edit
Attar and perfume, compared on the things that matter
Scent Why it suits the mood
How it goes on · dabbed vs sprayed An attar is a roll-on oil placed on the pulse points, one dab at a time, deliberately. A perfume is sprayed, so it covers more skin in less time and suits a person who scents themselves on the way out of the door. Neither is better. They fit different mornings, and the morning is what you are buying for.
What the money buys · ₹379 vs ₹599 ₹379 buys 3ml of concentrated alcohol-free attar oil, used in dabs. ₹599 buys 10ml of alcohol-free perfume, used in sprays. The attar is the smaller bottle and the longer-lasting gift in practice, simply because of how little leaves the bottle each time it is used.
The size to buy as a gift · 3ml, 6ml, 10ml Guessing at their taste: 3ml attar at ₹379 or 10ml perfume at ₹599. Fairly sure: 6ml attar at ₹669 to ₹699. Certain, and replacing something they already finish: 12ml attar at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, or 50ml perfume at ₹1,799 to ₹1,899.
Who it suits · the honest version Attar suits the partner who wears scent close to the skin, travels with a small bottle and does not want to announce themselves. Perfume suits the partner who wants the scent to travel with them across a room and who already owns spray bottles. If you genuinely cannot tell, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 hands the choice back to them.

See the reed duo sets →

One practical note on sizes that nobody mentions at the counter. A 3ml attar is about the size of a lipstick, which is why it ends up living in a handbag and being worn on ordinary Tuesdays rather than saved for occasions - that is a feature, not a compromise. A 10ml perfume is the equivalent gesture on the spray side: enough to properly live with a scent, small enough that neither of you is stuck with it. If you want the gift to have more physical presence, two 3ml attars will always look more considered in the hand than one 10ml bottle, and the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is exactly that idea, with the guess removed.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.

SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The SOSA gifting range

There are only three questions worth asking before you spend anything. Will the gift be worn on a person, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to know what they already wear? Will it live in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser or a duo set is the safer buy? Or will it live in a car, where the choice is really between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray, and where SOSA Safar is the upgrade for somebody who genuinely spends hours driving? Answer that, then pick the price band.

The SOSA Dhanteras gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Every year around Dhanteras I get the same message, phrased twenty different ways: I have to buy something, I do not want to buy gold again, and I do not want to hand over a box of dry fruit that everybody quietly passes on. That is a real problem and it is worth taking seriously, because the difficulty is not the budget. It is that most festive gifts are bought for the moment of handing over and then have nowhere to go.

Fragrance is unusually good at this for one unglamorous reason: it gets used up. A reed diffuser sits on a console and does something for six to ten weeks. An attar lives in a handbag and gets worn on ordinary Tuesdays. A car perfume is noticed every single morning by somebody who did not ask for it. None of that is sentiment - it is just a product that has a job, unlike an object that has to earn shelf space for a decade.

Two honest cautions, though, because I would rather you bought well than bought more. A worn fragrance is a taste decision - if you do not know what the person already wears, a perfume is a guess, and a scent for their home or their car is the safer buy. And do not spend up a tier to look generous. A ₹379 attar chosen because it suits somebody is a better gift than a ₹3,999 machine bought for a person whose car is spotless and who never noticed a smell in it. Buy the thing that fits the life, not the thing that fits the occasion.

Frequently asked questions

Is an attar better than a perfume?
Neither is better. An attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil dabbed onto the pulse points and sold in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml from Rs 379. A SOSA perfume is also alcohol-free but sprayed, and sold in 10ml at Rs 599, 50ml at Rs 1,799 or Rs 1,899 and 100ml at Rs 3,499 or Rs 3,599. The right one is the one that matches how your partner already applies scent.
How much does a SOSA attar cost?
Adaa is Rs 379 for 3ml, Rs 669 for 6ml and Rs 1,149 for 12ml. Ameeri is Rs 385, Rs 679 and Rs 1,165. Mastani is Rs 389, Rs 685 and Rs 1,179. Nawaab is Rs 399, Rs 699 and Rs 1,199. The Attar Trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani is Rs 1,055 in 3ml sizes.
Are SOSA perfumes the same as the designer fragrances they mention?
No. The SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of those houses.
What if I have no idea which scent my partner would pick?
Buy small or buy three. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 or a 10ml perfume at Rs 599 keeps the cost of a wrong guess low. The Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 gives three different characters in one box, which moves the choice to the person who has to wear it.
Can someone at SOSA just tell me which one to buy?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and describe how your partner applies scent, anything you know they already wear and what you want to spend. You will get one recommendation rather than a catalogue, including the times the smaller bottle is the better answer.
