This is one of those questions where the honest answer is more useful than the reassuring one, because the reassuring answer would be that with enough adjustment the floors can be made to match, and they cannot. A multi-storey building is not one air volume. It is a stack of volumes joined by vertical paths you do not control, exposed to different amounts of sun, and used by different numbers of people at different times. Three mechanisms produce the variation, and it is worth being able to tell them apart, because two of them are normal and one of them occasionally is not. Mechanism one is the stack effect, which is the largest and the most consistent. Warm air rises, and a tall building offers it excellent routes: lift shafts, service lift shafts, stairwells and vertical service risers all run the full height and all move air continuously as cars travel, doors open and temperature differences drive convection. The consequence is that every floor receives a contribution from the floors below it, cumulatively, so the top of a building starts from a higher baseline than the bottom before you have installed anything at all. This is why a lift lobby on the ninth floor with an identical device on an identical setting reads stronger than the one on the second. It is also why a strong ground-floor lobby or an over-set restaurant announces itself on upper floors, and why a food note appearing on several floors at once at meal times is a ground-floor problem rather than a floor problem. The important operational consequence is this: if you find yourself wanting to raise the lower floors to match the upper ones, you have diagnosed the stack effect rather than a fault, and raising them is precisely the wrong response. Mechanism two is solar gain, and it is the one that makes a floor differ from itself across a day. An elevation that takes strong afternoon sun runs warmer, sometimes considerably, and warmth raises the release rate of every source in the space - a reed diffuser most obviously, since reed output rises with warmth and falls with cold, but also a machine's evaporation, the carpet, the curtains, the upholstery and any soft material holding months of absorption. Mechanism three is traffic, which is the least discussed and genuinely matters. Floors differ in occupancy, in the mix of room types, in how many doors open per hour, in when housekeeping works them, and in whether they carry a club lounge, a function room or a service area. Every door opening moves a parcel of room air into the corridor and a parcel of corridor air into the room, so a busy floor has far more mixing than a quiet one. A floor being turned over at two in the afternoon behaves nothing like the same floor at ten at night. Now, what to do. The wrong answer is to chase equality, and it is worth explaining why it is not merely futile but actively harmful. Chasing equality means adjusting floors until they match, and in practice adjustment is always upward, for two reasons: the human tendency is to fix the weak case rather than reduce the strong one, and everybody who works in a hotel adapts to a steady background within about an hour and stops perceiving it, with adaptation running only one way - so a level never seems to have grown, only to have gone. Over a year, a property that chases floor-to-floor equality will end up with a building set considerably higher than it started, with the top floors uncomfortable and nobody able to say when it happened. The right answer has three parts. First, set every equivalent zone identically and record it: floor, device, register, setting, date, and who set it. Identical settings are the baseline against which variation is meaningful; different settings make diagnosis impossible. Second, define a tolerance band, which is the useful discipline nobody applies. Decide what counts as normal variation - a noticeable difference between the second floor and the ninth, or between morning and afternoon on a sunny elevation - and what counts as out of range and worth investigating. Something is out of range when a guest would describe it, when one floor is legible while another is not, or when the difference is a change in character rather than in level. Third, audit a column rather than a floor. Ride to the top and walk down, stopping at each lift lobby, at four in the afternoon, with somebody who has come in from the street. A column walk shows you the gradient in twenty minutes and immediately distinguishes a stack effect, which is smooth and cumulative, from a fault, which is abrupt and local. There is a fourth mechanism that is a genuine fault rather than physics, and a column walk finds it: a device that has been adjusted by somebody, a bottle that is far older or fresher than its neighbours, or a machine that has been topped up rather than emptied and rinsed.
