Why do essential oils clog diffusers?
Because oil and water do not mix. An ultrasonic diffuser works by vibrating a plate thousands of times a second to atomise water into a fine mist. Raw essential and carrier oils are thick and not water-soluble, so instead of dispersing through the water they float, cling and settle as a film on the plate. That film dampens the vibration - so the mist gets weak and eventually stops - and over time it gums up the works. It is not that the oils are bad; it is that they are the wrong physical form for a device built to atomise water.

Why oil and an ultrasonic plate don't mix
This is worth understanding once, because it explains every clogging story I hear. It comes down to two facts: how the diffuser works, and how oil behaves in water.
How an ultrasonic diffuser works
A small metal plate vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency - millions of times a minute - fast enough to shatter the surface of the water above it into a fine, cool mist. The fragrance you add has to be able to disperse into that water so it rides the mist out into the room.
Oils are not water-soluble. Essential oils and carrier oils do not dissolve in water. They float on top or break into droplets that cling together. So they never truly join the water the plate is trying to atomise.
They settle on the plate as a film. Because they cling rather than disperse, oils coat the vibrating plate. A thin oily film there is enough to damp the vibration, so the mist weakens.
The film builds and gums up. Over days and weeks that film thickens, traps residue and hardens. Now the plate is properly clogged, the mist stutters or stops, and you may get that rancid, oily smell as the oils oxidise.
Carrier oils are the worst offenders. Thick base oils - the kind sometimes mixed with fragrance - are heavy and greasy and coat everything. They are the fastest route to a clogged unit.
Myth: a few drops of essential oil is fine in any diffuser. Some cheap diffusers tolerate it briefly, but in any ultrasonic unit raw oils shorten its life. The safe rule is simple: use a fragrance made to disperse in water.
What to use, and how to recover a clogged unit
The answer is a fragrance designed for the job, plus a simple recovery routine if you have already clogged one.
Use SOSA water-based fragrance. It is formulated to disperse in the tank water and ride the cool mist evenly, without leaving a heavy oily film on the plate. A few drops per fill is all it takes, and it mists cleanly for the life of the unit.
To recover a clogged plate: empty the tank, add diluted white vinegar (about one part vinegar to two parts water), let it sit a few minutes to lift the oily film, then gently wipe the plate with a soft cloth or cotton bud and rinse well. Repeat if the film is stubborn.
Then switch fragrances for good. Once it is clean, refill with SOSA water-based fragrance and filtered water. The clogging simply does not recur, because there is no thick oil to settle.
