Perfume the air the sofa sits in — never the cloth itself. A sofa holds odours because upholstery is a sponge, and no fragrance can undo that from the outside. Clean the fabric at source, control the damp, then let a diffuser keep the whole seating area fresh.
Quick answer
Your sofa is a sponge. Fabric, foam and filling absorb food oils, sweat and moisture from daily use — the smell is trapped inside, not on the surface.
Clean it, don't spray it. Vacuum, wash covers, use bicarbonate of soda, air it. Never spray perfume into upholstery — it stains and only masks.
Then scent the air. A reed beside the sofa or a Vaayu for the whole room.
The short version
Short answer: upholstery absorbs and holds odours. Clean the fabric at source and control humidity first; then scent the air around it, never the sofa itself.

The sofa is the hardest-working thing in the living room and the most honest record of how we live. We eat on it, nap on it, sit down with damp hair after a shower, let the dog up when no one is looking. So of course it holds odour — and of course the first instinct is to spritz it with a fabric spray. As a perfumer, that is the one habit I most want to break, because it damages the sofa and does not even fix the smell.
1
Why it happens
Upholstery is a sponge, and humidity makes it worse
Fabric, foam and cushion filling have an enormous surface area, and it drinks up everything — food oils, sweat, the natural oils from skin and hair, and airborne cooking particles that settle and stay. In monsoon or coastal humidity, trapped moisture lets odour-causing microbes thrive and makes every smell cling longer. The odour lives inside the sofa, which is exactly why surface fragrance can't reach it.
The tell: if the smell returns the moment someone sits down and presses the cushions, it is trapped in the filling — a cleaning job, not a fragrance one.
2
The fix at source
Clean the fabric — never spray perfume into it
Vacuum the upholstery and the crevices weekly. Wash or dry-clean removable covers on a schedule. For stubborn odour, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the fabric, leave it an hour, then vacuum it off — it draws out trapped smell without moisture. Air the sofa near an open window or a fan, and for leather, wipe it down and let it dry fully. What you must not do is spray perfume or an alcohol-based room spray onto the cloth: it stains, can damage delicate fabrics over time, and only sits on top of the problem.
The rule: clean the sofa, scent the air. The cloth gets cleaned; the fragrance goes into the room around it.

Honest note: in humid weather, prefer a reed or the waterless Vaayu over an ultrasonic — you do not want to add moisture to a sofa that already traps damp.
"A sofa can't be perfumed clean. Clean the cloth, then scent the air it sits in — that is the whole secret."

Frequently asked
Why does my sofa hold onto smells?
Upholstery is a sponge. Fabric, foam and cushion filling have a huge surface area that absorbs oils, food particles, sweat and moisture from everyday use, and in humid weather that trapped moisture makes odours cling and linger. A sofa in daily use — snacks, damp hair, pets, long afternoons — collects and holds all of it, which is why it needs cleaning at the source, not just fragrance.
How do I get smells out of my sofa?
Clean it at the source. Vacuum the upholstery and crevices weekly, wash or dry-clean removable covers, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the fabric, leave it an hour and vacuum it off, and air the sofa near an open window or a fan. For leather, wipe it down and let it dry. Only once the fabric is genuinely clean should you add fragrance — and to the air, never to the sofa itself.
Can I spray perfume or room spray on my sofa to freshen it?
No — avoid it. Perfume and alcohol-based sprays can stain and mark upholstery, damage delicate fabrics over time, and only sit on top of the trapped odour rather than removing it. The right approach is to clean the fabric at source, then scent the air around the sofa with a diffuser. Perfume the air the sofa sits in, never the cloth itself.
What is the best way to keep a sofa smelling fresh?
Keep the fabric clean with regular vacuuming and washing, control humidity so odours cannot cling, and run a diffuser nearby so the whole seating area holds a clean scent. A
Morning Freshness or
Mountain Breeze reed on the side table works beautifully, and for a large living room a waterless
SOSA Vaayu keeps the entire space fresh so the sofa never becomes the smell of the room.
Does humidity make my sofa smell worse?
Yes. Moisture trapped in cushions and foam lets odour-causing microbes thrive and makes existing smells cling far longer, which is why sofas smell worst in monsoon and coastal humidity. Control the damp — air the room, use a fan or dehumidifier, dry the sofa out — and scent with a dry method like a reed or a waterless SOSA Vaayu rather than an ultrasonic mist that adds humidity.
Clean the cloth, scent the air
A fresh sofa comes from clean fabric and a steady scent.
Once the upholstery is genuinely clean, a reed on the side table keeps the seating area fresh with no mist near the fabric — and for a whole large room, a SOSA Vaayu holds one clean signature so the sofa never becomes the smell of the space.
